Title: The 15 Most Desired Amps.
Post by: UndeadMonkey on July 13, 2008, 12:28:09 AM
Use any criteria you like. No restrictions on price, size, power, options, etc. Which do you believe to be the most desired amps for what ever reasoning? But please do list your reasoning.

Thanks!

15 is indeed a large number!

i'm happy with my JMP50 master volume. if i wanted a new amp maybe i'd go for a splawn or a vintage modern.

These poll threads are really annoying. Why 15? It doesn't promote discussion at all and seems pretty redundant.

Desired by whom? me?  If so, 15 is a silly number - it allows me to list every amp I want plus some I would probably never use (OK, if money/space was no object I might have them lying around "just in case" :)).  In other words, there wouldn't really be a decision to make.  Anyway, here's my attempt at a list (in order):

VHT Ultralead
Engl Savage 120 (which I already have)
Hughes & Kettner Triamp MKII
Engl Invader 100
Diezel VH4
Mesa Rectifier (which I already have, though I'd prefer a dual to my single)
Bogner Uberschall
Peavey 6505
Engl Powerball
Marshall JCM900 SL-X
VHT Deliverance 60
Steavens Poundcake 100
VOX AC30
Fender Twin
Roland Jazz Chorus 120

FWIW, If I had the top 3 in the list I'd probably never look at another amp again...

I'll bite. My list is certainly not exhaustive, and may not even get to 15, but includes all the amps I would lust after if funds allowed.

Orange Rockerverb 50
Orange 40th Anni custom shop (or OR50 if funds were tighter !)
Diezel Einstein
Diezel VH4
Bogner Ecstacy Classic
Mad Professor
1972 Marshall Lead 1987
1968 Marshall Superlead 1959
JCM800 2203
1960's Vox AC30
1970's Hiwatt DR504
Egnater Mod50
Engl Special Edition E670
Axe FX Ultra

Ahhhhhhhhhh.

As the prospect of international rockstardom has passed me by, I'm only really interested in little amps I can use at home, so I can't come up with 15 or even close:

Cornell Plexi 7
Suhr Badger
Fargen Mini-Plex II
Matamp Minimat II
Z-Vex Nano

And if I ever get a hilltop mansion with no neighbours for miles around:

Cornell Plexi 18/20 (or similar)

Nothing with lots of channels or hundreds of knobs like the flight deck of Concorde.  Except maybe a Rivera, I like the way they have a "Fender" channel and a "Marshall" channel - I can get my head round that.

Can't come up with 15, but for me, its:

Fender Supersonic
Fender Prosonic
Vox AC15
Fender Brown era Concert (4x10)
Fender Brown era Super (2x10) - I rented one of these and it was awesome
The Gomez Surfer (a repro of Fender's Blonde Era Dual Showman)
Blonde era Twin Amp

Title: Re: The 15 Most Desired Amps.
Post by: sgmypod on July 13, 2008, 11:17:07 AM
Fender prosonic(you've guessed owned but foolishly sold and would be good live)
70's hiwatt 50 (owned but foolishly sold)
Fender twin (again had one that was a 2 almost 3 channel owned but foolishly sold)

Jtm 45 (would get a Martamp one)
My v6-20 Martamp
Mesa boogie twin rectifier (but only for the gain channels)
Mesa bookie MK can't remember which one was quite an old one but very sweet
Fender bassman 4x10
Matamp gt1...if I had a very, very large space..and no neighbours

thats me done, can't get to 15
Title: Re: The 15 Most Desired Amps.

I cant come up with 15, but these are the ones I can think of at the moment:

Bogner Shiva
Marshall Superlead 1959
Marshall Superbass
Vox AC30
Budda Superdrive
My marshall jcm 800 4104

and my Marshall '84 4104 JCM800
Is there a way to find out what year my marshall is from?

I don't know if I can think of 15 but I'll try.

Gomez El Sodino (hot rodded blonde bassman clone)

Marshall JCM800

Marshall Blues Breaker or JTM45 or a Roccaforte

Mesa Boogie Mk IV

Vox AC30

Fender Super Sonic

Fender Twin Reverb Blackface

Fender Dual Showman (like the ones Dick Dale uses)

Can't think of anymore. I don't think anyone could need anymore either 'cause if you'd have these, you couls summon almost any tone.

ahh...sgmypod thinks of the heralded MArk II C+ Mesa Boogie-it is the holy grail of Mesa amps...very few made in the early 80's(I have two :D)...pure simul class bliss(allows for el-34 and 6L6 simultaneously)
-in America, the MkIIC+ has hit almost mythical status-routinely bringing 3500-5000 for the "real deal"-not bad for an 80's era amp that cost around 1200 new
-also will mention the mammoth Mesa COLISEUM-think John Sykes-I lucked into a MK II C+ Coli(...only 86 made...)-6 power tubes and headroom galore-a request that was made by Keef himself!!(the 80's...arena shows...thanks, Keef!)

