Title: School me on Edwards
Post by: Lew on September 06, 2008, 04:56:57 AM
I want a Lespaul style guitar and I cant afford a Feline Lion or a Hamer.
No time for Gibson studios-"only a Gibson is good enough(to modify and fix)"
I have never tried an Edwards, all I know is its a part of ESP, never heard a bad thing though. How is the wood, fit, finish, electrics etc etc...
Maybe there are other options I'm not aware of.

Cheers

edwards are very good, you should also look at the jap made tokais, maybe a gordon smith.. an esp EC maybe... but they are a little different

Surely now is not the time to be buying an edwards though, with the state of the pound?

Why not a Studio?

If you can find a Signature, they're worth considering. Especially as there's a good chance you'll get it for quite a bit cheaper than an Edwards.

Why not a Studio?

Jest the question I was going to ask. My studio is my number 1 guitar it's stunning (Mind you it is a 1989 non chambered ebony board model)

I've owned five Edwards guitars, I only have two of them left but that's not because I was disappointed with them in any way.

It's hard to comment on the quality of the timber, I'm no expert, but they always seem to use very lightweight mahogany - my LP was only 8 pounds 5 ounces.  My Potbellys both had one-piece bodies, which I wouldn't expect at the price.  I couldn't say what species of mahogany it is, it may be a far eastern equivalent, but it certainly looks and sounds like mahogany!   If it has a flame maple top, the flame will probably be a veneer - but the plain top underneath will be solid maple, of the proper thickness.

Necks tend to be quite fat, roughly a Gibson '59 shape.  Most of the LP models have long tenon neck joints.

The finish is usually some kind of poly, some of the more expensive models have nitro but I've read that it's actually nitro top coats over a poly base (which is what Fender sometimes do as well, apparently).  Anyway, they look great.

Pickups are almost always Seymour Duncan (USA, not "Duncan Designed"), the tuners are usually Gotoh and the bridges/tailpieces are Gotoh or something very similar.  Some models even have TonePros parts (not sure if this applies to any LP models).  The electronics are of the far eastern variety and (IMO) usually need replacing.

Basically, they're very good and worth buying if you can get one for a reasonable price.

I agree that Japanese Tokais are worth considering, and also the Japanese market Epiphones (with the proper Gibson headstock shape), which are absolutely excellent if you can find them.  Of course if you're ready to buy secondhand, there are other Japanese brands like Greco, Burny and Orville by Gibson.

My Japanese made Signature Les Paul is still for sale.  Made in the same place as the Epiphone Elitist guitars.  A bargain at £400, as Sambo will tell you  :)

Nice to see that third picture back again.

I thought you'd sold that guitar ages ago, Dave.

It's up for a commission sale in a local shop, but they've been cr@p at promoting it.  It's stored out the back most of the time

I can get it back if someone wants to buy it  :)

i pretty much agree with what philly said: great apart from electronics, i also heard someone on the japanaxe forum, i think, saying the mahogany was african (khaya, i think?), but that's hearsay and i know next to nothing about timber. Mine has a one-piece back, which is pretty cool for the money. also don't forget about postage, customs etc. charges, and also the fact that the pound's not doing so well at the moment. :)

Cheers loads of info! Thanks for the big write up Philly :D

FWIW most early Fenders were an acrylic base with a nitro top coat, only the early 50s Fenders were all nitro.

r.e Gibson I'm not answering   because I don't want to be responsible for the Caparison mk2 thread

Good point about the dollar, I could get a beaten up Hamer I guess-just have to get over my phobia of used guitars lol hmmm then there's the shiping and tax bah

Not at all.  I'd say it was medium weight.  8.5lbs-ish?

Just coming back to the point about the pound vs. dollar, it has slipped quite badly but it could still get worse!  In any case, it's going to be a looooooonnnng time before we get anywhere near where we were a few months ago.

I reckon if you do want to buy something and it's priced in dollars, it's better to do it sooner rather than later.

But then the Edwards may not offer such good value for money as it did six months ago, and he may wish to explore other avenues.

Absolutely.   I just meant if Lew (or anyone) finds exactly what he wants, and it's in dollars, I don't think there's any point waiting for the price to improve.

actually the pound/dollar rate is more or less what it always has been for the past while(1:2)- one of the few advantages of the dollar performing as badly as the pound, lol (EDIT: just checked and the pound seems to have slipped a little against the dollar- that must be pretty recent  :? :x ). it's the pound versus yen, and pound versus euro, where things seem to have slipped very badly- certainly the euro used to only buy you about 65p, now that's more like 80p (which affects prices on thomann etc.), and when i got my edwards a pound bought you around 240yen, when i checked yesterday on xe, that was down to 190 yen, which is quite a difference! it had actually started to recover a few weeks back, but it seems to have slipped even further again.

another very important point that philly mentioned is that it could get worse- and certainly with ishibashi you normally have to wait a few weeks until they've got one they can send out, and they won't charge you till you get it, so you could end up paying more than you expect. I'd hold off for a while to be honest.

You guys should have joined the EURO years ago, then you could have cheap Edwards too, like we EUROpeans do :O)

Just joking.

I have 2 Edwards, a JP Relic and a white custom 3 PU model.

Actually the white 3PU custom, all stock, has become my favourite guitar at the moment. It doesn't have BKPs, but everything on that guitar just works. It is heavy, but it gives a meaty tone, very nice cleans on the in between and neck positions.

Electronics are cheapo, but on the white one it doesn't bother me at the moment.

I can only recommend Edwards. I suggest to buy from seller yasoomusic on ebay, just search "edwards" on ebay.com and you'll find him.

Or Hisashi (hisashi0731), or Katana Guitars (mijsixstringskatana).  I've bought from all three, and they're excellent - very helpful and honest.

The ill timed comments by Alistair Darling and their catastrophic effect on the pound and the LSE were top of the news and all over the front pages last week.

oh yeah, that. haha, forgot about that. the fact it had been sliding for the best part of the last 8 months or so meant i just assumed it was more of the same...
