Title: rebel yell in Flying V90 - top of the bill
Post by: gwEm on June 04, 2008, 08:08:04 PM
not the best timing, and i couldn't really crank it (master = 1.5) so it sounds a touch fizzy.

nevertheless, its pretty close to what it sounds like.

G12H100/Marshall 2204 SM57 close miced into Zoom MRS8, delay added on PC - no other effects

Sounds like some mids and bass are lacking.
Nice playing though.

I think it sounds great, typical 80s crunch, and I'm sure it would be perfect in a mix.

Alternatively, a tad more distance and a tad more away from the center of the speaker would give a warmer, fuller sound, but you'd need a backing track to tell really.

many people say the same about the tone i like - not enough bass. i like it that way (very bass starved) i must say, for the reasons hunter says - sounds better in the mix. you can take the bass out afterwards, but you can only do it so much post-prod, before it starts to sound a bit fake.

but i think though johnny is right about the mids. in fact this is why i changed to a holy diver in that guitar - to get some more lower mids. the rebel yell was a bit bright even for me in the V90. though you could get the early schenker tone very well.

hunter also raises some points about the mic position. in the case of this clip, its mounted a couple of centimeters off center - and pointing 90 degrees to the grill cloth. the mic sits directly on the grill. this was the 'old' gwem way. at the time i felt it gave a good approximation to the room sound.

but i saw posts on this forum by hamfist, who suggested 45 degree or so grill cloth angle. i used this in my slowhand clip, and i liked the results when exactly center micing - it seemed more accurate to me. if someone is adventureous, i wouldn't mind some comments on that ;) ;)

I bet it would sound cool in a mix cutting through. Do you record any of your gigs or with other sounds involved?

yes i do, but i'm not sure its appropriate to upload such things here - since theres always been a backlash against techno, electronica, and urban music. i've some NWOBH style miracle man studio recordings in this setting. if theres some interest, i might post a link.

Well I've been listening to Ozric Tentacles tonight, does that count?  :D
Jeff beck manages to mix guitar and electronic sounds well too.

I like the tone a LOT! Sounds a lot like mine actually.

As for the backlash - there will be no such thing from me! I've just been raving to 'Disco Snax'!
