Thought this'd be a cool place for all to share their works in progress/dream guitars.
As I said in another thread, I'm currently waiting for my Conklin 8, how about you guys?

I like that LP Junior, Wez...
-
yeah, jonathan and Bob maybe!! Tbh most of these are further along now (some people will be glad to hear)
the one ilyti likes is actually a slow burner i am doing with my cousin to show him how its done. Its fully chamered in the proper way and is just waiting for the top to be carved. The top is spalted maple i really didnt want to use, nath took that as a challenge!!
th Lp junior is old stock mahogany and will be recieving a 62 junior wiring loom and BKP-91 dog ear. the scratchplate in the photo is a DC one but a SC has been ordered.
-
oh, i want to see the conklin!!!

That looks really nice!
-
Very nice ! I like the Les Paul jr . Nice guitars!!!
-
Wez, you need to make another John Birch clone with a maple neck so I can stop holding Phil's hostage!!
-
new one will be in see through black cherry finish and will have a sausage pattern quilt top instead of the bubbly variety like on this one.
I'm also hoping to get a caparison horus but I doubt I will have the cash for it this year or the next. I really wanted the Iris Violet one but sadly my mate Shane at bmusic only has one left in his shop and it's most likely the end of the run as it was for a limited time only :(
-

no rush on that, Phil has enough to share!! I like to keep my output quite varied to keep it fun and i already have another SG on the to do list. My plan for next year is more crazy stuff like finally getting around to doing an 8 string maybe doing a double neck and hopefully moving into proper semi hollow territory as well. i will need a couple of relatively standard guitar builds to keep me sane!!

Tashty!
-
Yep, another vote for the Junior here, Wez :D
-
What happened with the padauk one wez
-
Wez - Do a fanned fret 8 string with a curved and figured top. You know you want too :P
-

erm, i forgot about it. :) last time a saw it a few more coats of black were needed. Nath must still have it
Wez - Do a fanned fret 8 string with a curved and figured top. You know you want too :P
If i do an 8 (which i am going to) it will definately be FF/multiscale. carved top dinky style shape aint a bad idea.. i kind of weant a smaller super strat shape so either dinky's or N4's spring to mind
-
What color is going on the Jr? REALLY like it (there is a owner o it, already? :D)
-
it will have a proper 55 jnr burst, spoken for already

I love the Junior too!

Me in Febuary

did i type 'splat' somewhere? :) i usually do when trying to type 'spalt'.
you mean we have to wait till february to see the conklin!!! not playing fair ;)
-
definitely digging that LP junior, wez. the tele is very cool too (they're all cool, lol).
that's a great esp custom, too.

Haha, no, Chris on here corrected me when I first learn what a spalt was I thought it was called a splat haha.
Well, yes and no, here it is now:
But eventually, minus the gold hardware, single coil and volume knob + piezo 3 way switch + BKs + will be something like this:
-
I have a sort-of-custom on the way. But I'm not telling what it is. When I get it, I'll tell folks, with photies. Not even any of my pals know, or in fact my missus - though she knows how much it costs :P
I'm excited though. I have been waiting on a different custom guitar - a V - for a good two and a half years that a friend was making, a fine luthier, until his full time business got too busy for him to carry on building guitars, I'd bought all the timber and hardware by that point though, which is a nuisance, spoken to Jonathan about building it but I've never managed to get the timber and parts back from him - now I can't get in touch with him at all which is getting to be rather frustrating to say the least.
However, come spring I'm sure I'll be cheerful regardless :D
-
Cool design! Will be pink too? :haha:
-
haha, yeah, just changed it. :D

Interesting, not sure how well it would work though, 8 string necks are pretty much like 6 string bass necks, dunno how well it would work on a dinky body, surely super neck heavy?
-
Haha, I thought it was Mr Lee for a sec then noticed the stripes and fretboard
Me too.
I have 584 customs on the way, but I'm not saying anything.
(or maybe its just one REALLY nice guitar)
-
Nothing as grand as a custom build, but I am putting together a parts Strat. Just trying to decide on a body at the moment.

