I read somewhere online the other night that ernie ball strings are not supposed to be very good in floyd rose systems cos they stretch too much. Is this true or is the bloke full of it?

Sounds like bollocks to me, If they stretched too much nobody would use them because they would go out of tune all the time.

I don't know about Floyds, but Ernie Ball RPS are the only strings I could ever get to work with a Kahler without breaking after 5 minutes.
If they stretch too much with Floyds, they'd stretch too much on any guitar. And EB would've been out of business decades ago.

It sounds silly at first but I suppose there is some truth in it.
Some brands of strings do seem to need more stretching than others to settle in, and because of the importance of balanced tension between the strings and springs on a floyd rose a very 'stretchy' string would be a pain to tune up and get a decent bridge angle, much more so than a strat type trem and infinitely more annoying than any kind of non-trem guitar.
Whether Ernie Ball's are particularly stretchy I don't know as I haven't used them for quite a while.

I've used EBs with no problems on a Floyd but I found I preferred other brands for a variety of reasons so drifted away from EBs

Whats the RPS? funny, I have never been able to keep EB high E strings on my Kahler, and the occasion that Rotosounds do break, theres a spare !

"RPS" is short for "Reinforced Plain Strings". Basically the top 3 strings have some windings (like the wound strings) around the twisted ends of the strings near the ball-ends. Like you say, the high E was always snapping, and always at the end of the string - but the EB RPS did seem to help.

If I remember right there were a few companies who made reinforced strings for Kahlers in the mid '80s. Kahler even had their own, with black ball-ends and solder (rather than extra windings) on the twists. I bought one set and the high E snapped before the guitar was even in tune. :roll:
