Title: Pickup Advice Please
Post by: tux320 on May 25, 2008, 10:41:12 PM
I need to replace the pickups in my vintage vs6 but i'm kind of spoilt for choice. I hope the following helps show what tone i'm after.

Positions: Bridge & Neck (could be two completely different pickups or a calibrated set)
Guitar: SG Copy (Mahogany)
Amp: JCM900 or Peavy Windsor
Music Styles/Influences/Sound: Slash (particularly in the case of the neck pickup), some pop-punk (don't laugh), on lower gain AC/DC, highest gain maybe getting into metal territory (?) Mostly a boosted mid sound. Needs clarity for fast playing.

Thanks for your help

I think you'd be happy with an AII Stormy Monday in the neck position and a Riff Raff in the bridge. Would handle everything exept the midboost, but I'd use a TS-style pedal for that if I was in your position. You could go higher in output for the bridge but it might not pair that well with the low-output neck pickup that is needed for a Slashy tone.

the a5 mule bridge has more mids than a riff raff. i think it could be the right option for you.

yes, I agree that is the nearest sounding combination I can think of. I only delayed in replying, as ( having recently had my AII Stormys made into AIV ones )  I realised that the change of magnet alone adds a lot of clarity.

In summary, I still  agree with what Ilyti said though, for having played a Riff Raff bridge I can assure you of power with an  open', snappy' aggresion AND  the ability to mellow a bit with the tone controls. The AII Stormy is of course pure 'Slash' tone.

I was thinking of suggesting that, but I was not sure of the above stated fact. Thanks.
