Something's changed around here... can't quite put my finger on it.
-
not sure i like it yet!!
lets see what happens with all those smite buttons!!
-
I quite like the new look :)
We need a quick reply function at the bottom though- before i forget what i was going to post! :p
-
not sure I like it yet......don't like change *L*
-
It's weird, It's Opal Fruits to Starburst all over again.
They just don't taste the same. :(
-
Well I was gonna post something else, but this caught my attention
In red at the top of the reply page
"Warning - while you were reading a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post."
So....errrrr......I just noticed theres some solder on my space bar..... :o
-
some of the avatars are looking a bit funny as well... is it me or has jonathan been significantly slimmed down!! mines gone a bit pixelated but its time for a change anyway
-
Ick, rep points. Yeah the old layout was better, more intuitive if you ask me. easier to see the new posts, most popular, and such. The colors are nice, but rep points? ICK!!!!!!! PDT_046
-
Sorry hunter just -1 your rep..not sure about this
Fixed. (repped hunter. He'll probably deserve it for something)
-
The joys of a rep-system have begun already. (They are pointless little games: lets face it, there are plenty of people round here with excelent reputations, and its not because of a number under their username!)
-
Forum looks good but it's acting a little slower than the old one. Maybe that's just my computer. I really don't like the Popularity Contest feature either. Every other forum I've been to with a such thing turned into a big... popularity contest. We don't want that here do we?
-

Exactly. No. I'd prefer it without rep.
(That said, I'll play the game if its here. But I'd rather it wasnt).
-
Yeah it is a bit slower.. it doesnt feel like home any more  The avatars are a bit messed up for me as well.
-
Hmmm now I wanted to applaud some people and got an error message, feature been disabled.
From simple usability/readability principles, the background and text in the new design do not give a good contrast and are tiring to the eye. It's pretty but the old was better readable.
-
i am glad they removed that so quickly

Yeah, OI's logged in, I think he might be watching, getting feedback on the new format from our discussion?
It is prettier. But its a bit cumbersome: like you have to post twice if there have been any posts in the thread while you've been typing. I'd rather the intervening posts than having to send twice.
-

me too!
-

actually i quite like that feature once you get used to it... it does save a certain amount of repitition

Hi All,
Right, to address your points.
- Karma has gone because I agree with everyone's sentiments that it will lead to erm inane popularity contests. It was on by default though.
- Avatars, can't be helped. Try uploading again or selecting a different one.
- Slower forum; the server has been extremely busy with migrations and conversions and is probably now doing routine maintenance behind the scenes which is impacting on service a little. Should resolve itself over the next few hours. It will also be a lot busier with word spreading that the forum has changed with everyone checking it out.
- Attachments weren't working for about 10 minutes, but they are now.
50% of you will like the change, 50% won't. I will try to appease those who don't like certain features. Over the next few days I will be tweaking the forum, for example to try to more easily distinguish threads with new posts.

Ol.
-
Personally, I'm lovin' it so far.
Mark.

Ol.
Ok, cool. Thanks for the heads up. (and for getting rid of the rep system!)
-
Quick reply is handy if you have that available :) One thing that I just noticed, it seems to log me out if I visit a different page then come back to this later.. I did check "always stay logged in" but it didnt seem to work for me..
edit - you should also get rid of post count if possible, that way I dont look like the huge geek I actually am :P
-
Thanks OI! Everything looks good now I think.
-
I like it but I think it would be nicer if the post text was white, to be easier to read. And possibly background a bit darker.
-

