Title: BC Rich GAS - Gunslinger Retro (Pics Finally Added)
Post by: Afghan Dave on September 01, 2008, 05:27:10 PM
It's coming up to my birthday and by a cosmically significant coincidence this is being released at the same time!!

http://www.bcrich.com/gunslinger_retro.html (http://www.bcrich.com/gunslinger_retro.html)

I've wanted one of these since I got a catalogue from Livewire Distribution in 1987 (I've slept with girls younger than that catalogue).

How can gift from the gods?

Should I go for it and be able to dance around my room like Paul Stanley?

I'd fight hell to hold her... I could have some crazy nights... Should I do it my way?

Mmm... Everybody's got a reason to live...

I had to read that a few times, wondering if you'd slept with girls younger than... actually that'd be 21 anyway, so not too bad!

On that basis I'm limited to the over-38s.   :(

(Have to say I'm not keen on the guitar...)

They had an old black Gunslinger in my local a month or two ago. All the hardware was rusted up and it still fetched clear of £600.

Ashamed to say I didn't "get" why someone would pay that much for something that looked like it was on its last legs. But then I don't "get" new guitars made to look like old guitars with bits of paint scr@ped off them.  :?

They say you're only as young as the woman you feel, but a woman's ideal age for a man is half his age plus 7 years.  So for Fernando, that would be 23/2 + 7 = 18½.  For Phily I am thinking this would be 44/2+7 = 29 (much better than 38!).  My girlfriend is 31, which means I will have time to grow until she is too old for me!!

Thanks Phil, that's cheered me up.  Although I suspect that "formula" was invented by a man...

Hey Dave, the guitar looks a lot like one I am just putting together for Ben, though I like Mockingbirds a bit more - mine is a Warmoth with a Nailbomb set (though the bridge has 2 sets of screw coils.  Korina body, wenge neck, ebony fingerboard. 5 way gives: bridge series, bridge parallel, bridge series+neck series, neck split, neck series.  6 way is a varitone - different capacitors.  Other pot is for a pre-amp I am toying with to give the real BC Rich experience!

Thanks everyone, I was looking for an original koa mockingbird but they have got very expensive now, and Warmoth had this body in the sale section, so that was it!  I'm still messing with the wiring, but it is sounding really nice.

Loving that Mockingbird dude.

Preparing to have stones hurled at me but I actually quite like the Beast shape, heh. But I'd like to point out that several other B.C Rich shapes make me look away in disgust, namely the Ironbird, Dagger, Stealth, Virgin, Virgo, Warbeast and Zombie. I think they also had one called a Widow or something that looked like some kid had a go at a block of wood with an Axe and they just put a neck and strings on it.

B.C Rich are definitely guilty of some crimes against taste, but some of them are the opposite extreme and make me salivate.  :D

Yeah, love the Mockingbird. :D

I really like the early BC Rich shapes - the Mockingbird, Bich, Eagle (not so sure about the original Seagull).  But then they started doing the more pointy "metal" shapes and I've never been so keen on them - the Warlock is OK but I think the later ones are all pretty ugly.

I do have a bit of a soft spot for the Stealth because Rick Derringer designed it.

I have an original made in USA BC RICH Gunslinger from '88 that has been upgraded and pimped
Seriously good player - slim neck - about 42mm at the nut and 56.5 at the heel
I changed the trem to a new Original Ibanez Edge as the chrome OFR  that I had used for 10 years looked odd as it was the wrong colour. Wicked paint job - the silver flakes all change colour as the light hits them
Guitar has one of the best fret jobs I've ever done (Dunlop 6000)
Will sell it for £799 (+£50 if you want the Hiscox case it lives in)

The other one that has some BC Rich heritage is this baby
It has a USA made BC Rich body from 1990, that I added a great burr veneer to and refinished the guitar
Neck is one of mine..........
It features a Gotoh Floyd and a Double screw coil BKP Miracle Man
Will sell it for £599 (+£50 if you want the Hiscox case it lives in)

^Very nice.
I love the look of gunslingers, the only things that worries me about the new ones is that they're MIK and the nut is 45mm, whereas I'm used too, and get on best with, 41mm.

GAS UPDATE!

OK, I've been searching for these new Gunslingers as if they were the holy grail but to no avail..  :(

Rosetti only had 8 scheduled to arrive in the UK and nobody who has advertised them has or will now be getting them as the Korean production facility has been moved.

Well...

I've got my order in for one of the new batch and am hoping to see it Jan/Feb next year... so much for the logical birthday present idea.  :?

To satiate my GAS in the short term

So that's a little to look forward to...  PDT_015

Nope, they are out there but VERY FEW and mostly in America.

Rosetti are the BC Rich importers in the UK and they simply cannot get them due to the change in production facility.

So... We/I should be seeing one on these shores in Feb 09! :( :?

That's a shame.

BC Rich's UK distribution seems to be almost non-existent anyway.  I haven't looked particularly hard, but I can't think of anywhere that actually sells them, at least not the more upmarket models.

Is there a purpose to the angled pickup, or is it just an aesthetic thing?

As an aside, I've heard of the 'half your age +7 years' thing too, but it was explained to me as 'the youngest a lass can be without it being gross', rather than 'ideal age'.

Yup so long in fact that..

Rosetti Bumped The Price!....

I ordered at 2008 prices but they delivered at 2009...

The store I ordered from "Peter Cooks Guitar World" have been very helpful but there isn't alot that can be done.

This guitar is a thank you gift from my mother for being her carer so I fronted the difference between the expected price and just took it home.

First thoughts.

Well it certainly isn't a disapointment.

The neck is perfect for me, more meat / mass in your hand than a wizard and almost totally flat with a fantastic raw maple feel.

The guitar is very reasonant dispite having a Floyd Rose & for the moment I'm diggin' the (ahem) Dimarzio Super Distortion (ahem).. A Holy Diver will at some point find a home here in the future.

Don't you think for a minute I'm not planning a "Gold Snakeskin" respray!!

Pictures to come...

Flip, that was a long wait (both - for it to arrive, and the hankering after it since the 80s).

Hope the price-hike wasn't too painful. Really glad it's not a disappointment - I remember reading this back last year thinking "I hope it's as good as he's been dreaming of since way back..."

:D

PS Wife want's to know if it's that AWFUL colour  (she has a thing about all things yellow...)

I think the price would have gone up 25% or more
It would have risen 25% alone due to the change in the exchange rate
6 months ago it was $2 to the £1
Now it is $1.4 (at best) to the £1

I'm glad that you got what you wanted after the wait.  I hope you can get as much fun out of it as it looks like it shoud deliver.  I like the way they have worked out the string spread on the reverse headstock do that the pull isn't at an insane angle.  If the neck is anything like my Mockingbird, then it should be really nice to play.

btw.  I like the colour.

I do too - lord knows what'll happen at home here if I ever fall in love with a yellow guitar...

Choice gat bro, always dug the one humbucker super strats, was eyeing one of these up a while ago but the dollar went to far down for my liking.
But yeah Yellow with maple board is a great combo, ive wanted a desert yellow rg550 for ages, had to settle for a laser blue one for cheap instead.
Are they proper OFR's on the gunslinger or has it got the overseas made cheap ones that are getting called OFR's that I've heard talk about?