I would go for a Strat body, personally.

i would widen the body a bit and maybe extend the upper horn. if I can get the strap button close to the 12th fret it will balance just fine... believe me - it does not have to be neck heavy
-
supposedly I'm having a custom Legra built...... 8)
-
Well, yes and no, here it is now:
mmmmm!! Purple heart and flamed maple,, yummy! whats the rest of the spec going to be
interesting bridge design that they have used on the purple one
-
That goes with the fanned frets to shorten the scale so nut = / bridge = \ (in context of angles).
S'a soft maple body with a birdseye stained top (yes, pink.) + bolt on neck unlike the one in the picture.
Satin chrome hardware, string thru bridge (same as the one shown) 4x4 machine heads layout obviously.
5 way pickup selector (2 humbuckers but think in context of coil taps...) and a 3 way to switch between magnetics/piezos/both + piezos have their own output jack because I've been told they sound 100 times better through a P.A.
To better explain the inlays, here's my paint masterpiece:
That's Aliminium inlays + gold mother of pearl at 12th fret which should = more like this:
(Just the part that I've drawn on though). Shall look pretty!
-
I always have a custom guitar in the works
In my MIND
Anyway, I got one of these. Well, not one of, cos there only is one. Thats the point. But you know what I mean.
Its now got a forarm contour, its trans black and it has a set of battlescarred painkillers and a schaller 456, rather than the 455. Apparently even when I get something made to my precise specs I still have to fuck with it *shrugs*

like philly q, i'm not really in the custom league, but i'm putting together a jazzmaster. also four months ago i left hard won parts for a certain guitar with a certain luthier which i'm hopeful will be in an instrument shaped form shortly :) :prod: :prod: :) couldn't be more excited about that one actually.
-

As usual - my bits of the job are done and I am awaiting my paint guys to return the body finished in the required colour
Paint finishers are an unusual breed I swear

(no criticism meant of course)
its a funny/tense experience though, like christmas is reschedualed to a random day, but theres no chocolate advent calender to count down the days. i suppose this is part of the whole custom thing :)
-

yeah, i'm on my second fanned fret build at the moment - i kept the first one for myself, i even purposely never finished it so i wouldnt sell it. I really like the tonal improvements and comfort that it can bring
-
I used a different bridge though, you can see a rough version in the photos i posted - its graphtech saddles attached to an ebony plate, wasnt my idea - completely lifted from the blackmachine multiscales
-
Haha well plagarism is the sincerest form of flattery (well, that's what I used to tell my tutors anyway...)
I've got a B7 (non fanned) on order from Doug. Hopefully finished by the end of the year....
-
I do like the look of that multiscale you've got there, Wez!!
Not so sure about the tele, though ;)
Heh
Roo
-
nice aint it.
If i borrow a good idea from somebody else i give full credit - like i did above. I think doug was the first person i saw do a bridge like this so i always refer to it as a blackmachine style bridge... I did use individual bridges on my first multiscale, they work fine but cost far too much for what they are.
Plagarism would be passing it off as my own idea, which i dont do! If you want to see plagarism then look at some of Perry Ormsby's guitars, he has been shafted so many times he copyrights almost every original idea.
check out his guitar:

To be fair, it's not like Ormsby didn't just build a ESP MII in Urban Camo with a handful of extra details.

