Title: Given the choice, a 1x12 or a 2x10?
Post by: gamesandy135 on June 23, 2008, 05:25:22 PM
So, pretty much as the title suggests.  Given the choice, would you guys opt for a 1x12 extension cabinet or a 2x10?
It's for my Laney, I want to get a matching ext. cab and I'm not really sure what the benefits of either would be (Laney do matching 1x12/2x10 cab).
I suppose a bit fuller/more bass with a 1x12 and more chime/top-end with the 2x10?
Anyway, what would you go for?

1x12 every time :) i think 12" just sound as an amp is supposed to sound.

1x12, because it just sounds better to me.

I tend to agree about the 1x12, just I've never used 10" speakers.
So, think I'll stick with the consensus and get the 1x12.

don't know how familiar you are with a 1x12 ported cab(a Thiele, for ex.), but they sound as big as a 4x12 in my book

Because I'm crooked. A 1x15".

Good mix with an existing 2x10".

A 1x15?  Madness I say.

I'm not familiar at all with ported cabs.  I'll do a bit of research.

If you DO decide on a 1x10 the Celestion G10 vintage is the best all rounder I've heard, it has a very big sound, and the bass is never flabby or annoyingly overpowering.

I take it your current amp is a 1x12?  I'd match it with a 1x12 cab.  Nice 1/4 stack then  :)

Yeah, current setup is a 1x12 combo.
You're right though, would be a nice little mini stack  :)
I think I'll go for the 1x12 all said and done.

Out of curiosity, and conversations sake, why would a guitarist go for a 2x10 or 10" speakers overall?  Just for the reason stated above, punchier top-end/mid-range?

They are quite punchy, and by no means a lesser option.  They're nice and compact, therefore lighter, making them easier to lug around.

Fender amps have used a variety of different sized speakers since the 50s, but Marshall started the standard 12inch size with their JTM45 half stacks.  It was what they could get at the time, and the legend was born.

Personally, I'm going to get a Fender-style 2x12 combo at some point as they sound lovely for cleans.

Doh!  Cheers mate!  Dodgy typo!

I mean a 2x10 Fender-style combo.

I'd go for the 2x10.  You already have a 1x12 in the amp so this would give you the best of both worlds and open up options for recording.  You could mic a 12inch and a 10inch and then chose the best one at mixdown, or blend them.

And the 2x10 configuration does not have less bass, it's just that the low end is raised slightly , say (total guess) 15hz higher.  I find that this adds more high bass/low mid punch.  Also, smaller coils have a quicker response and hence quicker attack.

I used to have the Laney mini stack like this, the extension cabs are the same size anyway so you won't be able to tell whether there's 2x10 or 1x12 inside.

If I was going for just the combo I'd say 1x12 although the Vibroverb 2x10's are sweet amps

here is what one Thiele 1x12 leads to!!.....check out the ease and versatility of such a set up....a head and a Thiele is sooo easy on the back-paired with a combo is killer as well-we can take 1 cab,2 cabs,etc...sound is huge!!!(of course, these are all loaded with EVm 12L speakers-a load,indeed....)

I'm now a big fan of muxing speaker sizes in a rig, I've got a 4 x 12 and another 4 speaker cab containing 2 8" speakers and 2 15" speakers.

I'd say go for the 2 x 10", as the breadth of acoustic options this gives you will be really nice, IMHO :)

I had the same 2x10" cab, i prefered it over the 1x12, seemed to give a bit more of everything. could've been down to the speaker though..

Thanks for all the advice guys.
I see that opinion is really mixed and down to taste.
I was all but set on the 1x12 but now I'm not so sure.  I was going to get it and change the speaker for the Celestion K-100 as I've heard so many good things about it.
Don't suppose there is an equivalent 10" speaker?
I looked on their site (Celestion) and seen a "Tube 10" speaker that seems roughly in line with a K-100.
That said, I'm discounting other speaker manufacturers of which I have very limited experience.

Ahh, well you didn't say you'd change it for a K-100... I'm going to change my mind from a 2 x 10 to a 1 x 12 in that case :)
