Title: Which Phaser should I get?
Post by: JJretroTONEGOD on July 10, 2008, 12:46:00 AM
I am going to replace my Line 6 Liqua Flange with an analogue phaser pedal as I need something deeper than flange I'm finding.. and also warmer.

True Bypass isn't an issue as I have a Keeley Looper it'll be passing through.

I have narrowed it down to :

EHX nano small stone
MXR Phase 90 74 vintage
Maxon PT-999
Red Witch Moon Phaser
4ms Phaseur Fleur (this one is very strange)

I'd prefer to spend less than £100 plus really like the Phase 90 vintage one, but it would be good to get your opinion. I won't be getting it for a while yet!

I've owned the Moon Phaser and currently own a Small Stone Nano.  They're very different sounding phasers, the moon phaser is more subtle and shimmery while the Small Stone is very much more 'in your face'.  So, it really depends what type of sound you're looking for.

BYOC Phaser (http://www.buildyourownclone.com/phaser.html). A phase 90 clone with true bypass and a depth knob. all the way right it the 'true' mxr sound, but tweakable. i was gonna get one myself before realising i dont like phase.

I wouldn't bother will the full-on vintage MXR unless you REALLY want it.  There's no indicator LED and you pay a lot extra for vintage correctness

I'd have a look at their regular Phase 90 instead, or the EVH Phase 90 (which I have).  Both sound great to me!

I would throw the Pigronix offering into the list http://www.pigtronix.com/products08/ep1.html (http://www.pigtronix.com/products08/ep1.html) as the one I tried sounded excellent.

Personally I'd go for both the Red Witch and Small Stone (as it was said theyre very different sounding beasties).

If you like the sound of the MXR then I's suggest buying a BYOC style kit so you can choose the style of MXR you want.

Apart from that I would also suggest looking at the Ibanez Tone Loc version as it's cheap and sounds better than anything by Boss

MDV : All I can say is that I'm stunned

Not wanting to spam, but I'm selling either an EHX Nano Small Stone or an MXR Phase 90 (both are true bypass).

I'm selling them because I've replaced them with a HBE Psilocybe which I really like.

Check out the effectrode phaser - it's a bit pricey but very top notch. It is reviewed in this months Guitarist mag.

the HBE pedals are really good
I dont have their phaser but I do have a couple of their distortion boxes
I now have the hots for their new flanger based on the old ADA flanger

My vote goes to the BYOC Phaser, i've had it for three years, my version only has 1 knob, its the longest serving pedal on my board and is only about £50.

I have hbe flanger :D earlier this year, me and joel designed the lay out and i requested it to be 78 sad1024 ada flanger clone. awesome pedal i must say and it does paul gilbert trick very well through effect loop.

anyways back to the phaser opic. i have hbe psylocybe phaser, they are very good indeed but it's a bit too pulsy for my liking.  so i always set it to a very slow speed. I'd want to have a go with mxr phse90 reissue or retrosonic clone.

maybe they sounded great to you but I found the vintage one much sweeter and more mellow, the EHX and regular Phase 90 sounded too deep and thick for me, even with the swich engaged on the EVH it wasn't quite vintage enough...

mmh I still don't know what to get...

Anyone know what phaser Jimi Page used back in the day??? aka mid- late Zeppelin stuff.

my fave is the EH Small Stone for it's thick, chewy tone.  the vintage ones are still affordable too.

In the early 70's,i used to love the MXR90 and the EHX Small stone.MXR was classy and mellow (very transparent) and the EHX was thick and more pronounced (phasing).Recently,I bought a new EHX Small stone and was very disappointed.Nothing like the old ones. So,if you can find a good vintage MXR90 AND if you have tried it before and you're happy with the sound:go for it!I would say the same for a Small stone btw !Some time ago,i tried an old analog Ibanez multi-effect (just 4-5 pedals together) and the phasing was the best i have heard since the 70'sMXR and EHX.Most modern phasing have a lot of controls (multi-step etc.) but don't give you the "real" phasing sound.