true, i will post perry's take on that incident which i agree with
Personally, id like credit where credit is due, and it made quite clear it was not my work (and a link to my site, for people to see the original WOMD).
The guy originally asked me to quote on building him a guitar, of a different design (see the 'horrendous act' thread), and i pointed him to this guitar in my diary. Without asking, he has gone off an blatantly copied my design. If he had used it as inspiration, then thats fine, but he went as far as copying a bunch of things that i had never seen previously (bolted steel AND camo, warning stripes, clear covers). If he had left off even just the warning stripes, this thread would have never been started. If he had used a different camo pattern, we could assume it was just a co-incidence.
Is it as bad as forging a logo on a headstock? No
Is it worse than copying a body shape? For sure.
What happens if someone has been following my work, and then sees this guys guitar? Lets assume they didnt realise i didnt build it. Maybe they remember the guitar, but not my brand? I can assure you that happens. Lets assume a deal gets made to paint a guitar... the owner thinking he is contracting someone who's work he has seen around the place. Maybe they couldnt remember my name, but remembered the WOMD. Maybe they might contact this eric guy for a 'quote'. Maybe they might just be ripped off because this guy wants to paint guitars, and a bit of cash would be handy too while he 'learns'. Maybe he is an expert at painting. Maybe he isnt.

I'm planning building another mustang body, but using a simple tune-o-matic and a strat neck. Plan to trace and cut with a jigsaw, borrowing a router from a guy at work and using the schools drill presses for all the body holes. Two humbuckers for the win!
-
Both those look awesome as it is, look foward to seeing them painted up!
For what it's worth, that pink on mine = stain not paint :)
-
nothing wrong with pink stain, i did a cranberry bass a few years back

They are not exactly "in the works yet" so I don't know if I should post here, but I've taken the first baby steps towards a custom 7. Maybe a half-twin six aswell, we'll see. I've spoken to Doug at Soulmate guitars for a quote on my specs, and the guys at Graphtech for the best midi/piezo solution, and I've found dealers for all the hardware. Now I just need the bodies, which I may build myself but that does delay the process quite a bit. I'll keep you posted when it goes anywhere.
-
Doug at soulmate is a good guy - he did the current batch of logo's for me and can do fun stuff with mirrors!!!
-
Fun stuff with mirrors? What do you mean?
-
I got the wrong doug, i know the one from soulmate but i was thinking of the one from parable guitars - he has a laser cutter which he uses for inlay and full cracked mirror tops
-
Oh that Doug. :D
-
Doug at soulmate definately makes good necks and seems to be a good guy but i havnt dealt with him yet since i make my own but he seems decent when i have come across him on forums. Doug at parable has a nice big laser and does great inlay stuff and has a range of guitars out soon.. i dealt with him and he is a good guy - sent me a load of samples along with the inlays i ordered - i want to do a full fretboard inlay with him at some point. then obviously there is doug at blackmachine, who i apparently plagarised from
...
any wonder i get confused ;)
-
I've currently got a couple of bits in the works, an 8 string:
It has got the other half of the neck laminates i used for the fanned-fret 7, but this one isn't fanned this time :)
Got a 4 string neck-through bass that's coming along nicely- flame maple with walnut laminates, and a mahogany body with a paduk cap.
When funds permit, i'll build another fanned-fret, probably a 6 string (but with individual saddles this time), although i'd really like to build an extended range bass..... so many ideas, so little money!!!
Think i need to sell some gear off to fund all these projects! (anyone want a Jackson 7 string? :))
-
good to see more in the works oli, did we ever warn you this shite was addictive!!!. I like the singlecut shape you have gone for but no doubt someone will connect it with something that already exists and call you a plagurist ;) Whtas the bridge, is that a custom made hipshot?? - confused by the lightness of the baseplate. I like hipshot stuff a lot and am wondering if i could get them to do a satggerd 8 sring bridge almost like the split conklin bridge shown before
Oli - Try a 6 string FF when you get chance, its really worth it. I always worry that people see FF/MS as just for extended range guitars when really it makes so much sense for everything and is just as easy to play in standard tuning if the connecting scales are chosen well, it can make a standard tuned guitar with normal stringa sound and play better than its ever has before
I kept my first FF for a reason, mostly because it kicks ass but also because i can pass it to any guitarist that walks trough my door and they all say 'yeah, thats easier than i expected or 'that makes so much sense'. i adimt my first only has a slight fan.. but it still adds so much depth to the bass stings having that little extra string length... i am going to say the words HARP or PIANO and leave my FF/MS love where it stands

