Title: Martamp/Ceriatone Plexi!!!
Post by: sambo on June 18, 2008, 10:26:48 PM
Haven't actually got my hands on it yet (arriving tomorrow if Parcelfarce don't c--k up!), but Martin just sent a couple of pics...

What do you think chaps?

That looks so cool. Are you getting an orange cab to match? You might want to get an attenuator if woogies experience with plexis is anything to go by :P

When I've got the cash I'll probably go for a matching Orange (or maybe black) 2x12 from Martin, but am completely broke for now! :(

And yeah I think you're probably right about the attenuator.

Apparently it sounds awesome, but unfortunately I didn't get chance to try it out before it got shipped  :(  For some reason Sam wanted it as soon as possible?  Madman...  ;)

It looks superb Sambo, and with a matching cab it'll be the schnitz.  I can recommend both Martin's 2x12 and his 4x12 by the way.  Both Martin and myself are gigging his 2x12s with 'Hot 100' speakers playing 'DC to Ozzy to Natalie Imbruglia and everything inbetween.  I also have one of his 4x12s and that's my favourite cab.

Oh, and Martin plays 'Torn', not me  ;)

Sweeeet !  Very nice in Orange - strangely I've got a thing about Orange recently.
I'll have a 16 ohm hotplate for sale fairly soon if your interested - and the Ceriatone 1987 gets on very well with a hotplate in my expereience. PM me if your interested.

Really cool looking amp.

So, Martin - tell me a bit about your 2x12s...  (I'm in the market, want to sell my Marshall 4x12 for something half the size/weight...).  Couldn't get a great deal of info from your website - I'm kinda thinking that the finish on that "Orange" plexi would suit my amp (see avatar).

+++EDIT+++

By the way, I LIKE "Torn"...

Mark.

Martin's probably at Matamp for the day but I can fill you in on the 2x12.

It's a semi-open back design.  Mainly closed but with a two inch port running the width of the cab.  That stops the tone getting too 'boxy'.  The cab is made from 1/2inch birch ply and the speaker of choice is the Hot 100.  It's a really great speaker, and a bargain too.  I chose it over V30s, G12Hs, a mixture of the two, G12T-75s etc.  I've tried them all in my cab.

Tonally the cab is big, punchy and thick sounding.  Not quite a 4x12, but it's in a pretty close ball park.  So you've got the size/weight of a 2x12 punching close to a 4x12, which is a nice place to be.  An added advantage of the Hot 100s is that they're a fairly light speaker, which helps with the portability.

Mine has a top handle and two side handles, Martin's just a top handle.  Tolex covers, corners, grille cloth etc are all customisable to your preference.  Some coverings can cost more than others though, so this will affect the price.  Your choice of speakers can also be fitted of course, which again affects the price.

I should be a salesman  ;)

Post by: MrBump on June 19, 2008, 09:18:55 AM
Thanks for that...  In relation to cost, what ball park are we talking about?  1/2/3/4 hundred?
Title: Martamp/Ceriatone Plexi!!!
Post by: Twinfan on June 19, 2008, 09:36:41 AM
It really depends on spec.  Your best bet is to contact Martin for a quote, but you're looking at closer to £400 than £100.  These are top quality cabs so they're not as cheap as a Harley Benton  ;)

I'm on the edge here... waiting for the sound of a van pulling up or the doorbell to go... arrrgh! Full review will follow when it arrives.

And I must admit, I sort of like Torn...  I feel dirty...

Think I'm pretty much sold on a 2x12 from Martin then with that recommendation.

And hamfist- I may well be interested, depending on how quickly you want to sell it/how soon I can get the cash! :D

See, Torn rocks!

My standard 2x12 is £350 plus shipping. other than that, Dave's described it perfectly.

I thought Martin's cabs were £350, but I didn't want to second guess him.  I know you guys will probably think I'm biased, but I have tried quite a few cabs/speakers independently and I'm really very happy with Martin's.  They're superb sounding, great value for money, and you can have them built to your colour spec.  What more do you want?
Title: Martamp/Ceriatone Plexi!!!
Post by: _tom_ on June 19, 2008, 10:34:50 AM
Well my tube town 2x12 was £250 from Germany with custom tolex, grille, piping and speaker options. I dont know if it'll be as good quality as Martins though, but its good enough for me :)

I take it the Master knob is controlling the gain and the volume 1 and volume 2 are for the normal and bright channels?

Looks very nice. They are so $%&#ing loud though, mind your ears!!

Master controls overall volume, pre power stage.  Individual channel volumes are 'gain' in the distortion sense.

It's here!!!!!!

BUT I'm not sure if the speaker in the cab I'm borrowing is 50w or not!

Might have to wait until I can get hold of the mate whose cab it is! ARGH!

What happens if say, the speaker is a 30 watt?

EDIT: I should be alright, surely? The AMP won't get damaged, even if I blow the speaker, right?
Title: Martamp/Ceriatone Plexi!!!
Post by: MrBump on June 19, 2008, 11:38:31 AM
You COULD damage the amp if a speaker blows - the amp will need to see a load.  That's why it's sometimes a good idea to wire speakers in parallel rather than series.

Mark.

Post by: Twinfan on June 19, 2008, 11:49:13 AM
If you're running it through one 30w speaker BE CAREFUL!

