Title: Who here is totally happy with their rig??
Post by: Spitfire on June 14, 2008, 01:19:29 PM
So who has "completed" their rig??... has everything they want, and can say that they do not want to buy anything else.. even a pickup.

I have all the amp i will ever want, maybe another 4x12 if i play in a band again.. but thats a change in circumstance.

But for guitars, im way way off... i need to sell one guitar and buy a telecaster and a les paul, but i also want something pointy like a jackson rhoads.. but thats a lil OTT..

Nope. That's all I'm saying, to save you all from a ranting paragraph of GAS, money and pretty much anything else.

Haven't even got a rig really, I'm still at school so i'm playing though a dodgy Peavy backstage.

In terms of my amp rig, perfectly happy, effects too, just gotta add a rackmount tuner and a MIDI controlled looper/bypasser for my pedals and I'm all good and finished ampwise.

Guitarwise....I need pickup upgrades on them, and a replacement bridge on my ESP/LTD, to get them playing as they should. However, I also have plans for a Bernie Rico Jr Jekyll 727, which hopefully I'll be able to get next year, and that should be all sorted then.

So basically, soundwise I am sorted, guitarwise, technically I am almost sorted, its more just would be nice to have a custom guitar.

Apart from the booster pedal I'm discussing in another thread, I'm all done  :D

i'm happy from the point of view that anything I've bought in the last couple of years, I don't want to get rid of, but i'm definitely not averse to buying more either...

Same here, I'm happy with everything I have but what I have isn't nearly enough.
Im not big on huge guitar collections but I would love a decent 12 string acoustic and 6 string acoustic and a billion more amps and microphones-keyboards-recording gear

My Crawler equipped Les Paul fulfills my need in a 6-string, and likewise my Spanish. I still need a better 12(or 10)-string, a solidbody 7, something with 24 frets and a trem, a bass, an 88-key keyboard, a decent amp, a delay pedal, a distortion preamp, and possibly a better wah pedal. So no, not by a long shot.

I'm incredibly satisfied with my current setup. I have a few more planned purchases to make, but there is an end-point in sight.

That is an excellent way to describe my situation as well.
At some point I really need to be looking into getting a better backup guitar. The current disgraceful Squire strat that I currently take to gigs is embarrassing, it is so bad.
At some point I might buy a wah pedal. Also at some point I really should upgrade my tuners on my LP.
At some distant point in the future I might even buy another amp to kick in as a lead boost - can never quite get enough volume boost for solos - that's the nature of a single MV tube amp I suppose.

Im not satisfied at all, to be honest. i bought all my gear that i have now when i was younger and had no idea about any technicality. i only play in my bedroom and ive got a 150watt Randall head and cab for a start.

Ive got a marshall vibrotrem which i really like and a modded Boss EQ, they are the only things im planning on keeping.

bought my peavey v-type because i thought it looked cool, its lasted me this long but i wanna find a guitar that really speaks back at me, rather than just take abuse.

I'de keep my miracle men aswell they rock!!

I read this thread last night and thought to myself (aside from wanting a strat) I am totally happy with my current setup.

So, why is it that this morning I have bought another delay pedal?  I already have a cheap but cheerful Artec analog delay that sounds absolutely fine, but today came across an MXR Carbon Copy on ebay and thought "ooh, another 250ms of delay time!" and, knowing I've got a bit of disposable cash at the moment, I clicked on the 'buy it now' button.

I suppose that although I might be satisfied with the kit I have at any given time, exposure to the internet where I'm constantly coming across new gear reviews, people on forums raving about the latest big thing, new flavours of the month etc, there's always going to be a part of me that wonders "I wonder how that'll fit in with my rig?"

For me, part of the fun of being a guitarist is experimenting with different sounds, discovering new equipment and building a knowledge of how guitars, effects and amps interact with one another.  As long as that's the case I guess I'll continue to buy new things to mess around with.

Yes, it is our curse and somewhat like an endless cycle. You are happy with your rig but end up buying something new anyway. Then, you realize that you know longer like it (which also means you are no longer completely happy with your rig) so you sell it to buy something else. And it goes on and on and on.........

