Title: sorry, another orange post
Post by: robharries13 on May 31, 2008, 10:10:38 PM
Hi everyone, got a bit of a dilemma, so here goes.
I plan to fork out for an orange amplifier sometime in august. i am a gigging musician, nothing huge, but i play to about 100-150 people each gig. at the moment, im playing through a cr@ppy vox ad50vt. To me, ive only got it for the built in effects to get me through the gig without any pedals shorting out etc.
Im looking at three choices:
i) Orange tiny terror
ii) orange rocker 30 head
iii) orange rocker 30 combo

now i tried the tiny terror out in my local music shop, and it blew me away. originally it was going to be my number 1 choice, then i was then told the one thing i dont ever want to hear: it might not be loud enough in a gig situation.
naturally then, i looked for the next thing within my price range: the rocker 30

basically, im just looking for some feedback of the above amps. most importantly, is the Tiny Terror loud enough through a standard orange cab (1x12), or do i need to go for a bit more power (2x12, 4x12) to get the volume.
also, would it just be cheaper to get the rocker combo?
any thoughts would be appreciated.  sounds, experiences etc.
p.s. im trying to keep my budget at around £700.

I would get the rocker 30 - it's a great amp plus it has useable cleans and enough headroom for gigging.

TinyTerror is a cool piece of gear and sounds real great, but not really versatile enough for a full blown gig in my opinion.

Plus the rocker 30 is a REAL NICE amp :O)

Loud enough - Yes.

Versatile enough? Perhaps not.

The TT can be bloody loud, but any gig of that size and you'll have the amps mic'd up anyway I'd imagine, so it shouldn't matter.

I'd be surprised if the TT was loud enough, I have mine through an Orange 1x12 and while it is loud for home use, in a space big enough for 150 people I think it will get lost, a 4x12 will help, but even then. If you mic it up then of course it will be fine. The TT will also lose some of that volume if you try to clean it up.

I love my TT, but I wouldn't regard it as a gigging amp (I've never gigged, so this is opinion only!), it does what it does very well, I consider it a great practice or recording amp, but I think you might hit it's limits in a gig.

I've not played the rocker 30, but I have a rockerverb 50 and if the rocker 30 comes halfway between the 2 then it will be a great amp. I'd be looking long and hard at the R30.

Or you could throw caution to the wind and get the rockerverb 50 :) That sucker rules. (just my opinion)

I've gigged my tiny terror and 1x12, was plenty loud. Played a Barfly gig, used the TT clean with a crunchbox for dirt, was mic-ed though. Sounded great, volume was around 9 though on the 15W switch, gain at 4ish. I love mine, even rehearse with a loud  drummer in rehearsal rooms with this set up.

That said- I want a bigger orange at some point...

Slightly off-topic Rob, but what band do you play in? I'm a Swansea native as well.