I agree, I find the beige text on grey background pretty tiring to concentrate on - and my eyes are pretty good generally.
-
Oooh, I feel a bit funny! PDT_047
It's like being on a ship trying to get your sea legs. I'm sure we'll get used to it soon enough.
-
i really like the look of the new forum. i think it looks a lot better than before. :)
-
Also, new posts in Guitars, amps and effects are not marked BOLD
EDIT: Come to think of it.. somewhere they are, and somewhere they aren't.... I think they should be bold, looks much better that way!
-
This will take some getting used to. But I looks nice, good job!
-
Yeah, it looks more professional, and modern, almost. I like it, it feels a bit strange, but it's nice. :)
-
wow ... Nice, but strange.
-
Wasn't there talk of a new website a while ago? With tone charts and other upgrades?
-
I reckon Ol should bring back rep so he can smite everyone that calls him OI!
-
not certain it's as easy to read as the old one... also it's telling me that every post is a new post...
will reserve judgement until I get more used to it. :)
-
I reckon Ol should bring back rep so he can smite everyone that calls him OI!
I only did because MDV did.
-
I think it's alright, i'm sure it will grow on me but so far i think the old one is better.
But rep points are stupid i don't think they should be incorporated into this forum.
-
I reckon Ol should bring back rep so he can smite everyone that calls him OI!
I only did because MDV did.
OI! Stop that!
-
Quick reply deffo needed.
Other than that - Looks pretty good, needs getting used to - But as long as its as smooth and quick as the previous forum, all is well.
-
Wow! Loving the new look Ol, great job.
-
Is much slicker...just getting used to it
-
I like it... the old one was nice too, but had a little "raw" possibilities, this looks more functionary... Beside I used to like that old "new messagens since your last visit" stayed on the same page... was easy to find something that you had read five minutes ago and thought in something good to add... :D
-
looking better now the post text is in white.
-
Hello
:) It has fun things to play with too!
It makes saying "Hello", as I typed, fun! :P
Also, my edits were because I mucked it up... lol
-
Wasn't there talk of a new website a while ago? With tone charts and other upgrades?
Yeah, it's been mentioned one or two.... million times.
-
ooh we've gone from phpBB to Simple Machines. Can I ask what prompted the move from phpBB? I've been meaning to upgrade one of my forums to phpBB 3 any reason you chose the migration?
Interface looks a bit different but nowt that I'll not get used to in say one post!
-
Those who are reporting the forum as slow, what browser are you using?
Please go to Help > About in your browser and report back.
Thanks
Ol.
-

Doh! I haven't been properly posting long haha.
*Fun text thing*
I'm not getting any speed issues here, I'm using firefox.
-
No speed problems. IE7.
-
firefox 2.0.0.15 workin fine :D
-
firefox 2.0.0.15 workin fine :D
Sames :D
EDIT: Except for that the "stay logged on forever and ever" option doesn't work - I'm logged out every time i leave the forum
-
i suppose i prefer the other system, but its important to keep things changing
edit:
thought the other forum was less corporate, more intimate and friendly looking. of course, i was used to the way it worked, but thats not a valid reason :) the new forum looks more hi-tech and professional for sure.
edit:
but looking around there are some nice new features, i think i will soon get used to it. thanks all for transferring all the user data etc!
-
I'm using IE7 and Vista. Seems slow at some times, then quick at others. Seems very slow opening up the forum afresh, then it's sort of OK.
The "stay logged in" option works for me fine.
-
Safari is good :) But I do have to login each time as well
-
Safari is good :) But I do have to login each time as well
Mac user here as well - although I use Camino (made by Mozilla) and Firefox browsers
I seem to have to log in each time
-
People who are logging in every time - are you just using the username and password boxes at the top of the page?
If you actually click on "Log in" you have the option to tick a "keep me logged in" box.
-
Camino on OS X is running fine- no login (or logout) issues, and the forum is nice and speedy :)
-
IE7 working fine.
Could we have the members' locations back up? Sometimes it's helpful to know where people are from. Other than that I like the new digs, I actually said "Woah" out loud like Keanu Reeves when I first noticed!
-
I'm liking it - nice work Ol :D
It'll take us a while to get used to it, but it'll soon feel like home.
BTW - so glad you removed the Rep points - I saw it briefly last night before it was time to shut down for "quality time with the missus", and I've been worrying about it ever since: "oh no, the wonderful friendly atmosphere here could be seriously affected..."
No need to worry :D
EDIT: And my only recently selected avatar seems to have suffered no ill affects :D But Jonathan, have you been starving yourself??!
EDIT: WOOO! Have you folks noticed the little spanner at the bottom right of your recent post? I clicked it, and I can do this edit in place! (OK, now someone will tell me that was there on the old version!)
-
We've waited a long time for this. It takes a bit of getting used to. It looks slick.
I would have liked a 'quick reply' box though.
-
Safari is good :) But I do have to login each time as well

