I'm thinking about another guitar for D standard/drop C stuff, with a modern style non-locking trem, and as I don't really "need" this guitar it's gotta be cheap.
So far my options are
OLP John Petrucci
For: looks good, satin maple neck, locking tuners, I'm a huge Dream Theater fan.
Against: Unsure of quality. The only one locally had sold when I went to try it. I tried one of the (Cheaper) Axis models and the neck was very nice, but the guitar was heavy and I wasn't convinced by the bridge.
Ibanez SAS36FM
For: Nice top, great neck, mahogany set neck, "matches" my other guitars, it's an Ibanez.
Against: The abalone binding etc is a bit too bling. I played an SA the other day and I loverd the neck and feel, but the trem didn't seem to have a whole lot of movement, although I suppose it's set up for tuning stability in the shop. It's more expensive too.
Any thoughts on those two, or any new suggestions?

What sort of ballpark figure were you after spending?
You might be able to afford more than you would think with the arts council 'Take it away' scheme (I think it's paid for by the government and you pay 1/10 of the price as a deposit with further 1/10s over the next nine months. The government still gets its VAT and there is no interest. The maximum value is £2,000 but that's probably a bit out of your budget to pay back I would assume.).
The Ibanez would be a safe option but with said scheme you might be able to do better.

I'm going to suggest this

It looks pretty cool and seems like it'd be a good shredder. Not too much either.

Interesting, I didn't know there was a budget version of that Lynch guitar! The relicing looks a bit fake, but who really cares at the price?

I've been been fairly interested in the GL myself.
Anyone tried one?

I don't know if you guys know him, but a guitarist called Stu Marshall (one of the top shredders in Australia, an ESP endorsee, columnist for Guitarist Australia, and my friend's guitar teacher) has been raving about his new GL-256 recently. He owns an ungodly number of M2s, Ibanez and other shreddy guitars, and I put a lot of stock into what he says.
"For the dosh the best guitar I have laid hands on. If your thinking of a strat then I highly recommend you nail one of these. It does require a bit of setting up ( like most guitars) but the feel is sleek and I am keeping the on board pickups. Nice and versatile. I really recommend one of these if your looking for a workhorse. I have been asked to help out a cover show here in Sydney for a while and I'll be taking it out live as is. "

That GL looks sweeet!
Might pick one up myself if it keeps looking at me like that!

It does look really rather good. I might be tempted if it wasn't for the "Extra Thin U Neck Contour".

Depending on budget - maybe this:
Top of range Gotoh Wilkinson tremolo
Sperzel tuners
Earvana nut
Alder body, maple neck with rosewood board
Dunlop 6100 frets
EMG 85/81 (currently)
Hiscox case
£950 as shown
Would need to be re-setup for D/drop C

Flippin 'ell chaps have I missed something with that ESP?! Looks awful! :?

While I love your Panthers Jonathan (I really liked the black one with purple parts), it hardly qualifies as cheap, now does it?
I really like the GL, although you'd need to take a bit of sandpaper to the edges of the transfers. However, it's not really the vibe I'm after, and it's got a vintage style trem.

Well what's your budget?
Untill recently you could get an H1000 for £500 at GAK, which was an AMAZING deal, but they seem to have sold them all...
Here's what I found on Ebay - Still a bargain..

I think that George Lynch strat would be a great player, sound awesome too. But the relicing looks fake and terrible imo.

The £200-£350 range of the guitars I'd already mentioned.

Sorry - overlooked the OLP on the Petrucci and was thinking of he full spec version , which is in a different price league
-
Washburn N2 is around that sort of price, although it has a locking trem, would that be a deal breaker ben?

+1, $%ing hideous relic job!

I'm really not loving Floyds at the mo, plus I want something I can change the tuning on simply.