I don't think that there can ever be an end point.

I've been playing since I was 13, a depressing 24 years ago, and I've never really been someone who was into GAS.  I've probably made more guitar purchases in the last year than in all the preceeding 23...  I'm nearly always happy with the way I sound, but I frequently lust after other sounds... For example, I'm not what you would ever call a "high gain" player, but I'd love to but myself a decent Engl, or similar, just to have it there on tap.  I've never been into Les Pauls, but if I had the cash I know EXACTLY the Feline Lion I'd ask Jonathan to build for me.

A wise man once said "life is a journey, not a destination".  I think it was Mr Miyagi.

Or possibly Yogi Bear.  I often get them mixed up...

Mark.

As far as amps go, I'm there with my new Mesa Express head (unless I decide, in a year's time, that I'm going to play nothing but black metal, and go on tour).

Pedal-wise, I'm not done, but i know what I want - a BB Preamp, a Radial Plexitube, a ZVEX Box of Metal, and a Keeley compressor. Oh, and a hard bypass md for my wah pedal.

Guitars - no. I'm happy with most of what I have - I'm still totally undecided on what to do with my Holy Diver loaded PRS SE Singlecut, because I've been so busy I haven't even had a chance to play it through my new amp yet!

However, my Epi LP will go at some point. The LP is a very dark sounding guitar, even with a set of Mules in it, and doesn't really sing as it should. To replace it, I'll likely look for a good second hand Gibson, so I can drop the Mules straight in, or a PRS SC245.

I also really want one of the new rosewood necked PRS Custom 24s. PRS guitars, as several members on this forum will attest, are viciously addictive. So, the GAS isn't gone, but it's not too bad right now.

I'm happy with my guitars, once I sell that lot.  Doesn't mean I won't buy/sell many more in the future though.

As for amps, cabs, FX and accessories I don't really have a "rig" as such because I'm strictly stay-at-home (no gig, no rig).  So I tend to buy pedals and things more for fun than with any kind of "big picture" in mind.  If that situation were ever to change, there'd be lots of work to do.  No doubt I'd evolve into Twinfan or Hunter.

Sound-wise I'm totally happy with my rig.  The only things I'd like to get for it are non-signal affecting things to make it more practical & tidier:

A pedal board to house my pedals & footswitch
A pedal power supply with an IEC power socket.
An SKB 4U rack case.
Some slightly taller feet for the Savage

Aside from that, there are things I'd like to get to supplement my main rig (i.e. some alternative sounds) - there's no such thing as "enough" guitars :), & there are always other amps I'd like to have lying around.  But my "main" rig is pretty much set...

Simply that I would endeavour to emulate you by exercising exquisite good taste in choosing only the very finest amps and FX.  :)

(Or possibly that I would go even more mental and blow loads of money on a new amp every other week, like I do now with guitars.   )

Legra MDV602, Drop B, 11-62, into ISP decimator into Powerball with an EQ20 in the FX loop cutting ~6db of 400Hz and 3db of 6Khz, into an ubercab, powerball 4th channel, gain on about 3.5, bass on ~4, open mids ~6, focussed mids ~4, treble ~6, prescence ~6, depth punch ~3 is VERY close to the main "Sound in my head".

So

NO

'Very close' will never be enough, and besides, thats just one sound. My head has quite a few sounds in it    Ergo, I need more gear

I think the only thing I would like is an orange AD30 head, and a Mongotone 2x10 cab, then I will have to fit it the orange JJ Tesla tubes and I'll be ready to take on the world...

I have what I would call a 'rig' but I could do with a cab to beef it up.

i'm not 100% happy... but having said that i really going in the right direction with it i think. i have a marvellous head and a collection of guitars i'm proud of. i think i'd like a nice booster, maybe a new cab of some sort, a selection of pro cables, and a new moddler maybe... but these aren't things i need.

tinkering with my rig gives me alot of pleasure, i hope its never 100% sorted. in any case, even if it was, i know i'll always be seduced by a cool V.

also thinking about the korg pitch black.

I was till practice this evening, when I combined a JMP Combo and an AC-30 in some kind of perfect alliance.
