Title: Yet another 7 strings...

This weekend I'm probably going to pick up a new custom 7 string, which is basicly a gibson-V, all-mahagony, made by a luthier here . Has a short 24.5 scale. The headstock got broken, so it's dirt cheap.

I'm probably going to route her for a Floyd Rose, but we'll see that later.

I only need one (bridge) pickup.

I already have a C-Warpig in a Jackson Dinky and in a custom 7 V (maple neck thu, mahagony wings)

I mostly play progressive/extreme metal, you know the deal; Lots of fast notes, I need to have quite heavy low-mids, a dark-ish sound, a very tight (definition) and crushing tone. (On my JSX and ENGL I never put the treble above halfway, yet I don't scoop the mids to 6 feet-under!)

Any other thoughts beside the classic C-Warpig? Wouldn't the Painkilla be too bright for this one?

MDV will pipe up any second, too, and I'm pretty sure he'll say Painkiller. Actually, he might say PPAAAAIIINNNKEEEEELLLLAAARRRRRR!!!! or similar :)

Its got plenty of mahogany in it and the swamp ash is pretty dense for more lows. Its got more highs and is tighter than an all-mahogany guitar, but its in the right ball-park.

The PK is question is double screw pole, too, which adds low end, so I dont think you have anything to worry about with a standard one in mahogany at all. (I believe the first painkillers ever made by Tim are in one of his les pauls, actually).

I really dig the painkilla I have on my neck of my (main) custom V-7 tho, I was just afraid that it could be too trebly.

The tone I'm aiming for, would be Iced Earth's Horror Show, but more gain/rawer a lil. Or Demons&Wizard's self titled album (on heaven's denied, the verses sounds sooo killer)

The guy uses gibby,s LP with Larry DINO amps (custom amps from Germany , which are 5000 euros) Tim knows probably better than me how these babies sounds !!!!! There's something happening in the low-mids, I don't know. They're based on a " marshall" frame, but boosted on steroids.

Yes, I do know there's some studio tricks, but one can hope to get close!

Post by: Fikealox on September 14, 2008, 03:30:57 PM: I don't think a Painkiller'll be too trebly in an all mahogany 24.75" guitar. Mine was uber-bright in my alder/maple strat, but in my M2 (which is alder/maple too, but the alder is noticeably less dense) it's a lot more manageable.

I think you'll like a miracle man in mahogany
it crunches the lower mids better than the painkiller, imo
the painkiller is a bit dryer/leaner

I e-mailed Larry on the last week asking for some mod tips for my Framus Cobra, but he didn't answer :(
I'm modding it for a less modern/more crunchy tone
I'll replace the Soldano gain stages (the Cobra preamp is almost a SLO clone) by Bogner Ecstasy/Fish style gain stages (very close to old Marshalls) and try some FRED rectifier diodes on the power amp
maybe a push pull or trimpot for the negative feedback to control the power amp distortion and tightness
I found a lot of information posted by Larry on metroamp forum

btw, according to Larry, Demons & Wizards album was recorded with Gibson Gothic Explorer with EMG's

but Schaffer's been using his signature WCR Icebucker (alnico 5, around 9k, I think), BK Black Dog, BK Riff Raff and he has a purple zebra pup set in his transblack Les Paul, so I believe it's a Rebel Yell set

his live tone is unbelievable
he doesn't use a lot of gain neither high output pickups, but he sounds crushing tight and extremely clear

I don't know what pickups he used in those days, but I think youll get it best with a Painkiller or Cold Sweat. For his cuttent sound in an all-mahogany 7 string, I'd be tempted to suggest Mules.

i'm not quite sure if the pup is a duncan or dimazio (didn't care, it sounds alright)

BTW the guitar is sooo 80's that i was thinking about some holy diver or something instead
