The thought occured to me in another thread that I've actually named most of my guitars, or my wife has. Our cars usually get named too, as do those of a mate of mine. Does anyone else do the same?
Here are my names for your amusement:
Guitars
Gordon Smith SG-1 - "Dalhousie"
(named after the castle I got married in as it was my wedding present from Mrs Twinfan)
Jackson Dinky - "Jacko"
(an obvious one, plus it was my nickname at school)
Epiphone '65 reissue SG - "Angus"
(another obvious one, it's my YC/DC gigging guitar)
Gibson Les Paul Junior Lite - "Brownie"
(err, it's brown)
Squier Strat - "Rocky II"
(Mrs Twinfan had a black Squier called Rocky when she was younger and trying to learn to play which is now owned by her brother. I have the sequel!)
PRS Mira - "Caramel"
(named by Mrs Twinfan as it's the colour of caramel)
PRS McCarty Korina #1 - "Fudge"
(you guessed it, named by Mrs Twinfan as it's the colour of fudge!)
Kramer Baretta - "Richie"
(named after Richie Sambora as Mrs Twinfan is a HUGE fan of his and he liked his white Kramers back in the day)
PRS McCarty Korina #2 - "Sam"
(named after one of my Grandads who left me some money in his will which I spent on guitar stuff)
Fender Heavy Relic Telecaster - "Ruby Tuesday"
(named by Mrs Twinfan as it's sparkling red like a ruby, and a bit Keef!)
Amps
Martamp M45 - "Number 7"
(it's Martamp serial number 7, simple as that!)
Martamp M45/100 - "Bob"
(named after my other Grandad, it was ordered just after he died)
Martamp prototype - "Vishnu" - (on order/build in progress)
(named by myself and Martin as Vishnu is the Hindu Supreme God, believed by some to be superior to Shiva ;) )

  :)
My ex-bandmates used to name my guitars for convenience when loading/unloading/setting up e.t.c.
'Blackie' for the black melody maker.
'Green Goblin' for a metallic green ESP.
Not very imaginative!
-
Some of them are named, some not...
Les Paul - Urd. (Character in Ah! My Goddess.)
Vintage AV3 - Ritsuko (Character in Evangelion)
SG Goddess - Belldandy (Character in Ah! My Goddess.)
SG Supreme - Panther (Character in Saber Marionette J)
... actually, it's the one's with BKPs that are named...
-
I suppose my guitars do have names, but they tend to be descriptive based on the guitar itself like 'the red one', 'the les paul', 'the sg', 'the hamer' etc etc
i tried to name a couple of my guitars with a proper name, for example i wanted to call the feline 'number 7', but it just ends up being called 'the feline' ;)
-
mine get descriptive names more than anything but its model names i have fun with... i sometimes let customers come up with model names if they have had a hand in the design of a new model - albeit with a veto for when they suggest things like ' The Venables Violator' ;) sounds too painfull to me!!
-
Can I ask what the prototype is going to be like?
-
SG - Used to be called Detune..as used to be a bitch to keep intune(trussrod wasn't tightened..sorted a while ago)
-
No... its not happening, plenty of other good names without worrying me
-
Can I ask what the prototype is going to be like?
It's going to be very nice, nicer than a Shiva is the plan ;)
-
mmm intriguing...got to love his amps
-
I do. But it's a long process, and I take it very seriously.
Les Paul - "Lal" (Hindi for "Beloved" and also named after my girlfriend. I'll always love her, just like I'll always love this guitar. Yes, I know I'm a hopeless romantic, no one loves one guitar all his life, right?)
12-string - "Judith Marie" (when I got my copy of 10,000 Days, it had a sticker on the front. I stuck that on the guitar. Further explanation lies in the lyrics to the title track of this album)
Spanish nylon string - "Lady D'Arbanville" (named after the Cat Stevens song)
7 string currently unnamed and just refered to as "The 7 string" or "The simi-hollow". Formerly named "Ildri" being an old norse name for fire (it's fire coloured..), and it looks cool written, but I didn't like how it sounded and everyone would pronounce it wrong. I'll think of something eventually, this guitar really deserves a name.
Twinfan, I like the way you name your guitars. Cool thread idea too. :D
-
Mine are called The Epiphone and The Pearl  I dont have a good imagination and it seems stupid naming an inanimate object.
-
Mine are called Ugly Bob, and Clint.
-
Can't say that I ever name anything.
In fact, my eldest son was 3 before we gave hime a name...
-
i tried naming guitars years ago, but it felt contrived and they never stuck, i think it just has to sort of happen. and then i got my 1975 Les Paul deluxe. i was born in 1975, and my parents were going to call me Philip, but didn't. so, the Les Paul's called Phil 8)
-
Mine are called The Epiphone and The Pearl
yeah, that's what it's like with mine too, i just call them by the brand... EDIT: or sometimes the model, if i were going to play my edwards i might say i was going to play the les paul, or with my tokai, might say i was going to play the strat. :)
-
Well since mine are both Les Pauls it makes sense to use the brand name :P
-
I like your LP name blue - superb! :)
-

