Title: Telecaster neck pickup mounting
Post by: The amazing Phil on April 18, 2005, 08:36:54 PM
I've noticed that some telecasters don't actually have the neck pickup mounted to the pickguard, but they seem to be mounted directly to the body, any idea how this works and which is best?

I seen quite a few with adjustment screws where they're mounted in the pickguard, anyhow, how does mounting them directly to the body work?

They just screw into the wood, direct mounting, supposed to be good for tone in some peoples book, I'm not convinced personally, but perhaps I haven't tried a good example...having said that, works on a tele!

Kind of works in a similar way to the fender bass does- pickup is mopunted directly to the wood - spung via either springs or rubber grommets. the pickguard just sits on top and can be removed without affecting the pickup.
To change the height of this pickup you have to take off the pickguard.
Also this at least allows for some truss rod adjustment - unlike on many old strats (which can be a real pain to adjust due to having to take them apart to tweak the truss rod)

Well I'll be using a 22 fret Warmoth neck so I can adjust the trussrod without removing anything, but will mounting direct mean I need springy foam or something to keep the pickup pushed to the full extent of the screws when I adjust it?

Use the neoprene tubing that comes with BKP singles, you'll need a couple of wood screws to drive into the body, Feline or R2/e will correct me if I'm way off, not got any tele's myself, but that's how the teh ones I've fitted BKPs to were done.
