I've had two celestion g12h30's and two classic lead 80's in my 4x12 for a while now and I've decided I'm not getting along with the classic lead 80's. I'm after a warmer sounding speaker that breaks up earlier and that sounds good for classic rock such as Free, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin etc... I really like the g12h30's I've got at the moment which are the 70th anniversary ones, so am wondering which speaker to pair with these.
Would the heritage g12h's work well in an x pattern with the 70th anniversary g12h's?
Edit: also would the G12M's work well with the anniversary g12h's and how do they differ in sound to g12h's?

Sounds like you need greenbacks - the sound of 70's rock !
Greenbacks and H30's pair very nicely in a 4x12.

thanks hamfist, I've just been listening to some clips on various websites and the greenbacks do sound perfect for what I want, plus they seem to be going for a decent price on lean-business.co.uk at the moment so I think I'll get some.

G1265s would be nice with G12Hs, the 65s are very bright and edgy, the G12Hs have the low mid crunch.

I have to disagree. My experience of the G12-65 Heritage's is that they are very smooth, almost dark, speakers. Very mid-orientated with tighter bass than a greenback. Greenbacks are noticeably "honkier" and brighter than G12-65's.
Also be aware that G12-65's darken up a lot as they break in, which the standard greenbacks don't do anywhere near so much.

I have a pair of reconed cream-back G12Ms here with 55Hz bass cones that are awesome - reconed by Wembley Loudspeaker with the correct Kurt Muller cones.
The new ones don't use the right cones and thats why they sound cr@p.
I'd get some blown old G12Ms and send them to Wembley Loudspeaker for reconing (ask for the Celestion bass-cone kit), I promise you they will sound fantastic.

Well that just proves we all have different tastes. Personally, I think the current MiC Celestion Greenbacks are pretty tasty speakers.
As I understand it, the standard "classic" Pre-Rola greenback G12M's had 75 Hz cones anyway . Although HTH - I'm sure you are more of an authority on this than me.
Celestion seemed to produce all sorts of combinations of voice coils and cones throughout the 70's. For my tastes, I haven't heard a 55Hz coned speaker (vintage or otherwise) that I liked.

yep, the 75Hz cone was the standard 'lead' offering, but many players favoured the 'bass' speaker with the 55Hz cone.
remember, these are not bass speakers as we know them today - they are perfectly usable for guitar and sound great.

Check out the Scumback speaker site for a lot of information on Celestions. Jim at Scumback has spent a lot of time and money researching the sound of Celestion g-12's. He makes great speakers (well Weber actually maufactures the speakers to his specs).