haha, touche! :)
-
I named the black & gold Eclipse "Goldie".
-
No, no names. Just "the green SG-X" and similar, as others have said.
My dad used to call our old Ford Cortina "Gertie". Maybe I should give my guitars really dull names like Colin and Reg.
-
My amp has been christened the Tiny Toaster. Gotta love tiny terrors.
Oh and my car is called Boris. No reason, first name that came to mind. I recently got a snail for our fish tank, it needs a name... Something asexual as the blighter is a hermaphrodite.
-

Gertie  My mate has really typical predictable and cheesy names for his guitars. The LP is called Paula, his Ibanez Izzie and the Fender he used to have was Florence

It strikes me that the Orange Tiny Terror was exactly the sort of thing Nigel Tufnel needed that time backstage in Boston...
Perhaps you could call the snail James-May as it's a collection of both a male and female name making it a hermaphrodite itself.
I call my Maverick 'The Mongrel' as its a mish-mash of various Maverick models and with replacement pups.
-
Mine are:
main Strat is named Mathew after the guy I bought it from
Tele is Mexican and I have referred to it as Conchita
Blue Strat is very cleverly named "Bluey"
My Precision bass is rather cunningly called "Pressie"
-
Jackson KE-3 - 'Tito'
Gibson Explorer - 'the Beast'. I love this guitar. I sold it, and bought it back. It just does everything for me, its been dropped, thrown about and the wiring needs redoing and it needs a new birdge but I LOVE IT!!!
Epiphone SG Custom - 'the Viking Skull guitar' this is still in pieces but I vow to get it fixed up when I have some spare change. I got it given to me for my 20th birthday from Darren (ex Viking Skull guitarist/ex Raging Speedhorn bassist) who is a good mate of mine.
Marshall JCM800 - 'The King'. Named after Elvis, it wipes the floor with any of my mates amps (or so I like to think) and I couldnt ask for a more versitile amp.
LAG Acoustic - 'Coustic' coz I'm lazy.

My Tanglewood Acoustic is called woody, 'cos I love Ron Wood...yeah I know lame excuse
Amps
Hitw@tt head is called ten ton ted

I can't call it James May, the little snail is a fast bugger! Literally whizzes around the tank. Back to the drawing board.

Murray the Mollusc?
Shelley...?
These names aren't up to much, sorry, Mark.
-
I'm just as bad. I want to name my first born Brick. My girlfriend is coming round to the idea though...
-
No
-
Never been into naming inanimate objects myself. I don't have the imagination required... :stupid:
-
Great thread TF - I was thinking of asking the same, especially after you let slip that the new one was Ruby Tuesday the other day. I was a bit worried it was just me!
My original JV Squier Strat got named Arwen back in the early eighties, didn't really name anything else until the last few years.
Edith - my Fiesta Red Japanese 62 re-issue strat. Named after one of the twin girls my wife looks after (she's a nanny). It was joke originally, and also to cheer the real Edith up, but it kinda stuck after a while - if I get another strat, she'll probably have to be called Lois because of this...
Maud - Epi SG. I've had this for years, but after naming Edith, the SG just cried out to be called Maud, so that was it...
Alice - Baja tele. Named after one of my favourite TV presenters  This was a bit contrived at first, but the name has really stuck since putting Blackguards in her the other week.
Hazel - Epi LP. Named after the other one of my favourite TV presenters . This one hasn't stuck, and it's not helped that the guitar is out of favour at the moment and back in the attic...
Ethel - Gibson Explorer. That one popped out of the blue, I think we were looking for "old names" in tune with Edith, ALice, and Maud. But it hasn't quite stuck yet, she still gets called "the explorer"
Bess - or Elizabeth, Bessie... black Tokai Love Rock. Not sure which variation will stick, but Elizabeth I is in my mind... maybe she ought to be called Cate, after all, after one of my fav... etc(!)
Debra - Danelectric 59 re-issue. This hasn't stuck yet - "Dano" seems to be her name most of the time...
I realised while writing all this, that the name seems to stick when I finally come across the "soul of the guitar" - eg, the baja's been "Alice" since I got her in February, but I haven't thought of her as Alice until the last week or so after putting BKPs in, and I really starting loving what she does...
And I think I've just renamed the Tokai to Cate - I just hadn't realised that was the imagary going through my mind, when I look at her, until I wrote the above...
OK, I'm ready for my medication now
-

