Title: Crowther Hotcake Bluesberry Overdrive Pedal
Post by: fbloke on July 17, 2008, 09:54:03 PM
Hello, has anyone tried one of these? I'm looking for something to give a tight low-end growl to the overdrive, almost fuzzy. The reviews and yootoob clips sounded good but it would be great to get the forum opinions. I'm looking for an early Billy Gibbons kind of rumbling crunch. Easy!!

Thanks.

how early we talking? - I always love the tone on Fandango, you can really hear the amps crankin on that record.

I'd personally use a germanium Fuzz Face and keep the volume back a notch on the guitar to tighten up the bass end.  There are some boutique versions of the FF that offer this kind of facility 'built-in' such as the Fulltone 69 with it's pre-gain control.

(edit), actually a RAT would do this tone really well too.  Get an early one with the LM308 opamp, or alternatively buy a LM308 off ebay for a quid or so and mod a new one yourself.

I have a Hotcake, it is about 9 or 10 years old now, but is the standard model.  It sounds good, better than a lot of pedals, but I only use it occasionally (too many pedals!).  I also really only use it to push the front of a valve amp, not to get a sound from it.

Lovepedal says the COT 50 will give you the early Billy Gibbons tone. http://www.lovepedal.com/cot50redbg.htm (http://www.lovepedal.com/cot50redbg.htm)
