Title: Les Paul pictures
Post by: Stevepage on June 01, 2008, 09:29:45 PM
Hey guys. I'm getting myself a Les Paul in the near future (possibly an old Greco or a Gibson) so I'd love to see pictures of the one you all have.

I played an old 70's Les Paul Custom today in Denmark Street and it was amazing. I've never felt another guitar like it, it's how Les Pauls should be.

So go ahead, post yours

Hi!

I´m new to this forum. Just ordered a new set of Nailbombs today, for this beaty:

It´s a 2006 Gibson LP, vintage sunburst.

The Pearl needs a fret dress I think and a proper setup so hopefully over summer I'll take it to Wez or Feline for that. Got a RY bridge and I've just got a MQ neck for it so that should be on its way soon. If I like the MQ neck enough I'll probably replace the RY with a bridge model.. Epiphone has Mules and its still my favourite guitar.

what's the Pearl like compared to the Epiphone Tom? I've never come across one before.

Sounds duller/less clear when played acoustically and has a much thicker/rounder neck than the Epiphone.. plugged in its pretty good, but I had to disconnect the tone pot on the rebel yell because it was a bit muddy.

here's my 1990 LP std with Mules, had this guitar since my 19th birthday.  it's not an easy or smooth guitar to play, it's a rough ride and a bit of a fight, but it sounds so raw and I love it.

Thanks, ilyti  :) .  I don't have any daylight pics of it, but I could try to do some at the weekend maybe.  It's very hard to get the purple colour to come out the way it really looks.

Here is an old Lion model that I made 6 years ago and was reviewed in Guitar Buyer Magazine.

Well I just got her back this weekend!
Remember it was made before BKP existed - hence the Duncan pickups
I will be updating her in the coming weeks with BKPs, the more refined logos we use now and an Earvana nut too.

These are some shots of mine, the top picture shows my standard with Riff Raff/Stormy Monday (on it's side), 53 conversion with Black Dogs and 86 Darkback Goldtop with PG Blues.

In the other shot you can see my 54 goldtop, sadly I sold the 55 custom reissue, 1960 LP Special, Junior with Pig 90, 71 54 reissue, and 59 junior as well as the other 3.

thanks for compliments!!this was an ebay special....I think I paid around 1400 USD...don't remember exact price, but that is close
-it is "wine red", but most people think it was aspecial custom shop job-it has a reddish tint...sometimes purple-I am very happy with the top AND tone
-the burstbuckers that were in it could NOT even compare with the Rebs-I put the bbuckers on ebay and got 165 USD!!...that was later spent on MORE BKP!!!

Well - I have gone with Riff Raffs so far and they sound wonderful.
The Riff Raff was based on the earliest Gibson "Patent Number" pickup that came out in about 1960-61.
Apparently Gibson had just brought a new winding machine online at the time and it had an automatic shutoff which eliminated the "overwind" that had been prevalent on some pickups over the previous couple of years (this overwind is what the Mule is based on to some extent)

Now for me  the sound is excellant
It seems to be exactly right for Randy Rhoads LP sound and also Dave Meniketti (Y&T) who is one of my big faves.

The extra tightness that the Alnico 5 gives it and the more open middle (from the wind)mean you seem to have more clarity in the midrange - superb for rock rhythm. Does AC/DC really well - even in a Les Paul type guitar.

One sound that works really well is having both pickups on together.
This didn't used to be my favourite but with the Riff Raffs it sounds so right in the same way that a great sounding tele sounds good with both pickups on. I had seen Dave Meniketti from Y&T do this a lot live and his guitar never seemed to sound too bloated whilst it previously didn't work so well for me.

Really liking this set-up so far
Maybe I need another LP with Mules in as well!

Still intend to put an Earvana on it and I may elect to go Tonepros on the hardware too - just to add to the tone . I'm considering an aluminium tailpiece too which has worked wonders on so many axes before.

Here she is with the BKPs in - looking good!

Ha ha
Only just got it back this weekend
Will be doing the upgrades quickly in my own time though....

As I am a businessman at heart I will put it up for sale at about the same price that I sell my Lion custom builds (and it doesn't sell quickly I get to play it for longer - yay!)
I love the guitar, but I am not foolish enough to turn away anyone willing to pay the asking price. (about £1950 once all the upgrades are in place)

I am also making another one with a not dissimilar spec - although the body is a bit thicker, but I think it would look fab in the same colour scheme

Oh, that does look great!  Very much more interesting than regular ebony.  I've got an old parts Strat with an ebony board, which I think may be Macassar.

But...I...do...not...have...GAS...anymore.

I don't.

gaboon ebony can still be streaky - if its mostly black with grey streaks its  probably the usual stuff, if the streaks are brown to bright orange its more likely to be macassar.  the high contrast stuff tends to be a popular veneer for board room tables and contemporary furniture

Here is an old Lion model that I made 6 years ago and was reviewed in Guitar Buyer Magazine.

Well I just got her back this weekend!
Remember it was made before BKP existed - hence the Duncan pickups
I will be updating her in the coming weeks with BKPs, the more refined logos we use now and an Earvana nut too.

was lucky enough to play this guitar today... its everything a les paul should be, smart looking, rich sounding, easy to play. if i'd be a paul fan it'd be mine now!

It's my Prototype Burns Brian May. It is #2 that was one of the R&D models that Brian ran through its paces. I got it signed a couple of years later.

No, I'm Joe Perry and that's Billie.

I've lurked here for a while on the board. The one on the right above is a Historic Boneyard. I scored that about 5 years ago:

I am sure I have seen that pic before, are you on the LP Forum? I occasionally browse over there.

Yep.

My orange sparkle LP came with Classic 57s and I tried VHII and Rebel Yells in them last night.  That's for another topic and time .

why's nobody mentioned the Goldtop? I would KILL just to have a strum on that Goldtop. Possibly the most beautiful guitar on the planet