'Thinking of Maud, you forget everything...'
-
I wonder if Phil King has his named.
-
No - I never think of names other than the model and year for guitars. Nothing to do with how many I have, or anything like that. I just don't name things, never have. Even my cat was called Ginger because he was a ginger tom!
-
I also agree with the not naming idea. I have: Gibson, Epi, Bass, and Acoustic...
I also find that the word 'dog' is a suitable name for the dog.
-
technically my cats are called sid and nancy but they just get called big one and little one!
-
I also find that the word 'dog' is a suitable name for the dog.
I'm with you on that one!! I'm not exactly "anti-animals", but I don't really understand other peoples' need for pets, and I really don't like having animals around me in my living space (even to the extent that I will avoid visiting/staying with people who keep pets).
Unfortunately all animals seem to like me though... and when forced (I have lived with animals in the past) I will be friendly in a "don't invade my space" fashion, and I will always refer to them by their proper designation (eg "Dog") when speaking to them - regardless of what the owner thinks. I found out years ago that this seems the swiftest way to establish a respectful rapport with the animal in question... Using it's "name" or just trying to ignore it always seems to encourage liberty-taking on the animal's part!!
Still that's just me - loads of people get loads of joy out of their and other people's pets, and I wouldn't stop them. I'd rather avoid all that and form deep and lasting relationships with inanimate objects
-
Martamp prototype - "Vishnu" - (on order/build in progress)
(named by myself and Martin as Vishnu is the Hindu Supreme God, believed by some to be superior to Shiva ;) )
Dream on Dave ;o)
Here are my names:
Thes are my guitars that do have names:
Edwards LP Relic Page (VHIIs) - "Mrs. Tokyo"
Epiphone LP Standard (Black Dogs) - "Cowboy" (according to my GF it looks like a Cowboy's guitar)
MusicMan Axis - "Canada" (where I ebayed it from)
Tokai Goldstar '87 50s strat (Apaches) - "David" (it's going to be my Gilmour Relic when I am finished)
PRS SE Singlecut (RebelYells) - "Cowboy II" (ask my GF why)
Edwards 3PU LP Custom - "Whitey" (err ... it's white)
Gibson LP Special (BKP-91/92) - "Dickerchen" (it's got a baseball bat like neck)
Amps:
No names other than "Shiva" and "Budda", as well as "Axe" for the Axe FX, just what they're called.
-
I also find that the word 'dog' is a suitable name for the dog.
hmmm... although, if your dog is female, 'bitch' isn't a good name. :) [Actually, it's worse if your dog is male, but you get the idea...]
-

(named by myself and Martin as Vishnu is the Hindu Supreme God, believed by some to be superior to Shiva ;) )

If it isn't nicer/better than a Shiva, then it isn't finished yet ;)
The "Vishnu" WILL be better than a Shiva...

OK, Hazel Irvine, but who's Alice? Not Alice Beer?
-

Son?
Actually, I base most of my parenting style on Homer Simpson.
We DID name the firstborn pretty early on, although I love to refer to him as "The Boy"...
I'm starting to get in to this naming business. In fact, I'm actually in the proces of (shock horror) BUILDING my own guitar, which I've already christened "The Pig", given that it's looking pretty damn ugly, yet kinda endearning...
:D

Not all of my guitars but these ones were called Frankie and Blondie
-
See? All the cool kids name their guitars.

Yeah, I know what you mean... but juggling it with paying attention to wife and kids (oh, and work...) is bloody difficult.
As soon as I get something worth posting, it'll be up here.
Mark.

