Title: I need help with strat wiring!
Post by: Erlend_G on September 22, 2005, 03:36:57 AM
Well, i'm modifying my old beater strat with a new pickguard and a humbucker in the brigde position (S-S-H config), and also new wiring.

I want a single volume control, and a three-way Les paul type switch;
with the 3-way selecting these P.U combinations:

1. Neck single coil only
2. Neck and Middle single coil in Parallel
3. Brigde humbucker only.

Could this be done, considering the physics of the switch, and how?

Thanks alot,
-Erlend

Off the top of my head I can't think of a way of doing that with a three way toggle..............there is the LP Custom 3 way though, that may do it(the 3 pickup Custom).

there is a 3 way switch available that ibanez use, from the outside of the guitar it looks standard, but the actual switch has 12 contacts, allowing you to coil tap etc, this would be what i reccomend, they are available from allparts uk, part no:EP4362-000.

Good Luck

That's a Superswitch which is a blade style, I think Erlend is after a toggle style.

Hi Erland, the gibson LP custom switch could do this.  It is Stewart MacDonalds part 1228

It has 2 regular 3 way switches in it, and the center position gives you one pickup with either of the other 2 (Gibson use bridge and middle).  I gave the wiring for the LP in this link:

http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=488

StewMac give you the wiring instructions for a LP/SG here:

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics,_pickups/Components:_Switches_and_knobs/3/3-way_Pickup_Switches/Instructions/I-1228.html#details

To get what you want though, you would use this:

Lug 1: Hot from bridge pickup volume pot
Lug 2: Hot to output jack, switched output
Lug 3: Hot from neck pickup volume pot
Lug 4: Solder a jumper wire to lug 3
Lug 5: Hot from middle pickup
Lug 6: Not used

nice combo, i think it would work well with a mother's milk in the neck, apache in the middle and Mule in the bridge

Ok
this can be done with a stock USA 3 way switch as found in a tele or old strat
The output tag is the one that is LONG and always in contact with the "switch wiper
See how you get on with this

Ok - you are right Phil
Was late at night and I got focussed on how to do it with a tele switch

Didn't realise till this morning that it was an LP switch

That's OK Jonathan, I started to write up the 3-way slider too at first, because that's what I use on most of my guitars.
