Title: Vintage Goodmans speaker.
Post by: SG Thrasher on July 06, 2008, 11:32:40 PM
Hey guys, I've got an old Goodmans 12 inch speaker I pulled out of a 2x12 I got for free and I've been told they were used in the first AC30's and I'm pretty sure it's from the 60's. The magnet is HUGE and it's really heavy. I'm just wondering if any of you can shed some light on it and possibly tell me what it's worth?
It's in good nick and when I fired the cab up it worked fine.

Any info on the speaker on the right of the first picture would also be appreciated.

Thanks.
Baz.

When I worked at JSG in the 70's we used to use Goodmans in our cabs.  I think this is a ceramic magnet, the alnico ones have 'Axiom' on them.  If it is ceramic, they were 50 watt speakers (rather than the 25 of Celestion).  We used to like the sound of them, as they were smoother than Celestions and could handle more power.  They were often used in Selmer and Wem cabinets, and I believe Laney also used to use them.

Thanks Phil, finding info on these speakers is proving to be a tough job.

I used to have a quad of these in my Marshall 4x12, lovely sounding speakers until some utter tw@t from one of the other two bands we shared rehearsal space with cranked the shite out of them and blew three of them.

From their fairly quick demise at the hands of a 100w Marshall, it'd say they were 25w max and no more, maybe even less.  They reminded me of the earlier 20w G12M Greenback, very creamy tone.

The later Axiom 12P Power Range Goodmans were 50w each and they are smoother/darker than comparable Celestions - had loads of those two, sound great in AC30s.

oh, and they are definately ceramic magnet speakers too - similar size magnet to G12Ms (35oz).

Speaking of Goodmans, I've got a pair of alnico Goodmans with huge magnets and the beefiest frames ever that need reconed.  They were beutiful sounding speakers with a really musical top end compression, before I blew them anyway.  Will get them reconed at some point with a slightly beefier voice coil so they can take higher wattages, hopefully around 50w each like the new Celestion Alnico Golds.
