Title: I just bought this...
Post by: Jamie on September 14, 2008, 12:20:24 AM

The only problem is i dont know much about the guitar company or this guitar, i just thought that it looked cool and it might make a good project, besides it is a bit of a novelty having a guitar thats older than you.

I had a look on harmony central for this model and i could not find this particular one, i found some similar and some people had paid $2500 and $1600 for them but other people had paid £300 for one.

I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about this particular model.

Almost bought one of these back in the day of a mate....very hair metal...and played far better than quite a few jacksons I tried

Aria's a good brand, when I was a kid in the early 80s they were just as well regarded as other Japanese brands like Ibanez and Washburn.  Of course Ibanez then came up with the Jem/RG and went stratospheric, Washburn kept totally changing their line but stayed reasonably well known... but Aria stayed fairly obscure.  I suppose they've never really had big name endorsers (I can only think of Gerry Cott from the Boomtown Rats!).

Like those other brands, Aria have instuments build in different locations covering a huge price range, and I don't know where the Excel series fitted in.  But it must be a good deal at that price.  :)

My friend's friend's Dad has a Semi-Hollow Aria which is godly. I'd forgotten about it actually until now.
Hope you like you're new guitar

That one would be a late 80s- early 90s example and the quality was still pretty good.
it will serve you well as a project
If it doesn't play as well as you hoped - have it setup and it will pay dividends
The weak point may be the tremolo as many licensed ones aren't a patch on the originals

Good fun guitar!

I finally received my Aria guitar. There is a lot of work to be done. It needs Re-fretting, new machine heads, and possibly a new floyd rose.

It has the thickest neck i have ever seen and the guitar weighs a ton! Pickups sound very nice but i think i am going to change them anyway.

Which licensed ones are close to the originals?

Gotoh are best of that bunch
Ibanez Edge and Lo Pro Edge are good
Tacuechi are ok-ish

Best to save the extra money and get the real deal

on my self build i used a Gotoh.  I feel stupid now.  Would the dimensions be identical?  Because if they are then i could easily switch the Gotoh out.  I really want my guitar to be the best it can be, relatively speaking of course.

Schallers are also very good. As good as the originals I hear.

At least you got the guitar at a good price to start with.  Once you finish the project I bet you will have a great axe. It looks cool :D

Yeah i suppose but at the min its a it of a struggle to play it. You really have to work it. Im not going to start work on it for a while yet. Im going to concentrate on doing up my KB Jackson first.
