Title: MQ neck / Warpig Bridge in SG Standard
Post by: everton_fc on August 14, 2008, 10:10:51 AM
Hi - anyone using a MQ neck and Warpig bridge combo in a Gibson SG Standard?

If so, can you let me know your thoughts? Style of music you play, tone produced - trebly, middy? etc

Thanks!

Having played SGs, and those pickups, I would say it would sound as fat as fat lass eating a lard burger.....

I have the Warpig and MQ in an Explorer and they sound great.  The MQ balances really well with the Warpig.  I have a series/parallel switch on the Warpig too, and that combination works really well for cleaner tones.  Since my Explorer is a mahogany one, I would expect that the sound in an SG will be similar, but a little brighter due to there being less mass.  It will probably give you all the Tony Iommi sounds from early Sabbath.

Nice. Very Nice. Electric Funeral!

Just out of curiosity, which BKP humbucker would have good bass & lower mids in an SG?

I have a Miracle Man in my SG standard in the bridge and I am very happy with it. Tonally a large improvement over the original pickup, even clean (ironically).
I haven't played any other Bareknuckle, so I cannot compare it to other models, but I would say the Miracle Man has a bit more bottom than the original Gibson 498T. The treble end is quite a bit more organic and articulate.

Thanks. Warpig sounds good to me. Just wanted clarify that before spending the cashish. Can you get a Warpig without distressed covers, ie : normal Chrome covers etc?

You can get it how you want I think!

Just to confirm, the Warpig will have a TON of low end and mids in your SG.  The one I had in my LP Junior style guitar did  :)

I've had a Warpig in the bridge of my SG for several months now and it still stuns me every time I play it just how amazing it sounds. For that classic Iomi tone it cant be beat.

I've considered this combo before. My question is if the pick-ups are balanced enough for each other....would the WP overpower the MQ volume-wise?

Nope ACK, the MQs are seriously beefy. The DC resistance is a bit of a misnomer, as the p90 construction is pretty high output compared to other pickups, like humbuckers.

The warpig sounds cool in a SG, what would the stock warpig neck sound like though? not much is said about it, anyone have one?

I have a Mira with a Warpig set.  While it's not an SG it's as close to being an SG without actually being one.  The Warpig neck is just what you would expect.  It matches the WP bridge volume perfectly and has the same full bodied low mid grunt, but with that warmer neck pickup touch.  It's definitely on the "modern" side and has just enough give to keep it from feeling stiff.  It can scream for leads, but honestly I'm one of those that plays leads on the bridge anyway.  It splits wonderfully, but I wouldn't say it sounds like a single coil; sounds more like a lower output humbucker, but a darn good one, especially playing clean.  It's just compressed enough so it keeps everything nice and even; It gets that perfect modern clean tone, if you know what I mean by that.  You can do really cool finger picking stuff and it keeps it together perfectly.  I understand why some of the jazz guys would dig these.  If you were going for more vintagey sounds, especially vintage clean, from a neck pickup you'd probably be happiest with something else.  It's a killer neck, just depends on what you want.

I've got the Warpig and MQ in a Schecter, (string through bridge) It's tuned down to a B with 13's at the moment and its pure liver mangeling evilness! In C i use it for playing SOAD stuff and it nails the tone really well.

I asked Tim to wind the MQ to match the C-Pig and they complement each other amazingly, no issues volume-wise at all.

MQ neck; War Pig in the bridge. The MQ can get a bit noisey but it is a great combo, this combo was recommended to me by Phil King and Tim Mills. Two outstanding musicians with complete knowledge of BK's.

I have this in my SG.

It was also recommended to me by Tim.

This is a match made in heaven in terms of BKP's.

I have it in my SG its really really heavy. My doom guitar.

Poorly recorded and played clip below....

So after stairing at my Epi SG for several months trying to figure out what to put in the neck to compliment the Warpig in the bridge I finally decided the MQ was the pup for me.
After talking to Tim this morning I stuck my order in, :D I'll let you know my impressions next week.

Well after not being able to put this guitar down for over a week I can say I'm sold on this combination and would highly recomend it to anyone.
The driven tones of the MQ are probably as you'd expect clear deep full voiced and never undefined when combined with the WP a pleasing bell like tone comes out of the Celestions I wasnt expecting to noodle about to old Genesis solos with this combination but I can now.
What has really bowled me over are the clean tones the MQ nocks out playing little wing on the SG is a delight.
So I really canot fault the MQ and as far as I'm concearned these pups compliment each other briliantly my SG as gone from an occasional player to a guitar which constantly demands to be played.

I played my guitar teacher's SG on Monday, and I was really impressed. There's just something about them that's... raw... y'know? I can only imagine it with BKPs :D
