Title: Quick review of Bodenhamer's Maxon OD808
Post by: hhcave on June 14, 2008, 02:21:01 PM
So my pedal arrived today - it was the Maxon OD808 with the Chaos Mod and True Bypass from Joe Bodenhamer.

All i can say is wow. I got it to tighten up my tone when playing metal stuff and it excels at doing this to the point that my Boss MT-2 has been taken out of the pedalboard as the Maxon does all the MT-2 can do but better (in term of tightening up sound; i hate the distortion on the MT-2).

When used with the gain channel on my amp i put the overdrive on 0 and tone and  balance at 12 o'clock and it really does a great job at tightening up the overall sound. It colours the amp's original sound quite a lot however i feel it does this in a good way. It makes the amp sound like there is more distortion and slightly more saturated (which makes it feel easier to play as you feel as if there is more gain) however the notes still remain crystal clear. (think In Flames?)

It is quite a dark sounding pedal really however it is extremely clear and dynamic (i suppose as a result of the Chaos Mod). It is also a fairly loud pedal if that makes sense? (ie. the boost is quite large in term of volume)

I must say i'm not too keen on it's OD use (with the clean channel) however thats not what i bought/modded it for. A great OD sound comes from the Fulltone OCD!

Some minor points: It was fairly cheap compared to boutique pedals as it cost me around 100 quid even with postage (from the US). Also it's got a really awesome huge blue LED now that is so bright (in place of the normal red LED)!

I HIGHLY recommend this pedal to anyone looking for an OD pedal to tighten up their sound (i use it with a Mesa F-50 which has a sort of Rectifier type distortion). I'm sure the other Bodenhamer pedals are great too (particularly the Bloody Murder) so check them out!
