Title: random request - german language courses
Post by: gwEm on June 04, 2008, 05:50:30 PM
i've occasionally posted random requests for advice, sometimes people come up trumps, and sometime not...

anyway, (as always) seeking a bit of adventure I'd like to improve my German language. can anyone recommend an evening class? theres loads around on the internet - hard to know which is good.

i just did an online test and reached 'intermediate' which is quite shocking as I didn't feel I was that good.

Just speak to them in Genglish just like in 'Allo, 'Allo. They'll understand you quite well.

Last time I did any evening language classes was a long time ago - I did a Chamber of Commerce Italian one (which was good) and I did a local evening class which was rubbish - I think that you need to just see what is available in your area and try it!

Mike

PS - shame it wasn't Spanish or I would have posted the Julio Geordio links....

I was at the International House School in London doing Italian, they are by Marble Arch.  I liked their classes, this is the link:

(OK Remak,  cut the obvious /sleep with a dictionary/ stuff and try to be serious..., you know a woman+google = Sherlock Holmes*10)

I don't have personal experience of their courses, but doesn't the Goethe Institute in London offer intermediate classes?

Maybe you already know the Deutche Welle slowly spoken German language news podcasts

http://www.dw-world.de/dw/0,1595,8030,00.html

There is also an Austrian teacher based in Canada who used to produce an excellent pod cast dealing with grammatical themes. I can't find the link in Google but it must be out there. Very good quality stuff. PM me if you are interested and I'll try harder.

Alternatively take a Ryan Air 15 quid long weekend special to Hahn and head for the cheep hotels in the Rheingau. A few glasses of Riesling and a few friendly chats will do you more good than a month of evening classes.

Found him. Very helpful for an intermediate/advanced level, charmingly presented too, I wish I'd had a teacher like that.

And finally .... if you are learning German, do hurry up, as the language is being phased out.

The replacement is a novel dialect of English with a few German loan words. Here, for example, is a how a on-line music retailer tells customers about the "Foo"(name changed to protected the innocent) brand of pups ...

So Hunter, did you move the Brussels so you could drink some decent beer at last?

Hunter - few questions to test how long you have been out of Germany.

When you moved to Brussels did you have to leave your sense of humour at the border? It is compulsory under EU law! (Ever met a funny Belgian? Actually. most of the funny French comedians are/were really Belgian, but the French don't like to admit this. )

Did you know that Belgium is essentially Switzerland without the mountains?

Now then, is there anyone left in Europe to have a go at??

:-)

These are really good:

I have the German and Chinese one's, really easy to learn from. It seems like basic stuff at first but I find them quite effective.
