Some of this article makes sense, but then I read the summary at the bottom and it just seems like a load of rubbish.
Maybe it just doesn't apply the same to musicians
What do you think?

Not hard working!!!!???
bar-stewards!!
I'm currently commuting to work, where I will pick up a dewar with samples in, travel across London, hop on the train to France, travel across Paris, hop on a train to Grenoble, spend 24 hours between Sat morning and Sun morning solidly collecting data (I hope!), hope back on a train to get back to the office on Sunday late afternoon.
And then I'm off on Thursday to Diamond in Oxfordshire for another 24 hour shift.
And they say we're not hard working?
****s!
-
All I see is lots of "Low/High Self esteem" "Creative" "not hardworking" "Gentle" "at ease"
That's hardly a way to describe people. Hell, if any genre is all the above, then everyone would fit into every genre :s
-
What about if you like lots of different kinds of music?
A lot of those contradict, and you wouldnt think one person could like some at the same time. But they do.
-
You can still take the survey on the website that the story links to, and there's a space at the bottom where you can enter a short description of your level of musical interest/education. I agree that it's pretty vague and self-contradictory.
I'm sure there are broad correlations between someone's personality traits and the types of cultural entertainment they enjoy, but whether they're capable of being neatly compartmentalised into "music taste" is another thing entirely. For a start (using the survey's list of genres) Oasis, the Cure, Babyshambles, Primal Scream, the Durutti Column and the Smiths all fall into the "indie" category; but they hardly have massive similarities in style and lyrical content, so it would be foolish to expect self-identified fans of those bands to have similar personality traits.
-
Sure on the listening to at moment post someone said Vengaboys what does it say about them *L*

agreed. it was pretty cool, until i noticed that several styles i liked (e.g. classical and heavy metal) had some opposites. I must say, though, that i didn't find that people who liked classical and metal were similar, because if you ask me, they're quite similar styles of music (at least the metal i listen to)... a lot of metal is like classical with heavy guitars.

Didn't you all know that if you like Led Zeppelin you are inclined to be interested in the occult?!! PDT_008

It's a study... They gather information, find similarities, and narrow out what falls out of the norm, leaving just a general picture. For what it is, I agree with most of the results.
It also shows that all soul has gone out of blues. High self-esteem is the anti-blues.

Exactly what i was going to say. I love all types of music, but the blues is where it is at for me most, and i have a very low self-esteem lol

Well that fits, I like Led Zepp and I'm rather partial to a spot of Devil Worshiping myself too! PDT_003

Of course it's easy to pick holes in the theory by giving specific examples which don't fit, and of course there are lots of other factors, but generally it seems pretty reasonable to me.
When they reported it on the BBC there were lots of mock-shocked expressions and comments like "Heavy Metal fans? Gentle?" But we all know metal fans in general are not Glen Benton. Most of us are actually pretty geeky and polite, at least in my experience.
They also seemed shocked that Dance music fans are "not gentle", but that also makes sense to me. A lot of clubbers seem to be manic, noisy and in-your-face (when they're in the mood for dancin') - and that, to me, is not gentle.

Ah, we all know Stairway to Heaven is about Mornington Crescent... :)

HEY!
ISIAC is not the occult!! It might have a cult following, but the two are very different!

Well, if you're going to perform a Reverse Canterbury Pleasure, then, according to the Nash convention, you will need to sacrifice Seven Sisters... :)
-
Hahaha superb derailment! :D
-
And I thought that program was only for "old" people!

I have to be honest, I'm completely mystified here.... :?
-
Watch out, then - I'm into the second half of my 24h shift, and these posts are going to become increasingly strange :)

Is this something to do with bell ringing?

Is this something to do with bell ringing?
Yes, but only by coincidence... :)
[Do you watch QI, or are you a bell ringer? :)]
-
Oh, it's QI... I do watch that, if I happen to stumble on it or remember it's on. Don't watch much TV nowadays.
-
Incidentally, I'm still up. Not been to bed since a really poor nights' sleep on Friday before my experiment started. Today I have been mostly travelling back from Grenoble :(
At least for Thursday's 24 hour shift, I can drive there and drive home afterwards (about 20 minutes!) rather than having to get on trains, wait at stations, worry about taking samples through customs etc etc.
The original reference to Mornington Crescent in this thread was itself a reference to I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue (the antidote to panel games), chaired by the late great Humphrey Lyttleton. I've been an avid follower of that radio show for the last 13 or 14 years (and it's been running for many, many more!!).
Particularly pertinent quote from it: "As the Pope says to young mothers: Get some rhythm!" :)

No, it's starting to fall into place! :D

I'm not a regular listener, but I should have got that. But when you said:

(as opposed to ISIHAC) I thought you were talking about the worship of Isis or something! And then I got very lost...
-
Hmmm and that was only half way through my shift... in fact, that was about 24 hours ago from now! Bloody hell :(
Sorry for all the confusion. I'll go to bed just as soon as my bus gets back to Oxford!

It sounds scary doing 24 hour shifts... doesn't involve any risk of physical injury does it?

Oh, and the reason for the Qi reference was that I (somewhat cheekily) threw in a bell-ringing term (Reverse Canterbury Pleasure). It just sounded so much like a Mornington Crescent move when I heard it mentioned on QI. (sorry)

If you count exposure to extremely high energy X-rays, yes. But the chances of that are so slim anyway (for once I'm in favour of the extreme H&S interventions! What you DON'T want at 4 in the morning is to get stuck in the hutch when the shutter opens!).
At least there will be 3 other people on Thursday's trip. Might even get some sleep, woo!
Yay for sleep!

Dance music creative? What's creative about a computer generated mindless beat with a constantly returning and repeating hook in B-flat and lyrics that are nothing more than the title of the song?
People who like that have little self awareness, no creativity, agressive, slightly anti-social and are generally dumb-asses. And most rap music isn't that much different. (Just my humble opinion)
And why isn't rock n' roll added in that list of genres?

It's not really humble though is it? Or based in anything factual.
Do you geniuinely think ALL music that falls under the "dance" banner deserves that review? Have you heard anything other than what appears in the top ten?
-
Stricktly speaking, probably 80% of all music could be described as dance music. Swing, rock n' roll, country, hip hop, techno, mariachi, samba, traditionals, folk etc. etc.
I think it's fair to assume that dance music in this particular case is the music played at clubs.
Sorry, I can be a bit of a hard-ass sometimes.

Then we ge onto what clubs you go to :P
Even taking purely about electronic music made by DJs with the intention of being played in clubs, you'd be a bit of an arse saying Aphex Twin, Shpongle, Ott, Autechre, Younger Brother, The Orb etc haven't ever done anything creative.
