Title: The Perfect/Coolest Job
Post by: MrBump on July 26, 2008, 08:14:24 PM
So, with my imminent transition from one D.O.I.B (Dull Old Investment Bank) to another, I got all introspective and started to think about the perfect career/job.

Obviously, most of us on this forum would say professional guitarist?  Hmmm...  but would it just become another job after a while?

Then I got to thinking about Condom Integrity Engineer... (you probably get the idea about that one...)

There's a certain appeal about being a glamour photographer, but I suspect that would get a little "routine" after the first, say, twenty years.

What about a pro footballer in the Premiership?  A career of, what, ten years?  And bucket loads of cash on the way up?

I think that running an indy record lable would be pretty cool, but I'd actually like to make some money.

So there you have it - what's the idea/best/coolest job around?

Mark.

To me, would be: part time custom guitars builder and part time musician... Perhaps tattoo artist as hobby :D
And just for fun: Own a nice pub (but with people to take care of it to you)

a real-ale pub with a good selection of live music and decent home-cooked grub (I'm no slouch in the kitchen).  Of course I would have some nubile students running the place day to day to keep the scenery fresh

Window civil servant.

You have an office with a computer and a window to stare out of. Nobody knows what your function is exactly and you have no work whatsoever. In fact, there's no real reason why you should even go to your office, you could stay at home as well.

A nice Euro job- along the lines of Ratrod's description except you get additional allowances for expenses for when you travel to the West Indies to consider world poverty and what can be done about it before heading for the nearest restaurant on a fact finding mission.

I'm pretty spoilt with my current job - making & repairing guitars all day long.
Just wish I had a much bigger place with a showroom for all my guitars with lots of cool amps there too.

There's a certain appeal about being a glamour photographer, but I suspect that would get a little "routine" after the first, say, twenty years.

Did that for about six months when I was dating an American lady living in LA who had her own adult site at the time.
I prefer my current day job to be honest

Jonathan, you're absolutely right.

I really enjoy working on guitars too. If only I had the skills to make one from scratch and do some the more advanced stuff.

Did you happen to see the custom Dean Psychobilly I made?

I also pinned the bridge of my buddy's Gretsch 6120 SS. And made some new foam pads to raise the pickups.

It can be frustrating work, especially the hollow bodies but I really enjoy it.

neat job on the pins!

its not the weather for guitar building today.. i have just carved a maple neck out and thats about my limit.... i have a bubinga and wenge beast to start carving and contouring this week.  Its usually my favorite part of teh process but they are particularly hard woods and its far to hot to think about that today.. i just glued a headstock veneer on it to give me an excuse to leave it alone for the day    deifnately a day for glueing rather than carving!!

Sounds like a monster...

I'm busy at work; but, on a day like today, my favourite job is working in the cold room. Yay for cold rooms! Then up to the balcony for some sunning at tea time.

80 degrees and 90% humidity.

I can't get nothing done and my brain shuts down.

Here's the whole tutorial (with pics) I made about pinning a floating bridge: http://gretschpages.com/forum/general-tech-questions/diy-how-to-pin-a-bridge/10808/page1/ (http://gretschpages.com/forum/general-tech-questions/diy-how-to-pin-a-bridge/10808/page1/)

I hear ya on that one.  Been trying to work at home the last few days and it's really hard to keep the flow going.  Might have to go into the office.  It may smell a little funky, but at least it has air con.
