Title: Cheesey Solo - Nailbomb
Post by: lepersmeesa on September 09, 2005, 01:58:05 PM
Hey, i just recorded a solo for a competition on the petrucci forum. Im entering in the intermediate section. Not my choice of backing track, but see what you guys think any how.

Setup again Pod Xt pro, mbox, no effects on the guitar sound straight from the pod. Playing through an Ibanez RGT2020 and nailbombs.

Enjoy

Dez

Well that kicked my ass, how did you get that fast?
TBH I'd rather listen to your playing than Petrucci, that was some insane shredding with melody.

Great tone and playing!
A solo that can stay interesting for 2 minutes is a very good thing!!

The doubled parts are a little loosey-goosey, tho.

Thanks for all the comments guys. It is much appreciated.

TO - I would of given it more of a go, but i was writing and recording at the same time and alot of the time i couldnt remember what i just played so if i did want to harmonise i wouldnt have exaclty the same phrasing or timing...... Havent been playing to my best lately, but still no excuses. I also found it extremely hard to solo for 2 minutes, let alone over a backing track i HATE!!

If anyone wants to have a go on it , just PM me and ill send it over.

Dez

Brilliant..............works for me :D Lovely tone, great phrasing and superb chops.I'd hardly call it intermediate, there's lots of pro players that can't rip like that!

Woah, man. In awe!

I can't put my finger on what song that backing riff is. If it isn't a song - it sounds damn close to one!

Shredding that fast at 18. How do you build up your speed?

I'm stuck on the same speed I've been at for a while.

the riff in it is from Electric Eye by Judas Priest i think (well that song has a very similar sounding riff).

Cool backing track, i think we should get TO\HJM\Tim + Steve to have a go (+ anyone else who wants a go!)

Just practicing to a metronome and setting myself goals which are higher then my playing ablity. I fond that i would constantly be playing songs which were around the same difficulty level. I eventually started pushing myself and learning songs which would take over a week to learn. Start off slow and build yourself up.

I would practice scale fragments to a metronome and play them at around 60bpm at 16ths and when you feel comfortable at that speed bring it up 2-3bpm and carry on doing so. Dont move on if dont feel comfortable. Also analyse the way you are picking and make sure you are hitting everything cleanly.

There are people on this forum far better then me, so if people want to give some better advice go for it.

I was also thinking maybe we should have a solo competition on this forum, a monthly one with a winner for tone and a winner for playing.

Just downloaded the backing track and burned it to CD. It does have a little bit of that Eletric Eye vibe going on ... definitely harmonic minor. I will start working on it today. :)

That's what shredder forums are for! This ain't a competition, and if it ever became one, I would stop posting clips.

Just an idea...calm down!

It occured to me that TO had enjoyed playing over the backing track, and that more people on the forum may of wanted to record more clips of their BKP tones.

My idea was just to have a monthly backing track for people to record, play and discuss on the forum. For me I find this a useful way to learn, as you can pick up ideas from other people as a means of developing your own technique and style.

I really didnt expect such an agressive response, and apologise for coming across as suggesting something so heinous.

That sounds OK to me. It wouldn't be competitive, more like a platform to swap phrasing and tone ideas. We can all learn from each other. Good idea! :D

I'm not so sure it is good to compete as playing is so subjective anyway. I like the informal atmosphere here. Competition can be intimidating for some. Showing off your BKP's is what it is about to let others see what can be done by the ordinary mortals that we are- using gear that we can all pretty much get our hands on. It would really scare me off cos I am a bluesy kinda player. The most important thing to me is feel and that can be done with one note...thats my excuse anyway.

Post by: lepersmeesa on September 13, 2005, 01:14:55 AM
That would be the great thing. If people post backing tracks that other people feel uncomfortable playing over such as blues and jazz tracks it will help people learn different styles.
Title: Cheesey Solo - Nailbomb
Post by: 38thBeatle on September 13, 2005, 07:47:33 AM
I didn't mean that people should feel uncomfortable. Playing stuff that is out of your normal box is great as long as you enjoy doing it and therefore gain from it.What I meant was that this should be about feeling confident about posting without feeling that you have to out do someone else. We are all from different backgrounds and have different tastes and experience. The great thing at present is that we have common ground and, hopefully, a healthy respect for our fellow forum bros. Thats not to say we can't express an opinion it is just that we are demonstrating BKP's in different environments. If people have backing tracks for others to play over then that is great. I love the different posts from the different perspectives of different players. I don't always like them but I do like hearing what people get out of thier BKPs. I do waffle don't I?

I understand where your coming from. I suppose we should just leave it for now and see how it goes. So far though i have loved how this backing track has gone, everyones takes have been really interesting for me, and helped me look at the backing in a different way.

I hate to sound negative about your playing, but I did not really like the solo.

After reading the comments I expected something else.

Wonderful technique, but mostly not very musical. I guess it's just not to my taste. Some good effects ideas though.

I am not really impressed by fast playing.  I can play quite fast, but do not prefer to do so.

I will put one up soon, so....

For the style of music on the backing track his playing is spot on and fits the track perfectly.Surely you can appreciate that?

for everyones information shredding = malmsteen, rusty cooley, michael angelo, paul gilbert, herman li, luca turilli etc..

I thought the sound clip was about tone and a player having fun, obviously I was mistaken :(

But then I am a shitee guitarist and would use that excuse.

As for shredding I only ever got as far as Al DiMeola, Holdsworth & Van Halen (and a little bit of Vai & Gilbert) after that point it seemed to be come a technical exercise, intersting but ultimately pointless in itself.

I have taken a liking to Zak Wylde since regaining an interest in guitar playing, simply because it sounds good (and he actually seems to enjoy playing).

Let people have fun and also get an idea of the tones available from BKP gear please.

Well, I don't know. Personally, I'll check it out for sure, it's always a pleasure to hear good guitar playing. And I think its' fair to give everyone a chance - which I guess is why his first post pissed me off. I feel that this is a place where we can be positive and constructive about each others playing, and if I have nothing nice to say, then I just won't say it. I don't see the point to lambast someone and then present yourself as everything they should be.

One person's playing can never be more valid than anyone else's - sure you may like it more, or less - but at the end of the day I think everyone has the right to express themselves musically without getting a battering for it.

This forum is about pickups, not about how well you can play.. and what ever you say, that WAS played well... I don’t care who you are. Ego's like yours will not be tolerated on this forum.
If you had the intelligence to read any of the posts you would see that this is not his usual style.
What is it with people recently signing up just to post negative comments? Some people have way too much spare time.

I thought willo was right in his first post on the matter.

Personally I tried to be more gentle about telling him that he was talking through his ass, as I have been trying not to be too blunt (but I fail), these days.

Anyway I liked the playing and it ably demonstrated that Mules arn't just "classic rock" pickups whatever classic rock means anyway.

Sorry guys but you won't be hearing any clips from that big mouth as I've banned him from the forum.I won't tolerate ego in any shape or form. As far as I'm concerned he can spend the extra time practicing his playing and then one day he may well be able to walk what he talks but having met many such 'players' in my time, I very much doubt it.
My apologies if that ignorant big head upset anyone, I wasn't quick enough to prevent it being posted.

I thought that was a pretty cool clip. A good sense of melody in there. Even though you hate it, it fitted VERY well, you can fool anyone into thinking that you play that style all the time.
