Title: New guitar day - Fender Stratocaster Plus
Post by: Scotty477 on June 13, 2008, 12:05:18 AM
I took delivery of my latest guitar today, a Fender Strat Plus.

I've had a Japanese Strat before but I wasn't keen on the pronounced arch of the fretboard. This one has a solid flat slab of rosewood and is a lot more enjoyable to play.

I'm not sure if I'll be keeping the pups in it, although at first listen they sound pretty damn good. It has gold Lace Sensors.

I'll be keeping an open mind about the pups. Although I obviously know first hand about the quality of BKP's in a LP, I know zero about single coil pups.

Anyhow, here it is.....

Cool, looks quality. Though i hate that pickguard ;) i really cant stand toirtoiseshell or anything like that. reminds me of granny carpet.

Is that a LSR roller nut too?

I take it this isnt all stock and is second hand?

Wierd. I was seriously close to pulling the trigger on a Strat Ultra of about the same era there at the weekend.

Fender did make some lovely stuff around that time, to be completely fair to them. Some awful cr@p too, but the good stuff was damned good.

Yeah it's the LSR roller. As far as I can tell it's all stock. The guitar is a '97 Strat Plus (the last year they made it) - second hand but in tremendous condition.  It has Sperzel locking tuners, TBX tone control and a tremset.

If I do get BKP's, I'll be keeping the same look. Plain pickguards look ok but I like a guitar to stick out in a crowd - even if it is a granny carpet

I once saw a steel pickguard that would look awesomely sexy on there...

toirtiseshell just looks like a random, uninspired pattern... plain can be very plain but, eh. i dont even like to see it on my pics :D lol...

I have to say that is an exceedingly good-looking strat! :D

Love the pickguard, love the pickup covers. Looks great.

Looks great to me, and I love pearloid and tortoiseshell scratchplates!  :D

Just to be pedantic   , I think the tuners are satin-finished Schallers, not Sperzels.

Even though modern Fenders aren't as "loved" as their vintage stuff, they have a real purposeful, functional quality that I really like.  And they have such fantastic stocks of rosewood!  You'll almost never see a new Gibson fingerboard that nice.

I like it too. Strats are timeless  in my opinion. I'd say give it a good playing and see what you think after a while and if you then decide to BKP her then we can all chip in. It certainly works well with the carpet.

That was my mistake.

They are indeed Schaller tuners. I've given them a full workout, including a few mild dives and the guitar stayed in perfect tuning. Hell the guitar arrived through the post  in tune  :D

I played it for around an hour last night and didn't have to touch the tuning  :D

As for the rosewood fretboard, I would agree. Fender do seem to have a much better quality of rosewood on their guitars. The rosewood on this appears to be of high grade. It's dark and very, very smooth indeed.

  Aw, you know me and my OCD about tuners.  I just couldn't keep quiet.....

That fireplace is damned nice, gives me an idea of what to do in my lounge!! :)

Other than the pickguard, it looks good! 'Grats on the purchase.

i have an '89 Strat Plus, it has a slightly larger Nut, but still a roller nut. It keeps in better tune than some of my Floyd equipped guitars! I did ditch the pickups for some Kinnmans in the late 90's.. about time for another change me thinks.

Whats a good BKP single coil? for the tones of John Mayer, Eric Johnson, SRV etc?

Yup - Philly is right about the schallers

Interestingly we keep an Earvana nut  in stock that is a direct drop in replacement for an LSR roller nut.

Just a quick update on this guitar.

I gave it a decent workout for around an hour this afternoon, through my practise amp - a Vox AD30VT on the AC30TB setting.

I have to say that the guitar plays and sounds wonderful. The neck pup is amazingly responsive when playing solos and the best word to describe the overall tone that the guitar gives out with this pup is 'vintage' - which is what I was looking for. The middle pup is ok and I would use that for basic chords.

The only thing that detracts from the guitar is the bridge pup. It's very sharp and I can't see me using it much.

Another pleasing aspect was the tuning (again) - it didn't need tuned at all during the hour that I was playing it.

As much as I like the neck and middle pups initially, I'll probably be looking at BKP's for this guitar. I'm pretty sure that it's the overall build quality that is contributing to my enjoyment of playing it and I know from experience just how much difference BKP's can make to an already good guitar.

I'd like to keep the vintage feel if I can and have a bridge pup that I can use for a slightly hotter tone.

I'm open to suggestions here for replacement BKP's.
