well, i was messing around this afternoon, just trying out some stuff in Cubase, and i ended up with this wee track. totally rips off Led Zep, but i think with a slight metal sound and ( this might just be me ) AC/DC-ish?
apart from the drums ( man, i really need to get some decent drum samples ) all sounds are from my Epiphone G-310 SG - 7.3k Mule neck, 10.2k Black Dog bridge - DI'd to the computer through a Soundcraft Compact4 mixer, recorded in Cubase, and amp'd using NI Guitar Rig. yes, even the bass
tell me what you think! please forgive the cr@ppiness though, i've only been playing for about nine months :?

Sounds promising - I'd go over the mix balance between guitars and bass, watch you don't overcook the effects like reverb! Also try and check out something like Groove Agent or BFD virtual drummers to get some variation in the drum track.
Keep at it! :)

cheers HJM 8)

i personally actually quite liked the mix...yeah it was a bit bass heavy but it kinda made it sound different to all the usual productions that people tend to do. it made it sound heavier...i dont know-more industrial if you catch my drift. same thing with the excessive reverb and fx, to me it made it sound a little more interesting. i guess its all about what you're aiming for in the first place, though.

Valid point - granted!

hey, cheers Willo! :D
i've been getting more into metal recently, but i've been into Drum'n'Bass for a while now, so between those two influences that would explain the general bass-heavyness of the mix. plus, my favourite band is the Cocteau Twins, who used tons of delay, chorus, reverb and a few others probably for their sound. that's probably influenced me a fair bit without my realising. as far as 'industrial' goes, some of the demo stuff our band's done so far has a bit of a Nine Inch Nails sound to it, or so i''m told, i'm not overly familiar with them.
plus it's not so great trying to mix with headphones

hey you should check out drum kit from hell ( DFH) you can get a copy of it off ebay pretty cheap. Otherwise your looking at around £120.
Its about 2 gigs of samples of the drummer from Meshuggah hitting each tom snare etc in about 20 different ways! Check out Meshuggahs newest album Catch 33 to hear how realistic they are. Im sure you wouldnt tell if i hadnt told you!

I liked the spacey-ness, went well with the riff I think.
Drumkit from Hell is astoundingly good, and since it has so many samples you can use it for pretty much any style and I think there are a few differnt ones out now too.
-
cheers guys. i was looking at that DFH actually, it's definately an option. we were thinking of getting a loan of a drum kit from somebody and playing a few breaks oursleves and sampling them, but then i found a bunch of samples i'd forgotten i had  so we're using them for the now.

Can anyone say Gene Loves Jezabel???!!
That's exactly what this track reminded me of.
Weird, but I liked it.
Definitely non-traditional in its approach.
Well done! Great trashy gain sound!!

man, i really need to get some decent drum samples
Lo! Go forth to http://www.naturalstudio.co.uk/ns_kit7free.html and download the ns_kit7free drum samples. You can really liven up programmed drums with those. (And you can always go whole hog and order the full drum sample pack, which has a truly insane range of drum samples in it :))
