Title: Got an Enhancer(TM)
Post by: hunter on June 15, 2008, 10:00:48 PM
I experienced this thing with my back open combo amp that it sounded huge back to a wall or corner but lost its punch when on a stage or in a bigger room. Recently I came across this Enhancer thing, which is supposed to give your combo amp a turbo boost.

And damn, it works very very well, makes my little Budda sound extremely big without annoying the band mates or neighbours. Such a cool invention, a little geeky maybe, but is real cool as it makes you hear yourself much better without the need to turn the amp louder.

What does it do other than slanting it back?

It projects the sound from the back of the open cab through a horn to the front. Extends the body and bass volume and makes it sound bigger up front. It really works, unbelievable how simple it is ...

That's cool, yeah. I bet you could get a pretty good room effect by miking both the speaker and the... horn. But then you need two mics.

If you put a cab close to a wall, you get an approximate boost of +3dB, so this gizmo works on that principle, and projects the sound forward. You may want to check phasing issues with/without the unit, but with correct mic selection (read: not omni), i don't think there will be issues to be concerned about :)

Have you got a link to a website? Who is it made by? It looks like a really great idea. How much did it set you back?

It cost me 110 GBP, I find the price OK, it's practically like a well made 1x12" cab, made of Birch Ply with dovetail joints etc. - then if you think about taxes, retail margin, import shipment and customs, it doesn't leave much for the manufacturer.

It resonates well and has rubber feet on bottom and side is easy to transport with a top amp handle.

potential bone-head question but would it make a big difference to a closed back cab ?

Well, given that there's no sound coming out of the back of a closed cab, whereas there is sound coming out of the back of an open-backed cab, then yeah you'd be right in thinking it would not do anything with a closed back cab ;)

Although, it would have some effect, even closed back cabs are subject to the 'proximity effect' of being close to a wall. And the cab not being on the floor will probably make a bit of difference. Would be no where near as dramatic as an open backed cab though :)

Interesting little contraption. I like it.

Well, not dropping £100+ on a tilted stand for a closed-back cab would be a highly recommended course of action, or inaction...

The proximity effect from closed-back cabinets is more likely to derive from the relative position of the front end of the cab in the room. No hole in the back of the cabinet = much less sound at the same relative position! No two ways about that!

Clever contraption.
A friends Dad has some speakers that have tweeters that have an open back, I think in theory to get the treble to get to you at the same time the bass power from the big speakers.
