A local music shop has an old 4x12 marshall cab loaded with greenbacks for £195. Is that a good price?

yes, we have an old 70s basket weave 4x12 atm in my shop at £325

It all depends on what year the cab is & what condition. Ditto for the speakers.
It would be an excellent deal for any 1970's cab in good condition, with original speakers that still all sound nice.
For a battle-scarred 80's cab with replacement greenbacks (that are still all OK), then it's just an acceptable price.

Try her out. if you like it, buy it. if not, don't.
Pretty simple.

Got no heads at the moment and I won't be able to get a good impression with the MG's they have there :P

If it makes an MG sound good, it'll be a keeper !

Woogie, that looks like an old basketweave cab with metal handles. If thats the real deal with vintage Greenbacks, its worth in excess of £1000. Even an empty basketweave Marshall cab would fetch more than £195
If you don't buy it, PM me with the details so I can.

Just mailed them asking if its got a serial number and if the speakers are original.
So I could be in the money here?

The serial number of the cab is actually not that useful. It's the date codes on the speaker frames that are the most reliable method of dating a cab like that.
You also need to assume that they know how to date the speakers - which is unlikely for your "average" guitar shop. If they say all the greenbacks are old and still working, then I'd buy it and consider selling the greenbacks (which will be very tired by now) for a silly sum of money, then buy some quality replacement speakers to replace them.

A good silly sum of money or bad silly sum of money? I have EVM12L's going into my Zilla 4x12 which will be my gigging cab

i would personally risk it and buy that cab if i wanted a 4x12, up to you though :) in worst case you'll at least get your money back on ebay.

Won't make you rich, but could net you a tidy bit of profit. So much depends on the year, and the condition.
Lets just say that I sold a pair of 1978 blackbacks for £120, and those are truly horrible speakers (yes, I know some folks like them). 70's (espec early 70's) greenbacks will be more desireable than blackbacks for sure.
-
I seriously doubt that's an old Marshall cab worth big bucks. Any music shop with half a brain would know they're worth more than £200.....
-
That's what i was thinking...

Not all music shops are clued up, I've had bargains over the years from music shops. The cab in the picture looks like a basketweave cab, once Woogie gets the frame & cone codes we can be sure. If it's a basketweave cab with original speakers, they will be pre-rola greenbacks which in full working condition should fetch at least £100 per speaker - many people pay a premium for a matched set too.
One of my best music shop deals only around 4 years ago was a White/Matamp full stack for £250. The 4x12s had 50w purple-back Fanes and the head was sold as dead because the HT fuse-holder had arced. £0.99 later and a trip to Maplins, the amp was up and running fine complete with the original Mullard ECC83s and EL34s.
I also got a Fender Tonemaster from a shop in Newcastle for £280 because the tolex was scuffed down the side.
Another sold as dead amp for £50 was a Sound City L100. The mains switch was just broken and the amp worked fine once it was replaced.
Got an old Matamp 4x12 with 50w Celestion G12Ms for £100, that was a fantastic cab.
Maybe the shops in Manchester are more clued up. For many shops, an old Marshall 4x12 is just that - old, battered and worth a fraction of a new one.
-
Good points HTH. I can understand people not being clued up on Matamp, slightly obscure Fenders etc but I would have thought most people know an old Marshall is worth good money? Maybe not!
They're certainly more clued up round here as there's a big music scene in South Manchester. Bargains are harder to come by for sure...

We'll see, hopefully they'll email me the info