Dr Alice Roberts. Although I have to say I can't quite manage to watch her recent "don't die young" series - it was always on when I was trying to eat!!

Ah, I quite like Dr Alice, but that show is indeed a tough watch!
-
The name Alice also has a lot of other resonances for me: Lewis Carroll's Alice, a song I wrote in the early eighties, the Tom Waits song/album, I love the name, etc, etc...
But the original act of naming the Baja was because of her contributions on "Coast" - the character of the guitar in the first few days seemed to fit with her attractive "no-sh1t/flirty/down-to-earth/enthusiastic" on-screen personality. It fits even more now that it's got Blackguards, especially as it has a slightly deeper pitched tone of voice now...
-
General Les, Spanky and the Cat.
(aka Les Paul Studio, Axis Supersport and my Feline Lion)
It's a secret though as people might think I' sad
I talk to them as well
-
No need to name guitars when I only play the one!
My wife and I do name our cars, though. The first car we had, which was hers before I met her, was called Bob (it was a renault clio, and at the time she bought it, vic and bob were on the adverts...).
The current car (also a clio...) is called Henry, following the same reasoning!
All our house plants get names, too, such as George, the peace lilly, and Basil II (Basil I had a long reign but eventually gave up the ghost after we had an extended holiday in Canada...).
Dear God we're sad.
:D
Roo
-
My car (an MG ZS) is called Ollie - the letters on the reg are EOL, so it came from that.
My mate's family's cars are called "The Dawg" (a Golf V6), Mabel (an Audi RS4) and Kylie (a Subaru Impreza WR1). His wife names them all.
Mrs Twinfan decided to compete with her and has called her C2 VTS "Sebastian René DuPont"
-
Some. First guitar, modded to all hell and back, was used in my early days as a test-bed for wirings, practice for guitar techy stuff (like doing a refret on, because I felt like it):
The Gimp.
Dean Z, brazilburst explorer, dean V headstock, chrome BKs:
Hetbag.
My main kick-around guitar, cos its stable, sounds decent, plays well and I dont mind it getting dinged up by drunken fools...you should know its a little green (though mainly black)
The Jolly Green Metal Machine.
My jackson DX1 with WP-ITs
Miss Piggy.
I have several others but no names have made themselves apparent
-
My Gordon Smith is called Dan. This is only so I can say ‘well played Dan’ at the end of a gig and the drummer says ‘thanks, you too’. To which I reply ‘I wasn’t talking to you Dan, I was talking to my guitar’.
My Strat is called Marjorie, for obvious reasons.
-

We don't like to name house plants so that we won't get too attached. We kill quite a lot of them.

So do we! I hesitate to use the term "brown fingers"... but you get the idea. :D
-
I don't really blame you for hesitating to use that term
Pot plants don't really go with your signature though :P
-
I let Mrs Roo deal with those. Rock and Roll.
-
Great thread and some good names. Far nicer than the name for my Gordon Smith Graduate slimline 60 that's called heavy f****r. Weighs an absolute ton.
-
I finally have a guitar with a name - my Baja Tele is called the Badger. Childish I know....
-
Only got two named guitars, both Ibanez NDM1s. The one that still has it's gaffa tape is The Gaffer, the other, that was stripped of it and oiled is The Table. Because it looks like a coffee table... None of the others have names.
-
The one in my hands is called "this one", the other ones are called "the one over there" or "the one upstairs".
-
I don't name my guitars, but if I did, my main weapon of choice would be called "Slaughteraxe - Destroyer of Worlds, Bane of the Living, Master of the Dead, Wielder of the Apocalyptic Fury".
I kinda like it...
-
Mine are called Classic, Mojo, Strat, bass and acoustic.
When I had two strats they were called mexican one and yank one.
I actually find it quite cringeworthy when people name guitars and cars and whatnot. It makes me think of little girls and dolls.

If guitars were like dogs, that would be its kennel/show name. But it's a bit unwieldy, so you could also have a pet name for it - e.g. my brother's dog was officially called "Stockpom Whistling William" ( ) but he was known as "Duke".
So maybe you could have "Slaughteraxe - Destroyer of Worlds, Bane of the Living, Master of the Dead, Wielder of the Apocalyptic Fury"....
... otherwise known as "Kevin".

And claim it's named after Kevin Sharp, who is more metal than the big silly name anyway.
-
Haha! Yeah, good suggestions.
