Title: Celestion Century Neo speaker?
Post by: gwEm on September 25, 2008, 01:07:10 PM
Has anyone tried one of these?

The lightweight and 102db are quite interesting I must say, but do they sound any good? Does anyone have a comparision with a more well known model?

Cheers!

would actually quite like an answer to this, so i'll give it one bump, and then let it die.

last time I was down at Matamp (a good year+) I asked Jeff and Dave about those speakers - both said they were shitee.  actually, Dave has been gone for a good 6 months now (maybe longer), so that'll tell you how long ago it was.

I have the 60w vintage model (based on the vintage 30) in a 1x12 cab
I think they are the most underrated Celestion model

it sounds a bit too bright before you break it in (like most speakers), but then it BEATS THE shiteeeeee out of the regular ceramic vintage 30
you need the CRANK your amps through it a few times to smooth this speaker
it won't be broke in 2 o 3 months of bedroom use
I though mine was already broken in, but when I almost blew it with my Framus, I noticed that it got even better after that day
it has a similar voicing to the v30, but with a bit less mids (but not scooped like a classic lead or t75!)
the highs are a bit more twangy with a faster and cleaner response (might get spikey on clean if you pick too hard), the bass is deeper and the midrange is totally clear, unlike the v30 (I hate how the v30 gets muddy in a room)

it doesn't work so well with my Framus Cobra (cause the Cobra is extremely picky about speakers... it only likes the greenbacks), but my Peavey Rockmaster and the SLO preamp clone I had  work better with it than with my greenback loaded 4x12 (actually I think it has more to do with the power amp I used than with the preamps)
that speaker has a very deep sound
not hollow at all
it's just... unforgivin
that magnet makes your picking and mistakes jump on your face (like the Cobra itself), and that might be annoying sometimes
I usually prefer the greenback smoothness

but I can't talk about the 80w version (which is based on the classic lead and has a completely different voicing)

I hope they launch a century greenback one day :D
