i suppose the title is quite explanatory ;)
anyway, what do people think of these necks? decent quality? up to squier/epiphone/fender mexico levels?
furthermore, they seem to be routed for a floyd nut... is there some way to fit a normal nut in there?
thanks!

Hard to judge from the pics, but I think they look cheap-ish. Or about what you'd expect for £42.
You could fit one of these nuts:

Beware of trying to go non floyd as the strings don't go in a straight line.
You may be ok as long as you put a pull down bar behind the nut.

Thats a pretty cool nut!
You could just put a floyd nut in there anyway. How much do you care what it looks like? I find that after a floyd nut is locked down it enhaces the resonance of the guitar a bit anyway, and of course they are very stable so it makes good sense. Its just whether you think it'll look odd, I suppose.

Could be a major pain in the arse if you go out of tune though! Unless you have a fine-tuning tailpiece like your Schaller unit.

I suppose it was a bit much to expect detailed replies based on those images, I thought maybe some people had tried them before though.
Nevertheless, those were all really helpful tips, especially about the nut and string angle
Just for the record I'm thinking of fitting one to a Squier strat. I think Squier necks are ok (I've played worse low-end Jacksons), but a bit agricultural, Epi standard would be ok... Don't really want anything worse than Squier standard ;) A bit nicer would be appriciated.

Well I suppose at the price it's almost worth getting just to see what it's like - if it's really horrible you can sell it on unused and only lose a few quid.

Very good point phil! But I think you answered it yourself

The headstock is not pointy enough :P

I'm planning on getting one of these for my Ibanez, and sticking some locking tuners on it - Do you think locking tuners are stable enough to handle a floyd?
-
I suppose it depends how low-friction the nut is (and, I suppose, how aggressive you are with the trem). With locking tuners you've eliminated nearly all the slack in the strings by not having extra winds round the posts, so they should come back into tune pretty accurately so long as they don't stick in the nut.
If I ever get my old Hamer back in working order I'm going to use the Kahler trem and locking Schallers. I never liked the string clamp.

Get your hands on the flip down one. Jon just installed one on mine, and its so much easier.
I have the feeling you may have tried one though? You have tried most things :P

not much use on this guitar neck - see felines post above re headstock shape

  Most guitars maybe, but I'm an ignoramus about amps and pedals! But no, never actually tried one. I'm sure they work well, but I always thought they looked too clunky (and heavy?). In fact I think Kahler should've given up on the behind-the-nut clamp and switched to a Floyd style locking nut, but I wouldn't do that to my old Hamer, it's already had too much butcherry over the last 25 years!
Anyway, I think that length of string between nut and tuner adds something to the tone and feel - not necessarily good or bad. Adrian Belew used to use a Kahler with Sperzel tuners, which seemed a good idea to me.

Not seeming visually clunky, but occasionally knock into the corner while playing.
ooo, Sperzels will hold tune with some soft trem abuse? :).
Actually, not happy, now I am scheming more guitars