What's the deal with that Camino? It seems unnecessary when there's a perfectly good version of Firefox for Mac. I seem to remember installing it once, but promptly uninstalling when i discovered it didn't have support for Proxies.
-
I was just thinking to myself that the forum was getting a bit behind the times. I appreciate the all singing, all dancing monster before us, and it will take time to get used to. A quick reply button would be a godsend though, i love those things. Maybe a slight trim of the fat would make this spanking new forum feel like home again.
Oh and does it have the function to embed youtube videos? that would be pimp. is the $%ing swear filter still there? i liked not seeing swear words every three posts.
And the new post! thingy is annoying yet useful, now i get to reply to the mac thingy and say that Safari under Leopard is amazing, firefox is really annoying on mac for me. I just hate firefox in general i think.
-
I think you can check a box in your profile for quick reply, I had a play around, and am using it
-
Yep - there's a quick reply option in your profile settings. Using it now...
-
Quick update:
- I have configured threads with new posts to show up as bold
- Quick reply (as already pointed out) is in your profile.
- Those who don't like the "There have been x posts since you started your reply" can disable it in your profile.
-
Is it just me or has the script logo at the top gone quite fuzzy?
-
Yep, it has!
-
Is it just me or has the script logo at the top gone quite fuzzy?
the original file was a PNG file which is only supported by FF and ie7. ie6 users had a white box instead of transparency. So I have had to revert to using a GIF temporarily whilst I come up with another plan.
Ol.
-
yahoo! i also noticed the disable noticifaction thingy. Score. I loves the new forum! Very strange last night, i just upgraded my laptops operating system (finally on OSX leopard) then checked here and this is snazzy too! very nice :)
-
Great job Ol!

What do you think of Lep? It's a nice system, but the extra boot up time upsets me a bit.

I'm liking it, spaces is fun and the gui is very user lovely. Not started it up since installing it, having to re-download ilife 08 and iwork- not included in the instal like it was in tiger. I love using pages.
-
Ol - I am absolutely LOVING this new layout.
It does mean that I'm getting even less work done today - so where should my company send the invoice to??!

-
I'm going to reserve judgement on the update until I know if it copes with proxies better than the old one.
Update:
Although I prefer the look of the of the old forum this one actually allows me to post (from work) so that has to be a good thing (for me if nobody else)
One thing that has irritated me so far, was on the old board you could use next and prevous to move through sections within the thread this now causes you to navigate actual threads.
Thats fine for newsgroups, but how often do people want to step through each thread in order, but I'm usually more interested in navigating the actual thread I'm in at the time
Only a minor quibble though
-
I actually think the old site looked a lot more classy, I think it's all the black compared to the current various shades of grey.
And like a few others, I keep having to log in every time even though I've checked the 'Always stay logged in' box, it just unchecks itself! I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.15 on a Mac FWIW.
-
I'm having a lot of trouble telling which threads are new when they all say 'NEW!" next to them. Can we get rid of that, or at least have it working correctly? If not, can we have the bold text on the actual new threads in a different colour aswell perhaps?
-
Indy, have you tried clicking on 'mark read' for everything, then afterwards only the actual new ones say 'NEW'
-

EDIT: LOL when I clicked "post" it came up with the message that "a new reply has been posted, you may want to review your message". Guess I should've heeded the warning!

