Title: New Lion Day - EMERALD!
Post by: FELINEGUITARS on September 17, 2008, 05:39:24 PM
Ok - been thinking about doing this one for a while
I wanted to make a guitar like an LP Custom that could take a pair of BKP Emerald pickups ( as they were based on the pickups in a 70s LP Custom (Think Brian Robertson/ Thin Lizzy and hence the track : Emerald)

It is slightly thinner than a full bodied Lion so the weight is more manageable.
We used a maple top that had some birdseyes on it - understated but pretty
It has our all access neck of course.
Hardware is our current fave mix of Sperzel tuners, Earvana nut, TonePros bridge and locking tailpiece studs and an aluminium tailpiece.
I wanted to make it an Emerald Green of course and the block inlays feature a nice stripe of abalone that has a lot of green shades in it . Even the knobs are green tinted abalone on top

Here she is :

I'm not normally an LP kind of guy, but that is one fine, fine, FINE looking guitar!

Not sure I could carry off the Green-ness, though!

That's a really nice looking guitar Jon.  I'm sure it plays great, but what's the sound like?  Does it get the Brian Robertson sound?

Mmmmm, i really like it, the inlays and the control knobs are really great, as is the birdseye. I'm not such a fan of it normally, but here it's quite understated and not too in-your-face :)

Jon, I have to say that is the tastiest LP shape guitar I have ever seen, well done that man, truly a piece of art!

I wanted to build a guitar with a nice looking top and have trans green for ages but afraid of messing it up, but this has just inspired me to just do it after I have built my first axe (very soon hopefully!)

Just beautiful and very inspiring, thanks for sharing! :D

Somebody said it couldn't look any more Irish if it tried (a reference to the colour)
Funnily enough because the back is black and the binding is white/off white from the side it looks like a pint of guiness

Price wise I will sell it for £2000 ono

I am intending to get a customer of mine (Greg Hart) who was until recently in Limehouse Lizzy to record some Lizzy tunes with it - recording with his current band Hartless and post them in the players section and on my website

Here she is again with my Amber Lion lurking behind

Thanks guys - always nice to get some feedback.
Was playing the new beast earlier and it does that John Sykes thing with all the harmonic squealing too
Great fun!

Yes the top is birdseye maple - or rather it is plain Canadian rock maple that happened to have some birdseyes in it by accident.  It was going to be a solid colour guitar (metallic green flake) but I decided that the wood would look interesting enough with a translucent green.
Here she is without paint:

The next Lions that will be coming back from the paintshop will be Johnny Mac's and Catalyst77's
Johnny's will be a honey-burst over that wicked flametop and Catalyst (Ben Martin) will have a silverburst like a late 70s Gibbo

Jonathon, did you get those inlays from here: http://www.tonetechluthiersupplies.co.uk/Inlay-Materials/Inlays/133-MOP-with-Diagonal-Abalone-Inlay-Set/Detailed-product-flyer.html

I saw these a while ago and really liked them, if you got it from the site is it someone you regularly deal with and are they any good? They seem like they have some good products available.

I wasn't expecting to post in this thread, but I saw it in the flesh today - the pics don't do it complete justice, it is very gorgeous. I wasn't sure about the birdseye in the pics, I'm not too fond of them in general, but in real life on this one they're "right".

When I first saw the thread it kinda passed me by, "oh a green one..." (!) So much so that when Jonathan handed it to me (to see if I liked the feel of the fretwire while establishing my preferences for a refret) I didn't make the connection at first

I was determined not to get too interested, and to keep to the job in hand, and it's possibly a bit light for me anyway, so my wallet was safe  But now I've handled a Feline, and the experience has sunk in, I can really see what the fuss is about. And that all access neck joint is really comfortable folks. I don't usually play up there, but it is so comfy that I can imagine my left hand resting around the joint while I'm not playing, just because it feels so good.

"Trying some frets" might have sown a few seeds...

Anyway Philly, seeing the tone of your your posts earlier in this thread, if you're seriously looking at "gas-reduction"... DO NOT GO TO CROYDON AT THE MOMENT!!

I've been to Jonathan's place a couple of times Andy, so I know what you're talking about!  :D

These threads always give me Feline GAS, but it would be very hard for me to decide on a custom guitar because I'm always changing my mind about specs and going through phases of being into Vs, or Juniors, or Teles, or Strats....

And although I couldn't build a guitar from scratch, I do love customising - rewiring, changing parts, little bits of refinishing and general tweaking.  So if I got something that already had the exact specs I wanted I'd feel I'd missed out on the fun in a way.

