Let me know what you guys think.
I personally really like it, it feels kinda justicey but more progressive with the groove of Load.
According to reviews from the listening party a few months back this is the worst track off the album too.
I cant wait until sept 12th now :D

Do you know when the tour starts? Also, is the tour with Down and The Sword?
-
It sounds like a proper Metallica song.
And the white explorer is back!

Also he has a V made to look exactly the same as his white one from the 80s.
-
It sounds boring. If it were any other band nobody would look twice.

The first show of the tour is leeds fest i think.
Unsure who the other bands are on the non festival shows.
-
If Down and The Sword are supporting they are gonna blow away Metallica
-
Damned work internet!
Wanna listnen!
Though, Woogie, I dont know the sword, but I've seen both down and metallica in the last few years, and metallica crush down live as far as I'm concerned. One of those times was on the stanger tour, too. Down are an overblown pub band, IMO. (Give me Corrosion any time! Down without the boring bits).
-
I dunno man :P although I`ve never been a HUGE Metallica fan. Some Metallica songs like Jump in the fire and Holier than thou are awesome but some of their stuff is shiteee whereas I find Down more consistent. Horses for courses I guess! Down have better vocals and riffs imo. Bury me in smoke and On March the Saints are brutal. COC are awesome too for sure! It would be an awesome gig with those 3 bands though.

Well theres no wrong or right to this, but I stand by my assesment. Plus, hetfield is a WAY better vocalist than anselmo.
-
Terrible!
-
It sounds alright, but its more like the songs from load than any of their older albums imo. I like the short harmonised bit after the solo but the rest sounds abit cr@p tbh. I hope the rest of the album is better than this.
-
I've heard it so many times. "This or that band will totaly blow away Metallica....blahblah"
Many have tried.........and failed miserably.
-
Dont like.

There are lots of thrash bands which simply blow them away though, Testament, and Anthrax come to mind.
-
Yep. Testament, on average, are way better than metallica, and have been for quite some time.
-
I'm not bowled over by it, but at least it's a proper song with a tune (unlike anything on St Anger), James is actually singing again (unlike anything on St Anger) and there's a standard Kirk guitar solo (unlike anything on St Anger).
I didn't much care for the tempo change in the middle though, it's too disjointed, like two different songs. And it goes on a bit.
-
Thought it was ok. Did have kind of a Justice vibe to it, which i've been hoping for seeing as its probably my second favourite Metallica album. Although I have to agree with Philly that it did go on for a bit, and that its a darn sight better than anything that was on St Anger.
Somebody really needs to confiscate Kirks wah pedal though.
-
standard kirk solos are something I, frankly, never missed off stanger.
I will give it that its better than anything off St w**ker, but then, they I cant possibly concieve of how they could have made a worse album.
Ted, if you play Enter sandman backwards it says
"KIRK, PUT DOWN THE WAH
KIRK, PUT DOWN THE WAH"
All the way through.
Happens on stage too.

Amen to that. Has there ever been a worse album? :?
(I mean by a band who have actually made good albums at some point, obviously...)

I watched Testament last night, the guy on the Les Paul shreds it up big time!!
-
Oh and who would win in a fight Phil or James? That proves that Down > Metallica :P

+1
I thought St Anger was so bad it actually offended my ears.

I know most people won't agree with me here, but I actually prefer st anger to load and reload. I'm not saying st anger is a good album or anything as it is actually a pretty cr@p album, but i can stand to listen to it more than load and reload for some reason. :? Lets just hope this new album is as good as their earlier albums.

You might get some agreement I think, because a lot of people hate Load and Reload. Personally I like them a lot - I enjoy the old fashioned, melodic, groove/riff approach and I think both albums have some brilliant songs. There are a few stinkers and a lot of the tracks are too long, but if they'd trimmed the fat they could've had at least one absolutely awesome album.
That was one of the reasons St Anger depressed me so much - they'd been writing some of their best songs (maybe in a slightly stodgy "mature" way that alienated a few metalheads, I accept...). But they threw it all away and recorded an hour of badly-produced, repetitive, unimaginative, directionless, boring riffs without a song in sight.

The snare in St Anger is horrid

I thought it was an old Quality Street tin with some nuts and bolts in it.

And the dreams of every Metallica fan who were hoping St Anger would be as they said at the time "Similar to Ride the Lightning".

Y'mean Alex Skolnick? The guy is an awesome player - one of my favourite guitarists, and certainly the metal player whose style I'd most like to get close to.
As for the Metallica clip - leaving aside the sound quality, which can't be helped, the song was ok but nothing spectacular IMO. It had a decent enough groove, but Hammett seriously needs to put the wah pedal away.
I'll probably check the album out when it appears, but not without having heard at least half the songs - I bought St Anger unheard and I'm dammned if I'm getting screwed like that again!
-

Yeah!
-
I actually like that. A whole lot better than I expected Metallica to be. But we'll see. It's not something that makes me go "wow".
-
To be honest it sounds a bit un-inspired to me. It sounds as though they have lost what they used to have and are now using some formula to create passable songs. Shame really as I love Metallica :(
-
As i said in the original post according to Mciver (the british critic who went to the listening party) this is one of the worst songs out of the 6 that he heard from the album.
Personally im waiting for the instrumental thats on it.
-
We'll have to wait for the full album for a proper judging, I think.
I was bored with St. Anger quite quickly. It sounded like an album full of half finished concept songs. Just some drop tune riffs pasted together and yes, that snare drum is terrible.

Thats what it was basically :S
The snare sound wouldnt have been so bad if it wasnt Mic'd how it was. Other bands have used snares with the snares taken off with a pingy sound to great effect metallica just did it VERY wrong.
I find it amusing that Lars has the two snare sounds that are instantly recognisable when you hear them, shame theyre at opposite ends of the spectrum of quality.

Not great, not cr@p. But there's plenty of bands in the underground doing stuff a million times better than this with less than a millionth of the fame. Meh.