I use PHPBB3 on my forum and much prefer it over 2 and this system thats on here now.
visit my site to view the phpbb3 system fully working.
-
Nice one Will and Sambo
-
Firefox 3 working fine here btw
-
I'm using the latest update of FF2 and it keeps logging me out even when checking the box. I refuse to switch to FF3 because I HATE the thing where it searches through all your bookmarks and recently visited site, it gets so annoying after a while.

You can get rid of that bookmark drop down thing easily.
Type About:config in the URL bar, then click "I'll be careful" and go down the list until you find "browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped". Then double click it so it goes bold and it says "True".
Sorted.

Yep I did try that but then it wont store any of the addresses I've used in the current session in the address bar which I like to have. Picky bugger I know

ditto.
EDIT: just realised the writing has been changed to yellow to be easier to read- excellent! :)
-
Like the duesenberg indy
-
It took me by surprise and being an old goat, new things take a bit of getting used to but I am sure that I will manage. I have a ton of things to read though as I have hardly been near my PC for a few days.
-
Urgh :? I feel like i went to bed in my house and awoke in someone elses!
-

thats becouse you have to mark them all as read, so next time there's a new post, only the new one will be marked as new.
Btw I really think those sticky topics should stand out more from ordinary topics... what do you guys think?
-
I liked the old one :?...but i will get used to it.
-
Btw I really think those sticky topics should stand out more from ordinary topics... what do you guys think?
I would like the stickies to show up more clearly - wonder if it could be shown in the far left hand column
-
Am i alone in not liking the 'new' icon that's to the left of the topic name on each forum page? I think it'd be better if it was just bold (and perhaps yellow/orange), and without that icon. And balls to the ie6 users that made us have to go back to the jaggedy .gif logo format!
-

I wondered about that. I was sure it looked better after the initial update yesterday!
-

Thanks for sorting that one now Ol, very quick indeed :)
-
FWIW, the sticky threads being in bold as well as the new ones does conflict.
What are the icons on the right of the thread name for :?
-

+1
Stickies should be more different.. maybe different color, or kinda more divided from other topics, and not bold like the topics with new posts.
That way there would be no need for those "new" icons on the right.
-
Btw, daaamn I love this quick reply :D kicks ass big time hehehe
And geez, we have 190 guests now! thats crazy!
-
Prefer the stickies now they're in
red
-
Prefer the stickies now there in red
Yeah, dough they might look better if they were the same color as this creamy text here :D
-
... or white like those new "new" icons, which I very much like :)
-
I miss occupations in profiles. Sometimes its nice to know that someone you dont know, so dont know what they do and dont know about stuff, has given some advice or comment from their proffesional field (like martinW with amps, for example).
-
does anybody else get this page sometimes when they try to log-in (EVERY TIME they come to the forum)
"Not Acceptable
An appropriate representation of the requested resource /forum/index.php could not be found on this server.
Apache/1.3.37 Server at www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk Port 80"
-
Nope
-
yeah had that page twice
-
This is a really nit-picky idea, but the little "new" icons would look better if they were outside the actual forum box. For example- outside in the left margin, so that they all lined up straight instead of being all over the place with the text.
So:
- l TOPIC blah blah (new)
- l TOPIC (new)
- l TOPIC blaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah (new)
- l TOPIC Blah ------------------------------------------------------------------(new)
- l TOPIC Blah de blah blah blah (new)
Would be:
(New)- l TOPIC blah blah
(New)- l TOPIC
(New)- l TOPIC Blaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
(New)- l TOPIC Blah ------------------------------------------------------------------
(New)- l TOPIC Blah de blah blah blah

-
Does anyone else get 'invalid password' when they use the 2 boxes in the top right to log in? I have no problem with the full login screen.
Also I miss the 'all topics read' once I come to the end of the new posts in an area. The new web site takes you through the stickies too.
-

Sometimes that happens with me, denied then log in normally in the 'proper' login screen.
Also! It only logs me in automagically when i visit an actual forum. My bookmark is now set up for the main page of the forum, not signed in. But when i click on pickups for example i'm in. Strange, but i can live with it.
-

+1! Shouldnt they be using IE7 anyway? (or a proper browser)

Mark the same thing happens to me, logs me in when I visit a forum but it wont on the main page/index thing.
-
poor Ol, trying to satisfy us all.
But I do agree with Sambo :P
-
And balls to the ie6 users that made us have to go back to the jaggedy .gif logo format!

