Steve Lukather has quit Toto. Gott a say I'm pretty gutted. Liked toto a lot & steve is a hell of a guitarist. No more holding the line
-
Does that mean the band has split? You can't really have Toto without Lukather can you?
-
Its a sad story, its worth just posting this, don't know the original source, but I have lifted it from a JakeELee.com poster
Guitarist Steve Lukather has announced the demise of Los Angeles AOR legends Toto.
In a statement posted on his personal website here, Lukather said: “The fact is, yes, I have left Toto. There is no more Toto. I told the guys before the last leg of our tour.
“We had some differences in how business was being done. The other fact is that I have been the only guy who was at the first rehearsal until the last gig a month or so ago.
“When Jeff [Porcaro, drums] died part of us all died with him. We pursued it and had some great times. Simon [Phillips] was a champ replacing Jeff at a most difficult time.
“Bobby [Kimball, vocals] was out of the band for 16 years and then came back and you know the other singer stories. Other than Bobby, Joe [Williams, vocals] was the only guy that really fit with us 'cause he was a high-school buddy as well. No offence to Bobby at all.
“When Dave Paich [keyboards] retired that was REAL hard for me 'cause we started the band together. Hell, it’s 35 years if you count high school where the core all met. When Mike [Porcaro, bass] fell ill and had to leave that was it for me. If there isn’t a Paich or at least one Porcaro, how can we even call it Toto?
"We had a great run and I owe an awful lot to the experience and the success we had. We hung in there hard despite being the most hated band in the world by most so-called 'rock critics'.
“Honestly, I have just had enough. This is NOT a break. It is over. I really can't go out and play Hold The Line with a straight face any more. I was 19 when we cut the record. I am 50 now."
-
Someone should tell him to hold the line....
-
I'm glad - even good things must come to end to be truly appreciated.
-
in my eyes, he did the decent thing .. some others would ride the wave of success to death and back, leeching off of the names of former members and their success as a group.
-
I first heard his playing on Michael Jacksons Thriller - check out the credits and you see some pretty amazing guitar players - many "top LA session guitarists".
Oh, and some bloke called Eddie...
Can't remember of Larry Carlton played on Thriller... I think that he played on "She's Out Of My Life" from Off The Wall, which was brilliant.
Mark.

I must admit I have the 7" single of Hold The Line from 1978...
How did I get so old? It just crept up on me...
-
lukather played the hold the line solo at 19?
:o
i wasn't sure i could rate him any more highly, i guess now i can.
anyway, toto were awesome, it's a shame they split. :(
-
It's a good thing they have slpit up, the original drummer was awesome. I love Toto IV, it's one of my favourites.

Steve Stevens on "Dirt Diana" by MJ 8)
I've never heard Toto... why do I feel like a heathen?

You're not missing anything. They're cheesy as $%
-
oh good :)
-
gtfo
-
I'm glad in a way. I can't stand Toto, but Steve is a great player. Maybe he'll have time to tour on his own now.
-
Lukather is a crackin player (love his stuff on Talk To Ya Later by The Tubes), but can't really stand Toto - Rosana?, come on.
-
the two sublime solos in rosanna more than make up for the inherent cr@pness of the rest of the song.
-
Does that include the Cheez-O-Rama synth solo?
I'm not the biggest Toto fan I have to say, I saw them live and nearly fell asleep. But great musicians, and even though the songs are often unbelievably schmaltzy, they've got something - I really like "Rosanna", for all its faults.
-
no. and it doesn't include the ocarina effect synthesiser solo in africa either.
-
Did they sing 'Africa'?
If so it has a funny lyric in it.
The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what's right
Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what's deep inside, frightened of this thing that I've become
-
When will people learn: Cheesy does not necessarily mean cr@p?
-
Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
thats the lyric me and our kid always rip the piss out of, I mean come on - thats just rediculous.
as for the Rosanna solos, they do nowt for me - rather listen to Quo

Me too, it doesn't even fit the phrase, it's well funny signing it

When it comes to stupid lyrics nothing beats "Land down under" by Men at Work.
"Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich"

but that song has charm which is more than I can say for Africa or Rosanna
-
Africa is a great song.
The vocal harmonies are really cool.
It's of its time though - look at Bostons Third Stage. Ultra cheesey, but still cool. And despite the HUMUNGOUS guitar playing, Yngwie and Whitesnake were also pretty cheesey during the 1980's...

+1
But when were Yngwie and Whitesnake ever not cheesy??? Not that I'm suggesting David Coverdale actually smells of cheese, he's far too Shakespearean for that. He probably smells like Sir Walter Raleigh after a night at a high-class bawdy house.

Fair point.
-
I think this was the first example I ever heard of Lukathers playing, and it put me off for life  http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=TtVsJmCz3NU
edit - actually this is quite cool http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Nc2IBXdH8t0&feature=related
-
what's wrong with the first one? :?
-
I just dont think it fitted the backing track at all, that kinda thing benefits from the less is more approach imo. cr@p tone as well. He's still a better guitarist than I ever will be but I like to criticise :P

Watch out lads, Tom's getting c--ky!
I know what you mean though, it's a generic, "obvious" sort of solo BUT it is a kind of playing I like. And the bit where he plays really fast - I can't decide whether it's (a) tasteless showing off or (b) still showing off, but only for a few seconds so it's actually rather tasteful and cool. :?
-
I really like Lukather, not only his playing which is amazing but he seems really funny and down to earth. I'd love to go out for a drink with him and I'm sure he's got loads of stories to tell. Here's an interesting clip of him playing with Satch http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=RQvHno4ZudY&feature=related, he looks a bit worse for wear on this performance 8)

That's a great song :) I always like the G3-style jams even though a lot of them have mindless shreddage, its still good to watch!
-
what i really want to ask him about is his "haircut"...

it's (b).

I think you're probably right Dave.

Is it just me or is he morphing in to Bobby Ball as he gets older?
-
-
Philly you should've seen when I tried showing him Rosanna.
Within 3 seconds he said it was a total pile of sh1t   .

Satch plays him under the table on that clip, Lukather's very first solo is just a joke, completely lacking in any taste (it's like he's not even listening to what the rest of the band are doing).

Finally got round to watching that... god it goes on a bit doesn't it? (and I'm someone who - just about - has the patience to listen to Mountain's 30-minute version of Nantucket Sleighride  )
Agreed, Satch's playing is way more tasteful and appropriate - strange when he's known as the shred guy and Lukather's the play-for-the-song session man. Guess he was in the mood to show off that night.
By the way, I see the Bobby Ball thing... but there's a hint of Ron Jeremy too isn't there?
-
satch is excellent too, he's definitely up there among my favourites. I guess you could make the argument that lukather is playing in satch's back yard- satch is the master (or one of, at least) of those g3-type concerts with jams etc., while presumably luke isn't as used to it.
Could be wrong though... i'd be happy to be able to play as well as either of them to be honest...

It is except the guitar solo :D :P

is anyone debating that?
