So I'm looking to get the pickups for my new 80's Super Strat. I'm playing stuff like Dio, Maiden, Priest, VH, and so on... it looks like the HolyDiver is sexactly what I want. I'm excited!
The guitar is a Birdseye Maple Neck Bolt-On, with a Alder Body and Flamed Maple top. I think it's going to be brighter than your average super Strat.
Do you think this is the right direction?
Or should I put in a Warpig, and dial back the tone knob when necessary? Would that be overkill for a bolt-on like mine?
I've got DiMarzio Evolutions in now... how would those compare to the pickups I just mentioned?
And is there any way I can avoid paying the 17.5% VAT, since I live in the USA? (Or I'm willing to buy this pickup from someone).
(You won't believe how affordable it was)

I don't know , maybe a miracle man or a cold sweat. I am loving the Sweat I have in the neck for any Dave murray excursions and it is really just superb for everything. I have a nailbomb in the bridge, and that would be too bright in your guitar, I'm pretty sure. Mine's mahogany, and it is still kinda bright-middy i live in U>S and, no, you can SUBTRACT the VAT if you order from Tim direct, which I recommend, so you can have him wind it Special for you

off topic, what guitar is that please?

When you order direct and give the destination as the USA, the order system subtracts the 17.5% VAT for you.

Holy Divers would be my choice for that guitar.
-
..is it a Suhr?

It's a Carvin Countour C66 :) Totally custom, and I got it basically new for a steal from someone else. The playability is incredible.
Fro the type of music I'll be playing with this guitar, I don't need overwhelming, crushing distortion. But I do like rich, harmonic lead tone. Will the HolyDiver give me that?

Just to add: In this pic is a Flamed Maple top, not a Quilted...

Haha, you're right ... I zoned out typing this ;p

I like the "natural pose" of the guitar in the undergrowth :)

(The pics are from the guy I bought them from.... there's no forest within 10 miles of me, I'm an urbanite).
*whispering British/Australian narrator* Unseen by it's prey, the Carvin Countour 66 crouches motionlessly in the foliage. This guitar has been known to eat over 2 times its own weight in one sitting, which it will then digest over a series of totally wicked solos.

Ahha, you refer, of course, to the inelegant slug-like beast, the telecaster. Incidentally, one of the guitarists at a gig on Saturday in Oxford had one. He looked like a complete *** jockey as a result, which is a shame, because the band were pretty good. Thankfully, you couldn't often hear the guitar - because when you could, it was HORRIBLE!!
But I digress.

My requirements were very similar to yours in terms of the sound I was looking for; rich and harmonic but also capable of plenty distortion if required. I use Cold Sweats for both neck and bridge but I think for the wood in your guitar a Holy Diver might be a better option for the bridge.

in my mahogany Les Paul copy, the Cold Sweat sounded closer to early Dio, Maiden and Priest cause it's got the ceramic thing + the 80's mojo (and almost every hard/metal band used dimarizo super distortion or seymour duncan distortion, as there wasn't a lot of options)
but the Holy Diver is a better all rounder and will make your guitar sound a lot thicker
this difference is very noticeable on the lead tones
I think the cold sweat might be too sharp and bright for alder + maple top + maple neck + maple fretboard
-
That's a *very* good point :) Thanks for the input!
(Next, we have to figure out what to put on my maple neck + walnut/alder/mahogany trio guitar).

Well, don't know people here in BKP Forum, but of guys I know/have talked agree that body doesn't change THAT MUCH the tone... would be like not more than 10%, something alike...
So I would think about other pickups with different voices, but nothing much trebly... There is enough with maple, even more if it's 25,5" (for my taste, of course there is people who put screaming trebly in a Maple neck AND body guitar (http://216.211.140.132/Smileys/Lots_O_Smileys/doh3.gif))

Yeah, that's an issue for another day.
Looking forward to ordering the Holy Diver pickups. I'm also tossing a brass sustain block on the tremolo :)

I've been playing the guitar for a week now, and it amazes me. The tone cuts through glass.
The pickups are DiMarzio Evoluitions... I give them an 7.5/10. Sharp, awesome attack and it'll be heard live. One thing I really want is a "fatness" if I palm mute higher strings -- think the "Holy Diver" solo, or the intro to "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love". I can get kinda close if I set my Pod to the Marshall Variac (but that amp is kinda muddy feeling). With my tweaked JCM 800 patches, I get about a third of the way there -- searing highs, but too thin feeling when palm muted.
Do you think the Holydiver pickups will help me fatten up what I need, compared to the Revolutions? Or should I look at something else from BK..
Note: I'm going to switch from a Pod XT to a Carvin V3. Might as well use a real tube amp :)
-
I think ANY BKP will achieve what you ask of the palm mutes, tbh. My miracle man is brutal when it comes to palm muting! Having a lot of speakers that can cope well with low end helps, too, though!