Matchless Superchief + matching 4x10 - the best Stones tone I've ever heard
Vox AC30 (non top boost 'treble' model) - not as gainy as the top boost amps but a perfect match with a Tele.
Fender Twin (blackface) - possibly the best clean tone ever and that swampy reverb + tremolo.
Fender Tweed Bassman 4x10 - classic rock & roll tone
Marshall script logo JTM45 - for Angus tone
Marshall JTM45/100 - Small Faces / early Who tone
Marshall JMP 2203 - for all those 70s rock tones
Marshall Bluesbreaker combo (mkII like Clapton used)
Hiwatt DR103 - Live At Leeds tone, oh yeah
Peavey 5150 mkII - masses of gain and a really fat tone
Diezel VH4 - modern hi-gain tone with a surgically tight bass end
Selmer T&B mkI (crocskin) - perfect AC30 meets JTM45 tone
Sound City L100 - like a Hiwatt DR103 mixed with a Marshall 1959
Randall Titan - the loudest amp I've ever played with a deep, deep tight bass
White/Matamp GT100 - ultimate stoner amp when paired with a fuzz box

15?  Wow, that's just mad.  I'll only need a few, along the lines of Heavier Than Hell....

My Martamp JTM45 clone
My Martamp JTM45/100 clone
My heavily modded Laney Klipp
Bogner Shiva
Martamp (Fender clone) Super 2x10 combo
Maybe a Vox AC30 of some description
Mesa/Boogie Rectifier of some sort (Mrs Twinfan loves 'em)

That's about it!

Would that be a Brown era Super or a Tweed era Super or not a circuit clone at all?  If Martin does a Brown era Super (6G4) i'd be very interested

If you can get the schematic for the Brown Super, Martin can build it for you.

I'd have a Tweed Super, like this one on his site:

I'm fairly sure Weber do a kit of that amp - get the bare bones from them and the transformers from Mercury Magnetics for the truest reproduction to the original transformers.  Some Weber speakers would complete the picture.

Mojotone sell repros of the cabs too if you get stuck and you should easily find someone who makes a faceplate repro on ebay.

I have too many amps really, but if I was in the market with unlimited money I would have the following on my shopping list:

Bruno - Pony 50
Splawn - Quickrod
Carr - Mercury
Divided by 13 - FTR 37
Mojave - Coyote
65 Amps - Monterey
Victoria Amps - Regal II
Ceriatone - Plexi 50 Bass
Marshall - Vintage Modern 50 + Full Stack (you have to have a full stack or 2 in your fantasy line up)
Matamp - 1224
Vox - AC30H
Ampeg - B15N
Fender - Blackface Deluxe Reverb
Watkins - Dominator
Selmer Truvoice - Triumph Reverb

The last few are all vintage amps, and other than the Dominator, I have owned them in the past, and sold them on (I still have a blackface deluxe cut down into a head).

15? crikey!

these are in no order, by the way...

engl savage se or se (have the savage se; both are great for a wide range of tones and would be my choice if i could only have one amp)

brunetti xlr-evo
cornford
soldano (only tried the avenger; i assume the slo is even slightly nicer)
bogner ecstacy
cornell
thd flexi 50
mesa roadking
splawn (haven't tried; i'm basing this on soundclips, unfortunately)
diezel
vht

obviously vintage fenders, marshalls, voxes would be cool too... (i'll make those my #12-15)

i'm not sure i need 15 amps, haha. also i've cheated above and not always listed models as I haven't necessarily tried all the models by a certain brand... also, there's a bunch of boutique brands which i've never been able to try... carr, fuchs, /13, mojave etc. etc. etc. and while I'm sure they're great, I can't really say they're on my list without trying them (i make an exception for the splawn, as i play a lot of 80s rock and metal, and it's, from all i hear, aimed at that). :)

Got to hear on of them dominators, cranked and played by a genius blues guitarist..very, very nice...but the guy who owns the shop won't put a price on his great nick one
