Looking for a cab to go with my dual rectifier but dont want to break the bank with a mesa, looking to spend no more than £350, and its hard to come by used on ebay.
V30s have been suggested but in nearly all the youtube and other clips I think they sound awful compared to other speakers, they seem to sound a bit shrill or harsh; the youtube demo from acsteve sound perfect with blackbacks (but i cant find any info about them not even on the celestion site). Are there any other speakers i should be looking at? what aobut the Marshall 1960 or 1936 cabs? others?
I dont mind mixing and matching cabs with the head, such as other brands. There are two I have seen with vintage 30s - a warwick dragon 412 and a matamp 412 both around £300, but I want to make sure that I'm gonna like the vintage 30s first.

I'd go for a Matamp cab if you can - superb cabs, solid as a rock, and will be similar to Mesa/Bogner cabs in tone given the similar construction levels. Beefy cabs = beefy tone.
'Blackback' Celestions are vintage speakers, I believe they are G12H30s from the seventies. The closest new model is the G12H30 Heritage (55Hz bass cones like the originals) and they are great speakers, but they're expensive.
V30s are the speaker of choice for most Mesa users, so I'd go with them if I were you. They're not that expensive to change if you don't like them. The most important thing is to get the right cab first, and for that I'd go with the Matamp :)

I'm looking for the same thing but with a less tight budget i think (I have a Mesa F-50 head).
How would an Orange 4x12 compare to the Dual Rec 4x12?
-
The Orange cabs are great too - nice and beefy. I think they'd work well with a Mesa....
-
Compared an oversize Mesa 4x12 with an Orange PPC412 when I was out cab shopping. The Mesa was louder, but mainly because it punched out a lot of upper mids which I found to be quite shrill. The Orange was a lot warmer and beefier.
And, of course, the Orange was half the price!
-
obviously, you can always mix speakers - and g12h and V30 is a classic pairing.
-
...so the orange is generally 'better'?
-
Orange are good with Rectos.
I used a Framus Dragon (stereo, v30s, marine ply) with a Dual Recto for a while & that sounded OK. Cheaper too.
-
The Orange was my preference. Been using it for 18 months now and I love it - although it's a killer to take to gigs (heavy & no casters).
I could see the Mesa really cutting through a band mix well, but it just didn't work for me.
Frankly, even if I had preferred the Mesa, I would have bought the Orange - you get a lot of cab for your money and the Mesa is just plain overpriced (unless you're in the USA).
-
my Laney 4x12 was only £200
fair enough its not the best but its bloody loud and i can imagine a rectifier would sound pretty sweet.
-
My 2 cents..........
Get the H&K VC (Viet Cong hahahahahahahaaaaa) series cab with
greenbacks in it......very good mids.
We did an more extensive cab shootout and it sounded best by miles and miles to our second favorite cab (which was the cheaper series H&K),
The worst cab was actually the mesa recto cab (overpriced shite), the second
to last cab was the EVH cab......
And..... don't save too much money on the cab, in the equation Amp+cab
it is half the sound, so make a smart choice because a bad cab will destroy your tone (I've had this happen....not nice).
Just my thoughts on the subject.

Get the H&K VC series cab
Think it may be your lucky day.
I'm selling a Hughes & Kettner VC412A30 for £350 (new £550)
It's in excellent working order (except for one of the castor wheels is slightly jammed - easily replaceable). Its loaded with 4 Celestion Vintage 30's and sounds amazing for any rock/metal. I'm not selling it because I don't like it, I just need to downsize to a 1x12 combo. Very reluctant to see my half stack go!
It also comes with a hughes and kettner cover (worth £75) that only usually comes with the custom class cabs. This has a few imperfections and scratches but hey thats its job!
Pictures are here: http://s221.photobucket.com/albums/dd305/scenesfromamemory/Cab/
Sending is not viable. I'm in Cambridgeshire and collection would be good, but I would be happy to met halfway etc.
Thanks!
(if i should relocate this to seconds out then i will, but i don't think I can post there :? )
