Title: hahahahahaha, did anyone see this (leaked e-mails)? It's hilarious, honest.
Post by: dave_mc on July 25, 2008, 10:57:40 PM
This might be old news, but the Times' food critic's rather, er, angry e-mails to subeditors for changing his reviews have been leaked to the press. He's also the guy in that TV food series about eating historically (the supersizers, i think). I saw the article today in the Guardian's G2.

Warning: there is a LOT of swearing in them, so probably not safe for work (though it is just a link to the Guardian newspaper's website, so you might get away with it- but do so at your own risk!). Probably shouldn't be viewed by anyone under the age of 37 either.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/jul/25/pressandpublishing.thetimes (the article explaining the background to this story, and abridged versions of the e-mails)

complete e-mails:

I thought it was funny, anyway.

    Quality!

I wish I could get away with emails like that.  There's something deeply satisfying about typing the 'C' word in an email... :)

FWIW, I loved the supersize programs, partly because I drooled over much of the food they got to eat, partly because I find Giles & that silly lefy bint amusing, but mainly because they obviously had so much FUN making them...

Now, there's a man with MUCH anger in him...

I think that he should take up yoga.  Or chi gung.  Or something...

I'm imagining his voice to be something like Gill Chesterton's (off Frasier).

They were fantastic, I'd happily buy that series on DVD.

As for the emails, they're really funny - but it's hard to imagine actually writing messages like that to someone you have to work with.  I can lose my temper and shout occasionally, but I couldn't write or say anything like that

Makes me think Giles Coren is a bit of an arse in some ways - unless he meant for those emails to be "leaked", which would put a different complexion on the situation.

Somewhat amusing...

I will happily speak to my superiors like that, but it's most unwise to put that sort of language in writing!

I am entirely with him though (as is my wife, reading over my shoulder, also a "writer"). I make my living "writing" user guides, training materials and other sundry sh1tte (as requested) for a company that doesn't know its @rse from its elbow on what constitutes quality information...

Occasionally I manage to get my stuff proofed by other members of staff before it goes out into the great wide world (this is a good thing in principle - quality control is what it ought to be), but the problem is the stupid @rse fekwits do not seem to understand what they are reading, what the subject matter is (more worrying as they're usually the experts), and how to put a feking document together in the first place.

Luckily for me, I am "supreme editor"  I can usually take their suggestions and file them... (my tactic is include any amendment that has no real effect either way, so that I can then argue or ignore the ones I feel strongly about...)

No I'm completely with this "illiterate c*nt"

EDIT: Whether he was right to put it all down in an email is debatable - also a shorter message would have been more effective - but it does mean that I was able to read it all!

It was alright, but didn't do a lot for me.  I think that blue jeans cable vs. monster cable thing was the pwnage of all pwnage.  But then, they are slightly different in situation.   I don't have any problem writing those emails or saying that to someone, but to do the kind of masterwork that the guy over at blue jeans cable produced is a true gift i think.  This Coren guy is an amateur compared to the former, IMO.

OMFG! The last time I laughed this hard was when I sat in a cinema watching the first 25 minutes of "South Park: Bigger Longer Uncut"

Tears of laughter are literally running down my cheeks as I copy/paste this paragraph:
It is revolting. It is ill-conceived, incompetent, indescribably awful. A dish so cruel I weep not only for the animal that died to make it, but also for the mushrooms. Ms Workman said it was inedible but, to be honest, as it sits before me, congealing quietly, I cannot leave it alone but return to it every few minutes with the grim fascination of a toddler mesmerised by a pile of its own faeces, nibbling at it, gurning with revulsion, then nibbling some more. If you’ve ever sniffed your finger after scratching your arse, and then done it again, then this dish may not be entirely wasted on you.

The man is a genius :)

As will I. Goodfellas, no harm to it's owners or staff, is a complete kip, and I would not use it's doorway for emergency micuration, much less pay for a meal there.

The correct word, I believe, is "micturition" - definately something we all have a need for !!

As someone who had their pieces edited INCORRECTLY by the sub-editors, I feel his pain!! Haha.

I had my first stories published last week and the guys edited it all wrong.

Tut tut...!!!! :D

A bit like the 'artist VS A&R guy' situation I imagine!

I saw those emails a little while ago. Personally, I think Mr Coren is being a bit of a c--k. But then I work as a sub editor, so I'm a bit biased. I'm not saying he didn't have a point, but the issue was based around a sketchy joke that a lot of people wouldn't have got anyway, and he could have been less rude about it. If anyone spoke to me like that about work I'd done, no matter how precious the original was, I'd blow my bloody stack.

If Coren saw some of the poorly researched, badly written, badly punctuated, shoddily constructed cr@p that ends up having to be fixed by sub editors in order to prevent the writer from looking like a fool, perhaps he'd be a little more measured.
