Title: New members!
Post by: MDV on July 09, 2008, 12:37:42 PM
Is it just me or has anyone else noticed an influx of new folk round here? Seems to have been happening for maybe a month now.

Maybe we should have a new member introduction sticky so they dont just have to pile in?

(N.b. It was SOOO hard to write this without saying 'n00bs'......)

Are they real new members or fake accounts presumably set up by some kind of automated system (hacking?)?
If you look at the members list there are often hundreds of randomly generated usernames often registered on the same day and all with a zero posts count.

No, I mean a load of guys floating about with 1 and 2 digit post counts. There seems to be more of them.

The more the merrier, of course, and I'm:

A: Wondering if I'm imagining things
B: Whether or not I'm imagining things, suggesting a new member thread. The gear boards probably the best place, because its the most popular (or maybe pickups because its probably the first place people go).

Any that were not activated got removed which rules out most of the automated ones.

I thought a noob is an anoying person, rather than a new person (newbie)

Both. People assume annoying people are new - Hence the use of the term.

They mean the same thing, but newbie is nicer.

Newbie
Newb
Noob
N00b

Is the, well, I suppose its an etymology of sorts.

Sure they don't mean that all new people are annoying...

I've taken to playing 'Hearts' online as I've been laid up after a shoulder operation - I keep getting kicked out of games because I don't have a rating yet!

It is good to see new people joining and contributing and hopefully they'd have lurked beforehand and will have caught on to the generally good atmosphere and courtesy and of course the banter. I particularly like the new Strat and Tele players-generally a sign of good taste.

Word.

Oh, thats whipersnapper speak for "yes, sir, very much so!" ;)

The occasional miscreant seems to find their way here from Harmony central (probably), but on the whole the new members seem to have fit right in! Long may it continue.

Where is the internet hearts you speak of? I am also playing computering hearts lots to kill time; awaiting job starting, and played hearts a lot within the past year, and love it. I would give you a game! the computer is just so damn predictable