Haha yea, it is addictive! :)
The singlecut shape took me forever to get right, i just couldn't seem to get it how i'd like, but it's pretty good at the moment, so i'm happy. The bridge is just a regular Hipshot 8 string, the lighter bit in the middle is just a piece of paper that they put under the saddles to stop the baseplate from being scratched by the height adjustment screws.
I've just finished my written assignment for the 1st year of my degree, and I did it on the advantages of fanned-frets :) It's really got me in the mood, especially after i made some sound samples, and with both guitars (my fanned7, and the jackson 7) having a new set of strings, you can really hear the difference! I think something that would be quite cool, would be to build a 'traditional' looking guitar, but combine the classic Fender and Gibson scales- you could even do it in reverse, so you had fender length on the high strings, and Gibson on the bottom.... but obviously the fan would go the other way, but it'd be quite neat to try :)
I think i'm gonna make the fanned 6 with different woods to the idigbo/maple that i've done before, but i'm not sure exactly what yet.
-
My first FF was only a light fan from 25 on the treble to 26 on the bass. i wanted to see what the advantages to ff were for standard scale guitars. and even in standard tuning it makes sense and feels/sounds better. so clear an piano like you wouldnt believe - and if you are going low you want definition and screams. Thats why you all need to wait for the next one to be done so i can show you a down tuned baritone with good tension on each string that makes you Mofo's scream like you have never before.... even at really low tunings and all in between

Its a lap steel - a slide guitar
Think of blues, Ry Cooder, maybe a bit of Aerosmith and you'll get some of the picture
-
correction, its a damn cool lapsteel ;)

Got most of the neck carved today!

http://oli.doom-metal.com/8string/8string_neck_volute.jpg (http://oli.doom-metal.com/8string/8string_neck_volute.jpg) bonus pic of the volute too :) You can see (half way up the headstock) the join of the scarf joint- it's not the best, as it was my first, but it should clean up to look better.
-
whats the rest of it look like? I like the neck lams

Wow, i guess i have never really seen a lapsteel before. I know them by name very well, but it just looked so odd to me. It looked like i child's instrument, what with the color and odd (to my eyes) proportions. Interesting.
-
its a fun side project rather than a serious commission, but it is definately a serious instrument. i usually do them to use up spare parts but this one is ending up higher spec because its been spoken for. Lapsteels were popular in the art deco period so thats were i went with the shape. the colour might not match that theme but whatever

whats the rest of it look like? I like the neck lams
It's the neck for the 8string i posted on the previous page, so that singlecut idigbo body, and the fretboard is cocobolo- but you probably guessed that from the photo :) Out of the 3 fretboard woods that i've worked with (Ebony, Mac. Ebony and Cocobolo), i prefer working with cocobolo, so i think i'm gonna use it again, it looks really nice too :)

its a fun side project rather than a serious commission, but it is definately a serious instrument. i usually do them to use up spare parts but this one is ending up higher spec because its been spoken for. Lapsteels were popular in the art deco period so thats were i went with the shape. the colour might not match that theme but whatever
a bit of this:

lol, i guess that makes sense. The proportions seem a little more normal on the JPG you just offered up, but i suppose that is only because the neck looks so ridiculously wide - with the fretboard being particularly thin - on the one you are making. Whereas with the one in the JPG the fretboard extends to the edge of the neck like a regular guitar.

Wow, that looks awesome! Can't wait to see the finished product/it's progress :)

some follow the fretboard, others dont - it doesnt really alter how they play as you dont ever hold it by the neck... i reckon my shape is very empire states building

Cheers :) I look forward to seeing the progress on your conklin too! Mine will be tuned to F#, but hopefully at some point I can have a play with a high-A guitar (or maybe string it up that way, with a octave4plus string for the high A). It's certainly exciting to be heading down the extended range :)
Viva la 8 string!

Yeah man! Thanks :) What's an octave4plus string though? + what length is your scale? I guess the octave4plus has something to do with this but if that's much over a standard 24.75 I don't think you'll get a high A going without it snapping very quickly.
