Title: Which HDMI cable for a PS3? To use for Blu-Ray and PS3 games
Post by: Rich78 on June 24, 2008, 10:30:30 AM
Hi.

Im hoping i can have some advise about HDMI cables.
I havent a clue about them.
Ive read we should spend at least 50 quid on one.

Im getting a PS3 in August to use for DVDs and Blu-Ray films.
And to use for the PS3 game too.

On ebay they range from a few quid to £150. Is more the merrier?
Or is there a special HDMI cable for the PS3?

Also there is a version 1.3 and a 1.3a...
Whats the difference?

Cheers. Rich.

Straightwire Super HDMI or HDMI 1.3. Very reasonably priced, excellent performance.

http://www.straightwire.com/

Edit: Sorry, didn't see the 1.3/1.3a question. Lots of good info here:
http://www.hdmi.org/press/pr/pr_20060622.aspx

Hope that helps!

As far as I'm aware, it is a digtal signal, therefore the cable used isn't as important as things like speaker cable.  As long as the 1's and 0's get through then there shouldn't be a difference in quality.

Expensive cables for digital systems are a waste of money, as for as I've been told.

yeah best advice is to go for the cheapest one you can get in the length you need. high quality, gold plated, kitten furred ones are just for chumps who don't like having money. Apparently.

...Ahem. That's the last time I try a joke on this forum. I don't drink either, surprising seeing that I'm a) Scottish and b) Recently been a student.

Though to compensate my lab is full of Amphetamine, Methamphetamine (essentially speed/meth) and MDMA (Ecstasy). My boss reeeeeally trusts me. Luckily I don't do drugs at all... I get anxious if i have to take an asprin...

Get a digital optical cable for sound!!!

Then set-up = perfect!

If you dont use the TV speakers that is.

You want to be using a decent 5.1 system minimum to fully appreciate the ps3 :)

And i dont mean those cr@ppy package sets you sometimes get with dvd players those = FAIL

Yep, got a 5.1 set up at mo.

I dont think it has a optical cable option tho.

Any make and model recommendations?

Something perfect for the PS3 perhaps...?

well i presume you are using a receiver with the 5.1 setup? it should have a optical in and a digital coax in.

If it has optical i recommend you use that as its simpler, but if not you can use the component cables to an auxillary input on the receiver and still get dolby pro logic II

Not stupid at all, i was vauge. Playing the same Xbox 360 game on the different TVs (one hooked up via the HDMI thingy and using the scart jobbie on my tv) i never noticed a dramatic difference. As for HD content- apart from the Xbox, nope. Standard DVD player all round. Bit of a waste really, to be fair he is a colossal tool.

My friend has a virgin media box with hdtv and all that, he was watching on normal then switched to the same programme on HD, I couldnt tell the difference. So for me HD is a bit of a rip in my very limited experience! However my 360 does look a bit better when you run it through a hdmi tv rather than scart on a standard, though thats not really a fair comparison because ones an old SDTV and the other a newer LCD HDMI ready one :)

I could always tell the difference between HD and non-HD telly. I think you probably need quite a big screen to appreciate it though?

Depends on the source and if the display has been even remotely set up properly. There is a huge difference between 480i (SD) and all progressive and HD formats.

I can see the difference between an xbox 360 on an SDTV and a HDTV really easy, make sure you got the HD turned on in the 360's settings, that or your blind!!!

on DVD vs bluray, I can still see the difference, but it's only a tiny bit sharper, unless you got a big explosion with tons of glass flying around, then it's like wow, other wise it's doesn't look worth the extra money to me

Right i am going to get flamed to hell for this probably but you WILL NOT notice much difference using a HDTV with an xbox360 as it isn't really a HD console it has to upscale everything thus giving no dramatic picture increase.

I didn't think the 360 was HD unless you got the separate HD drive as an add-on - but I know nothing about games consoles, so I've probably got that wrong.

And HDMI does not automatically mean that the source is 1080i or above. There are many progressive scan DVD players that have HDMI and cannot scale higher than 480p.

Component video can scale (or output natively) from 480i to 720p. HDMI can scale (or output natively) upwards of 1080p.

From a developer mate the 360 renders in 720 and then upscales to higher resolutions (or downsamples to standard resolutions) for game play usage.

I believe the HD-DVD is also natively 720p but then wouldn't buy a console for video playback anyway.

Well i got a 360 and very recently upgraded from my old BEKO 22" cheapy to a samsung series 40".

The picture is noticably sharper, but i think that HD is mostly good for versatility (picture) and size. 40" is pretty big and its litterally (just measuring up)  about 6.5 CD jewel cases thick. that makes it much lighter than my old 22" which was probably about 25-30 CD cases thick.

Also sound supposed to be much better. I think to appreciate the best of HD you'd need a Full-HD Tv 42"+ with a very nice 5.1/7.1 surround and digital cables. Most importantly, optimal veiwing distance, 6-7 foot, and well set-up surround system, perfect circle e.t.c.

Also the manufacturing comapnies have started to take great pride in creating the most elegantly designed TV's. They just look so cool even the littler ones!!

I've got a 42 HD TV and Sky HD. The most noticable difference is when watching sport in my opinion. With films you can see it and it's noticable but sport seems to really jump out at you.

I watch cricket and on the normal channels, through the same sky box on the same TV, you can't really see any detail of the pitch. Watch it on the HD channel, and you can see exectly what the pitch is doing.

Oh and going back a little, someone mentioned using optical cable for the sound output track. I had a friend a few years ago (test / repair engineer working on satalite multiplexers) who told me that the co-axial digital ports were often better. Yes, a digital signal is not dependant on the transmission media, but apparantly the componants used to terminate the optical cables are often cheap and a bit rubbish, i.e. more likely to error or go wrong. Where the co-ax componants were often better quality. That might not be the case these days, I use both and no problmes with either, but I tought I'd mention it.
