Title: Neck profiling
Post by: Ian Price on August 11, 2008, 01:20:54 PM
I'm sure some people on here must have had this done. What I'm looking for is a rough price. It would be to take a wide fat neck down to wide thin or Strat '57 size/shape. Cheers!

I have no idea, sorry, but I expect the neck finish is important information (ie, an unfinished neck would be cheaper than one that would need to be stripped and refinished, etc).

I didn't realise that I would cause such uproar! I don't see the problem with it to be honest - I like the wide fat and wide think necks but am sooo used to my '57 reissue that anything else just doesn't feel right!

If its not right, get it modded! Dont matter what names on the headstock (unless you can sell it stock for a small fortune unmodded and get a guitar you actually do like built)

You will knock a whole chunk of re-sale off the value of the guitar - something to be aware of.  If you'd prefer a wide thin or regular necked PRS, I'd sell the one you have and buy one with the right neck profile.  I'd also make sure you get someone VERY experienced to do it if you go ahead.  You don't want to ruin the entire guitar, plus the neck will need to be refinished afterwards.  It's not a small job.

Other than that, you've got my full support!

Cheers Twinfan - I can sleep well now! I've kind of got over my whole reselling of guitars thing now and haven't sold one on for years - I think it's because I always used to buy relatively cheap guitars that I didn't have any emotional attachment to. Now I have my strat with BKPs that will never be sold, my Tele that was made in the year I was born that will never be sold and a PRS that will never be sold!

The guy who would be doing it is Gordon Wells of Knight guitars - he is pretty handy so I can't see it being a problem!

One final thing - you said if I would prefer a wide-thin or regular necked PRS. I thought they only did wide-fat or wide-thin. I assume I am completely wrong on this!

Yep, youre wrong!

They do a 'regular' profile on some models which is similar to the wide fat, but the nut width is a bit smaller.

Just to add to that (for the sake of being pedantic  ) the Regular profile is only available on certain 24-fret models - the Custom 24, Standard 24 and Mira (I think).

So those models come with Wide Thin or Regular, they don't have a Wide Fat option.

I wouldn't expect anything less Philly. It's one of those qualities that makes you "you"

You are right to think that - no nastiness intended. I do appreciate good attention to detail!