Yeah - Tim hadn't decided at the time of the build and obviously had access to the pickups so we did it without - think we used a pair to test her out with but took them out

We have had customers supply bits that they want on their custom builds if they are unusual bits, so it's pretty flexible.

JT originally specced to have Cold Sweats in his Preacher but after playing for a while swapped them for mules.

I think a few customers have found the guitars more responsive than off the shelf ones and ended up going for a more vintage pickup because the guitar delivers the tone they need without a hot pickup - in fact one player in a bad called Dirty Deeds found the hot pickups too responsive using big monitors onstage (they were supporting Iron Maiden and Maiden have big sidefill monitors) and changed from Duncan Distortions to Duncan Customs (this was pre-BKP) which worked out perfectly.

I like the maple top, it's away from the whole "Wow, look at the waviness of that top, it's like it sticks out from the guitar!" and the "Oh, it's green" sort of comments. It makes the person think "Wow! What top is that!" which is what I like.

Good job.

OK, having been down to Feline yesterday & played this guitar, I just have to revive this thread.

When the marine-blue korina lion was sold, I breathed a HUGE sigh of relief  but now I'm back to square one

If you think the Emerald Lion looks good on the pictures, wait until you see it in person & more importantly, play it.  It is an eye-poppingly gorgeous guitar - a really intelligent, well thought-out upgrade of the classic Gibson design.  In playability terms it's light years ahead.  A beautiful, beautiful guitar.  Someone needs to get down there & buy it (someone not called Antag, that is ;))

Actually, people need to get down there & buy several of Jonathan's guitars.  Whoever snaps up that black explorer is going to get a bargain & the white superstrat with the Petrucci switching has one of the nicest necks I've ever played on.

(Disclaimer: Just in case anyone is wondering, I have no connection to Feline guitars aside from being a regular repair customer & Jonathan did not ask/pay/bribe or otherwise coerce me into making this post...) :)

I'm with Antag all the way on the looks of this one - the pics look good but, for me, they don't go near what it actually looks like.

I tend not to go for fancy wood grains, "interesting" colours, and so on, on my guitars. I think guitars like that are very pretty, and I love looking at them, but the more "beautiful" they are, the less "mojo" they seem to have for me.

But this one (and the pics on here did get dismissed by me as "pretty guitar"), when you see it close up, is something else. It's got the pretty bits, but none of them shout "hey I'm a pretty bit" at you, the whole guitar is in harmony. I didn't even realise what I was picking up - it was just one of those guitars that you accept without even thinking (admittedly I was only trying the frets to see if I liked the fretwire!). I only played it for a few minutes, not even plugged in, but I've found myself thinking about it on and off ever since.

The missus hasn't helped - I rely on her for that disinterested "oh yeah, its a guitar" to calm the GAS. But then every now and again I get a "hey that's nice..." - I own several guitars because of this! She saw the pics here and, unfortunately, she was not disinterested!!

I'm still not convinced I ever want to spend that much on a single guitar, and it was lighter than I was expecting... but I am wavering

SO, please, SOMEONE go and buy it before my tele's ready for picking up!!!

I am thinking of using that particular neck as a template for a series of 24 fret neck superstrats I am planning for next year.
It's a nice profile as you mentioned Antag- kind of like a cross between a good 80s USA Jackson and a nice '62 strat
Not superslim like some Ibanez but not chunky either - just right!

Actually the customer who is buying that guitar has asked if i will make him a different neck for it
He loves the feel of the neck, but wants one with different inlays :o
It does mean that that particular neck could be available for the Antag custom project

Nooo bloke, I was asking about your tele... the baja or the squier in the attic :P

Ah I see...

It's Alice the Baja in for a refret at the moment - really looking forward to getting her back. There were one or two fret-dress issues on her - possibly not as bad as I thought - but I've been wearing into the stock frets anyway... so I decided to replace them all. Tele purists might think I'm mad, but I've gone for the huge frets that are on the Emerald Lion. If works out really well for me, I might end up doing the same to Edith the Strat when she needs a fret-dress (if it worked for SRV, Rory, Albert Collins, etc, it's good enough for me :D).

The "squier in the attic" is still there - might do something to her soon. Problem is, she'll be another maple-board blackguard-type tele, what I want is a rosewood-board 62-type tele in white.

Too much exposure to sexy looking Feline Lions could cause unfortunate distractions though

But whatever happens, "strat selling" is not part of any plan of mine
