Title: Changing tunings is bad?
Post by: Ben_W on June 07, 2008, 09:23:40 PM
Hi,

I was playing a gig, and as my band plays in drop D and Drop C, I usually change guitars, but at sound check, I only had the 1 guitar, so as I would normally, if for some reason I only had one guitar, I tuned from drop D into drop C, then a random person started like shouting at me, saying it'll bend my neck.

Is this true? I don't really mind, as I have a guitar for Drop C, just wanted to know.

Cheers,

Ben.

I think they were just trying to ruffle your feathers a bit or just plain wrong.  The only thing that would need to be changed is a small truss rod adjustmen and intonation.  As the string tension is lessened the neck bends slightly back and if you don't adjust the truss rod you might get slight fret buzz.

if you change a tuning you should check string height / neck relief / intonation, etc. as there is a different strings tension and you might need to set the guitar up again.
drop c and drop d is not that much difference, but if you tune a whole guitar lower than usual you should definitely check it.
