Title: Pickup recomendations...
Post by: Werewolf on September 08, 2005, 08:23:30 AM
I have an Ibanez SC420.  Mahogany body.  I hate the stock pickups...  My rig is a bad cat Hot Cat 30R (high gain Class A).  4x12 cab with Eminence speakers (2xblack powder, 2x wizard).  BBE Sonic maximizer, keeley ts808 for a solo boost...  Now...  I play lots of blues, hard rock and metal.  I want a pickup that will give me a bit of a high gain blues tone.  What do you recomend???

Yeah +1 with the Crawlers, or Abraxas

Could even be a Mule for a more vintage vibe - oops that's confused things :?

I would go with the Riff-Raff or Crawler.  The Crawler is more modern sounding, the Riff Raff more classic.

If you decide on the Abraxas, get the alnico V magnets.  This is the set I am putting into my PRS Standard.  Tim told me this was more suited to the mahogany body.

Everything I've heard with the Mules sounds fabulous, but Mules aren't particularly high gain, are they?  That's why my gut feeling led me to recommend the Crawlers (which, on paper at least, look to be markedly hotter than the Mules, yet voiced for a heavy blues-rock vibe).

Depends on lots of factors like the amp etc

Crawlers are the gainier of the two, but they're also more dynamic because they don't compress as much, which is great for blues. If you want a pickup to help you out a bit, then the gainier ones are better, but for maximum feel and control the Mules and lower gain pickups pay you back for your extra effort with great tone. If you want more midrange push to drive the amp stick with the crawlers.

Or do what PhilKing recommended and go for the middle ground with a RiffRaff.

LOL; yes, it was a n00b who thought the name Miracle Man implied that it was bluesy sounding ... not much of an Ozzy fan, I take it.

What exactly are the emeralds and the cold sweats designed for?  I have heard some good stuff about both of those.

Emerald = late 70s Marshall Powered Les Paul rock tone - think Thin Lizzy

Cold Sweat = big 80s hard rock type tone

OK...  Thanks for the help...

I'm just looking for something with a ton of articulation and is very sensitive to attack and nuance.  Really tight but not compressed.

The Crawlers aren't overly compressed at all, no BKP is compared to mass produced machine wound pickups that sound compressed at any output. The more I think about it I recon the Crawlers are right for you.  8)

Craw;ers are great for what you want. They will go well with a mahogany (super)strat and the Bad Cat amp.

I've done some fine tuning on my Crawlers since the clips. I've lowered them just a little bit and lowered the coil screws on the E and A string a notch. It now has a little less pronounced mid on these strings and really tightend the bass up. Not as tight as a Miracle Man but damn close when pushed hard enough.

Do you guys think I could get that prog/metal sound out of the crawlers?  I want the high gain to be between dream theater and children of Bodom.

Would a heavy front end on the amp help with this?  Or would a massive preamp be damaging to the amp?

first up, huge preamp gain won't damage the amp as such, you'll burn through valves/tubes marginally quicker that's all.
COB tone..............yes, the Crawlers will do that especially hooked up with a hi gain amp, no problemo PDT_045 and you'll still have great cleans and also good splits too. 8)