Errr, some of us who work for a living have particular browsers inflicted upon us, and don't actually have a choice of what browser to use.
This is one of the reasons why web people have to learn to cope with all the browsers (and each one has it's own wierdness)
Having to use Win2K (dosn't cope with IE7)
Standard installs especially on audited machines (my work machine is scanned for software changes multiple times per day )
Inept IT support teams that cant cope with other browsers (yeah it's true to IT dept managers decree a particular browser)
Intranet and web based tools often depend on a particular browser being used (a previous employers software could only cope with early IE versions and Netscape up to about 2 years ago)
Of course some of us use a virtual installer to get around some of these restrictions.
-
Good point, I didnt even think of that..
-
Good point, I didnt even think of that..
Nobody ever does until it happens to them (too many bitter experiences in the past).
Hey Tom youre pretty handy with photoshop, how about getting a nice optimised .gif (or .jpg) logo knocked together (I'm great at suggesting that other people to do stuff)
-
(I'm great at suggesting that other people to do stuff)
Arent we all? :P I would try it but I have no idea what to do as I've never had to do anything for web, or anything really serious on photoshop, I usually just mess around with it and photoshop guitars to see how they'd look
-

And why, pray tell, are you complaining that you cant view BK forums at work ;)
(I'm at work right now too, but still, we should both be working!)
-
Nice one Ol- the "new" icons look much better now I think :)
P.S. I like the thin blue line at the top as well... what's that?

I was about to raise that point :p

Who sir, me sir ?
TBH I spend so much of my day waiting for other people to report back to me, return calls or approve work I have to do, so I need to do something inbetween times :? (honest)
Thinking about it I also need something to do when an end user (whom I seldom deal with in this job) is whittering on about some perceived fault.
Actually I'm finding the new incarnation of the board faster, and I can actually post messages from work.
On monday I will be bringing in a guitar and amp to work to keep myself entertained as I will be the only person in (sort of a compulsary holiday on sunny NI)
-
its the opposite for me - i can no longer post at work as a big filtered screen appears every time i try
the other forum i regularly visit with similar software doesnt have this issue (SMF v1.1.4 rather than 1.1.5)
-

The problem that I had was that I was unable to post about 90% of the time.
I'd post and I would get a preview instead, a slight work around was to quote then the posting only failed 80% of the time, but I know that it was a proxy issue.
So far so good (though I just got that forced logout business for the 1st time
-
First question is (and i know i am probably a stupid git for asking), what is the quick reply feature and has it been taken away?
And second is (this is getting really nitpicky), in the old forum layout if you entered a particular forum - say for instance, in this case, "Time Out" - the actual expanse of the topic layout was much wider (horizontally) and it also accounted for far more topics vertically. The actual number of topics one could review on one page was much greater, which lent itself to a less claustrophobic layout. Right now i feel like everything is too boxed in, and everything upon EVERYthing (in terms of topic titles) is in bold which doesn't help matters for a claustrophobic layout. If the horizontal layout was just widened even by a couple centimeters i think it would help matters. I don't know if anybody else finds it irritating that they cannot scroll down the page and find as many topics per page as they used to, but i find it a little irritating, especially if i have to got to the next page of topics for some reason when before i didn't have to. For forums such as the "Guitars, Amps, and Effects" forum, there tend to be many new topics every day, especially if one only tends to check in once a day, or every other day even. For members that are not as addicted as others (i may vouch for myself that i am an addicted member - but i don't always come on multiple times a day), it might be troublesome to know if there more topics new than that first page can specifically fit. Now, some people might like fewer topics on one page, so i suggest that forum members can choose how many topics they want to fit per page (20, 25, 30, 35, 40, etc.). I don't know if anybody else would like this, but again this is just nitpicking. Thanks for all the changes you have made already Ol!

