Title: New cab.....
Post by: AdamB on July 19, 2008, 05:43:40 PM
So, i think that i might be getting a new cab.

I have at the moment an angled Mesa 4 x 12 with v30's. I love the sound, but believe i can get a slightly better sound from a straight cab. And i want something to match my Egnater head colour wise

I still want v30's, but like i said, i want a straight cab this time. Now the options are  -

Bogner 4 x 12 - which actually looks quite similar to the Egnater, both in font of the logo and you can get it in the same colour, roughly £800

Matamp 4 x 12 - Custom build, and super solid construction, but will look quite a bit different from the head even though i can get the colours the same, roughly £600

Egnater 4 x 12 - Custom build, pretty much exactly the same spec as mesa too. Only thing is, shipping costs is going to be mental. Probably about £800 including delivery

Opinions please! Or other options, i'm all ears :D

Get an Orange 4x12 the best sounding 4x12 by far.  PDT_002

Best I ever heard was a Bogner straight 4x12. It is punchy, tight yet resonant, woody. One day I'll have to get one...

Orange sound good yes, but this is more of a cosmetic thing, so oranges are out of the question sorry

You must be all ears if you can hear the difference between an angled and Straight cab!!

But then again, I am a combo guy  :D

The Bogner 412's are supposedly utterly superb. If you can get one in the colour you want I'd go for Bogner. It's potential % resale value would also probably be the best of the three you mention.

Matamp build quality is good, although make sure that any Matamp cab is to the size that you want. The Bogner and Orange's 4x12 success is a lot down to sheer size. Matamp are a bit reticent at publishing their cab sizes on their website.

As a fourth option, reconsider the Orange 412, and then getting it re-tolexed in your preference colour - might work out cheaper than the Bogner.
All in all it's a tough choice. The truth is that you would probably be pleased with any of those cabs.

Another option is my Martamp 4x12, as seen in Twinfan's avatar.
Identical to the Matamp one, except for the picture frame front. Mine have the standard front.
£520 delivered to Manchester, and a choice of colours, grillcloth and piping.
Feet, castors or skids.
Corners in gold, black, silver or none.

Cheers!  :)

Thanks everyone :D

Having trouble finding a bogner 4x12 on the net at the moment as it all seems to be the line6/bogner stuff

I will look at martamp stuff today, thanks Martin.

Any link for the Zilla Cabs?

^ I remember reading about a couple people complaining about zilla cabs. I was going to get a spare 1x12 but then I bailed out.

I should think Martin / Matamp is the way to go esp given the price and complete choice of covering tolex etc!

Reading some reviews and talking to a mate, is selling me on the orange cab!

Sounds Great have one in, in black too, might have to get it!

What a good company to get stuff re covered in a different colour?

Why buy the Orange to then recover it?????  :?

I'd buy a Matamp or Martamp in the colour you want.  You'll get a cab of the same size and quality!

Another shout for bogner here

I got an Uberkab for my powerball. Because it made all the other cabs I've ever heard sound like sloppy, thin, depthless toys.

Granted I havent heard all that many, but were talking 1960A, 5150-whateverthestockcabis, engl V60, mesa slanted V30 loaded and a couple of others.

Never heard, but would really really like to -

Vader cabs.
VHT Big Bottom (or fat bottom, whatever its called)

I'd be really suprised if they're better (for metal) than the bogner, though.

I've spoken to Jeff this morning and found out what happened.
I was right; he had quoted you the compact 4x12 price by mistake, but having realised this is prepared to honour it, being as we have a 4x12 assembled in the showroom and ready (apart from speakers).
The website and price list are a bit confusing!  :?
So, you've dropped lucky Adam!  8)

Will, I'm going to drop my prices a small amount , with effect from this afternoon, for the 2x12 and 4x12. The 1x12 doesn't have the margin. Buy now please!  :D

Cant fault that. Fantastic config. Tonnes of tight low end, good low extension, clear mids and sharp highs.

2 v30's, 2 hot 100's in an X pattern. Can't wait to try it at proper volumes at practice! I hope i like it, haha!

If not, Jeff said he will just put another 2 v30's in, instead of the hot 100's, legend!

The cream Egnater use is an American only colour apparently, boooo! So i just went for all black, can't go wrong.

Ran it at a proper band practice volume tonight, it sounded mint!!! Couldn't be happier :D

It's an arse it not having wheels, but i'm sure it sounds better not having them

You could always put casters on it then put it on its side for the extra bass you apparently get from not having casters? Or you can get ones that clip on/off I think some mesa cabs have/had them.

Sounds simple, but i never thought of that! Cheers Tom