Just keep the volume down and you should be OK  :)

Post by: sambo on June 19, 2008, 11:49:30 AM
It sounded AMAZING, until it went dead...  :o

It was working fine, and then went quiet suddenly and then cut off completely. I'm just hoping the amp isn't damaged.

I kept it low for a while- fine. Turned it up quite loud- absolutely fine. Brought it down to low-levels again to be careful- fine. 2 mins later still at low volume- it goes dead.

AGH! Needless to say, there is a lot of swearing to be heard in my house at the moment.

Check the valves, make sure they're all in the sockets properly and that they're glowing.  Something may have been dislodged in shipping.  Then get back to us.

Martin- no fuses in the house, but just rang the local guitar shop and they've got some. So I'll just sprint into town to get a couple.

Well the fuses I got from Machinehead turned out to be the wrong size (doh!) so I'm having to endure one of the most painful waits of my life! Should have one by tonight, which will (hopefully) fix the problem.

Can't say I like your colour choices that much, but it isn't revolting. I guess Orange heads are usually a bit smaller etc.
Can you not drop into your local electrical store, any fuse works doesn't it?

Update:
Seems one of the output valves has died from Sambo's decription of it having a milky deposit on the inside of the glass. Soon as he's back off hol, I'm taking a trip down there to fit a new pair and bias them. Unusual, but it happens.
Service with a smile!  :)

Sorry to hear the bad news Sambo, but the amp looks amazing. I'd love to see a pic of the guts if you or Martin has one.
If/when I'm back in the UK full-time I think I'll be getting a Martamp of some kind, I think a Ceriatone Overtone Special in that orange basket weave cab would be tasty  8)

Cheers Ginga. I don't have a pic of the guts unfortunately, but Martin may have.

I can definitely recommend the Ceriatone/Martamp combo. Looks fantastic, build quality is top-notch, and (for the 5 minutes I have had so far  ) the sound was awesome too.

EDIT: And of course the service you get with Martin is fantastic. Unfortunately I am finding that out the hard way, but it's reassuring.

The bottom line is, I do this because of the buzz I get from having happy customers, so it's important to me to get Sambo's amp up and running again. I would be going down there tomorrow, were it not for his holiday. I could just post some valves, but then there's the issue of biasing.

Here's some pics I have, one showing the offending valve!  :x

I am impressed with Martin's attention to detail and customer service ethic.

I am having him make me a special project for the workshop:
A low power power amp 10w and a rack case to go with it , so I can get rid of my Marshall JCM800 split channel(2205) which is just too loud for using in the workshop.

I will end up using several rack preamps (Soldano, Engl, Rocktron Pirhana and maybe an ADA MP1) via a TC effects unit and BBE and a mixer into the power amp.

The power amp will be single ended so I can change between different power tubes if I wish till I find the one that is my fave tonally.

Because I use Celestion sidewinders which are hugely efficient speakers (103db/m or whatever) every Watt seem to count double
So a 10w amp will still be blooming loud

Martin has just left after replacing and biasing the power valves. Amp is now in full working order! :D :D

Customer service at it's best, really; I can't thank him enough. :)

Also discussed a cab which is the next purchase on the cards, (to replace the (very) poor cab I'm having to run it through) which will hopefully be ordered in the near future.

Very happy!

Top stuff Sam - turned out to just be a faulty valve then?  A pain in the backside, but one of those things that can happen.

Martin's actually bought a valve tester now so he can check things more thoroughly before they go out, plus he's going to ship new amps with a few spare fuses just in case.

A matching cab will look, and sound, awesome.  You'll not need another Plexi type amp ever again.

Can you get some sound clips done of the Tangerine Dream?

Either just a faulty valve or Possibly something to do with the speaker cable I was using having a dodgy connection (doh!).

Unfortunately not, I'm afraid. And they probably wouldn't do it justice even if I could, because of the shoddy cab. But some time when I have the new cab sorted out I'll look into getting an SM57 or something.  :)

I think I'd prefer "even" more thoroughly!  :D

Not sure a valve tester would have helped in this case, as the glass of the valve had cracked at the base, caused (probably) by the speaker cable being intermittent (actually completely o/c when we first powered the amp back up), thus leading to severe overheating and weakening of the envelope. It's also possible this was a structurally weaker or damaged valve, but not likely IMO.
In any case, my normal procedure of running the amp into a dummy load with a sine wave, measuring it's clean output power, checking all the appropriate voltages and playing the amp is pretty rigorous. The tester will help with matching, and detecting the very rare electronically weaker valve.

Glad it's all sorted out now Sambo, and good to meet you.

Top stuff Sam - turned out to just be a faulty valve then?  A pain in the backside, but one of those things that can happen.

Martin's actually bought a valve tester now so he can check things more thoroughly before they go out...

OK then, EVEN more thoroughly  ;)

Sorry I did you a dis-service matey, I didn't mean to imply you didn't test things before they went out

Yeah just to clarify that- the amp was perfect when it arrived. The guilty party is probably my mate who lent me the suspect speaker cable!

Cheers Beatle and Horsehead. Unfortunately not near Yorkshire mate, otherwise I would take you up on that offer!

Cheers Martin, you too. And let me know when you get those pics up on the website- quite looking forward to seeing them :)

What a great looking amp!
I hope you enjoy it, a good amp is an instrument in itself.
Great customer service too!
