Title: New Amp
Post by: bucketshred on September 18, 2005, 10:55:24 PM
I really need a new amp, my Ashdown sucks...

I can only really get one after I have got my Jackson SL-3 so if anyone has any suggestions, it'd be greatly appreciated.  Gotta be a head and 4x12

I want the early Racer X Tone, think Fire of Rock by them and you are there :)

Oh yeah, and I can't go much over £400 for a head (even tho Matamps are so very tempting!) and I know that my options are limited but its all I can afford!

Andy!

Try for a Lee Jackson Ampeg - I've spotted them on fleabay for about £400. Also JCM800s/JMP 2203/2204 heads are to be had at that price!

I know where there is a Lee Jackson Ampeg, but it's a 1x12 combo with 6550's and 6x Sovtek 12AX7WC in. It's at http://www.electromusic.co.uk/.

Great shop IMO (I would say that though, I'm always in there!) with a really good range of gear. Bit far from Kettering though unfortunately.

+1 Electro are great!

They've usually got some BKP demo guitars too!

hmm, 400 head will be a fairly cheap halfstack IMO. you'd get better tone if you spent that money on a combo.

Fire of Rock from Technical Difficulties = early Racer X? :/

I'd guess he used a Laney head for that.. I know he was using a Laney head+ 2x12 for the Superheroes album, I think it was the GH100L.  I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same setup for Technical Difficulties though I don't know for definite.

I can't say much for their build quality/reliability myself as I don't own one nor know anyone who does.

i really recommend the laney heads, they score highly in the "bang for the buck" factor. i have a lc30 (smaller tube combo) and in that price range it's hard to beat.

Gilbert also endorses Lee Jackson amps as well as Laney!

That I didn't know.. but looking at the site it looks like he was using them in his Mr Big days, and I'm not really a Mr Big fan.

He did use a Lee Jackson modded marshall for the first two Racer X albums from what I've gathered.

Right, Im completely $%&#ed on what I wanna get, but it has to compete with my other guitarists DSL.

I only need one channel as i plan on getting a HBE Big D anyway, the laneys and marshall are very tempting, shame cabs are a $%&#ing bomb!

I have an old Lee jackson Metaltronix/perfect connection valve preamp going spare, that hasn't been used in years...
it is a 110V version but will run fine with a £20 adapter plug/transformer

Gimme a call if it is of any use

Other than that get a Marshall or an Engl

It's tempting but I've been offered to swap my Ashdown for a JTM60 and Behringer cab...

I've got three plans for now....

1) Swap my ashdown for a custom made 4x12 and Marshall VS8008, then buy Jon's Metaltronix preamp (got any soundclips mate?)...

2) Swap my ashdown for the jtm60 and behringer cab, sell the head and part ex the cab for said custom made 4x12, save for a bit and then buy an 800...

3) Sell my ashdown on fleabay and then buy a half decent combo...

Thing is, I know that all I want is an 800, it's just finding the easiest route there!

If you want a JCM800 then you'll not be happy intil you get one - stick with the Ashdown and  save up!

My only problem is that I am terrified of Ebay.

A few mates of mine have been scammed on it before (for many hundreds of pounds), and I'm adamant that I won't be scammed by anyone on e-bay.

Plus if the amp doesn't work, I'm ferked!

heh, i've bought and sold loads of stuff on ebay, including a JCM 800 and never had a problem ever, in over 3 years & about 40 sales from all over the world.

Its pretty safe if you use your head and some common sense... the only people who get scammed are the ones who jump in and take every auction\person on there at face value! (and yeah stupid\naieve people aswell... no offence to them!).

With 2nd hand stuff you get as much comeback as buying from classifieds or a shop... and alot of ebayers offer returns policies now.

Dont fear the ebayer!

Racer X is ADA MP 1, ive got the intense rock video with gilbert and he seems to like it.
I dunno but how about a 5150? put some good tubes in it and you can get some good sounds, be prepared to buy lots of new tubes tho.