More nitpicking:
Didn't there used to be a sticky explaining how to get approved for posting in Seconds Out? I can't find it anywhere.
-
First question is (and i know i am probably a stupid git for asking), what is the quick reply feature and has it been taken away?
Quick Reply is same as its allways been - You just need to activate it from your settings in your profile.

The one thing that's bugging me is when I switch from my work computer to my home PC the "Show unread posts since last visit" link doesn't work properly - it says there are none. Then if I click "try all unread posts instead" I see them all.
Can that be fixed? Or can we have "all unread posts" as a link at the top of the page in case someone posts as I log in and I get one unread post and no way to see the others (as has just happened!)
-
I really do not like the new forum code...
Every time i try to login from the main forum page i get an error.. and have to go back and do it again.. The colour scheme is well.. vile and the way that everything is noted as being new is just annoying... i miss the old forum!
-
One thing that is slightly annoying is that if you see the yellow block telling you there's new posts in a certain forum, and then you go in and read them when you press 'back' to go back to the main page after they've been read, it doesn't reload and you have to refresh to see which forums actually contain new posts.

Indy try clicking the Bare Knuckle logo at the top instead of using the 'Back' button.
-
I use the home button after reading a thread.

The thing keeps logging me out and i say "keep me logged in." Its driving me crazy. The old site kept me logged in for EONS. Is there something in my profile settings i should do?

Do you use a bookmark to get to the forum page? If so, change it to go to "http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php" rather than whatever it was going to before. That worked for me.

Have you got your PC to clear down cookies? That's the usual cause of that behaviour...
-
I have a Mac. I use a bookmark to get to the main BKP website but then i just go to the forum manually from there.
-
Try flushing any caches as I have seen windows machines & macs.
I also get similar problems when I'm forced to use proxy servers (though this revision of the board has been great so far)
-
I noticed that when I load pictures they are loading as thumbnails, and then if I am not logged in, they don't show. Is there an option to load them as full size? Also they don't show on preview.

Bingo - Worked perfectly for me.
-
Woah, been away for a while .... this is a surprise :o
-
Welcome back!
We've all had a sex change too.
You must do the same. forum rules.
-
Cheers dude.
Looks like I beat you to it anyway, AgnesYoung01 here 8)
-
Have anybody problem to open the web site?
Don't know why, I could not open the forum nor the BKP site for 3 days...

flushing caches? How would i go about doing that?

So who else is totally used to the forum now? I dont even care how it looks any more, its fine and quick reply is so handy :) It still signs me out each time I leave the page (both in the latest upgrade on FF2 and in FF3) but seems to automatically sign me in when I visit a subforum. Kinda annoying.
-
Yeah I'm used to it and I get no problems so far. The only thing I miss is the area that gave people's location in each post.
-
One problem:
Logging in.
The site always says my password is incorrect. Sometimes I have to click the log on button 3 times before I can get in.
-
Yeah I'm totally used to it and it's functioning perfectly over here :D Love the new quick reply aswell
-
I still don't like the fact that it rolls around on the threads when you have read all the new ones, instaed of saying 'no new threads exist' and a couple of times it has logged me off when I was writing a long reply, and then deletes the reply when you log back in, rather than keeping it.
Plus there is a problem with some images missing when you are just browsing (without being logged in).
-
Actually, I've come to the decision that this system is much better.
Before, I had to press "post" a good 25 plus times just for one comment... that was frustrating.
-
Liking the new forum now.
Totally used to it.
-
so is there any word on the sign in/sign out problems, i guess it is not just me. :?
EDIT: why do all the posts still say new on them? Even going back pages upon pages they all say new.
-
I'm loving it :)
Only one small problem - I seem to be posting A LOT MORE now...
It's ok now, I'm at home, but sooner or later (when at work) I'm gonna have to do some, er, work!!
-
Loads of people are still reporting problems that have been addressed previously in the thread. Read back people!
