Hello all, two things!
I am looking at getting a fuzz pedal and am interested in the BYOC range (I want to get into DIY stuff!). Do any of my fellow forum members have any experience of the BYOC fuzz pedals? They seem to have a few and I would appreciate some thoughts! Hendrix fuzz is the sort of sound I am aiming for so the Octave Fuzz looks like the favourite so far.
I'm also interested in learning more about amps and how they work - I know there are kits for building a small amp (everyone's got to start somewhere!) but can't seem to find any on the interweb. Any thoughts?
Cheers all!

i have had a go at some byoc.. nothing succesfull.. but i know why, my soldering technique was very bad... i had some lessons from the GF's dad who does it for his job... i think thats the main thing in BYOC... make sure you know what you are doing with a soldering iron.. keep the tip clean, tinned and dont leave it too long on as it will ruin the end.
-
Not built there fuzz have the done the mighty mouse and is fiddly but do able....
Built one of these amps as well is far easier than the pedal http://www.astonelectronics.co.uk/valveampkits.html/ (http://www.astonelectronics.co.uk/valveampkits.html/) I did the vk5 Mvolume.....but had a 6v6 rather than the el84(kit is adjusted slightly to accomadate)

These seem to be a popular starting point

The BYOCs are excellant
Made the wah kit last night and have the tubescreamer as well ready to build
Good soldering is needed
There is a BYOC forum with some great tips and stuff
-
The byoc stuff is fun, pretty easy if you can solder and are methodical. My next build will be from scratch, gonna pick up some perf board and stripboard and get some cool layouts. I'll let people know how i gets on when i start, next week i hopes!
-
i've ordered a kit from General Guitar Gadgets, a Marshall Guv'Nor clone. i convinced myself it wasn't that hard, i could do it ok, but as the time grows near i think a brown stain is beginning to form in my underwear!!
i've soldered the innards of guitars before, and while my first attempts were pretty messy i think i got better at it. hopefully i'll get through it ok. i'm determined to make a go of it at least!
-
I'm thinking along silmilar lines - I fancy building a tubescreamer type clone and either modding one of the cheap 5 watters or building something like the Aston kit...think it might be a time of life thing?! :?
-
There's a DIY Build A Fuzz article in this month's Guitar Buyer (or is it Guitar And Bass?) magazine. It's a circuit from their pedal expert, Dan something. I can't remember much this morning can I?
I'm tempted to have a go at that.......
-
I have now purchased and built the Tubescreamer clone, took about 4-5 hours all told but I was being methodical. (I did burn out the led which is annoying!)
Have to say I'm very impressed - built it to TS808 spec, has that tight solid state 'chunk' and seems to sit well with the JCM800. I want to play around with the clipping mods next see what variations can be gotten from it...

Rocky road from here will be modding anything..... even your grans stairlift *L*.....but is fun

Not so sure about the stairlift...has to be musical in some sense :) If and when I do another pedal it will either be a compressor or the lazy sprocket thingy cos that sounds fun! Most likely next project will be a valve junior - I want a low wattage power amp and one of those may well fit the bill.

That's good to hear, as I've got one on order for use with my 800 clone. I chickened out on the making it myself though, I've ordered it already built from "Axe and you shall receive", which is linked to on the BYOC site. it'll come with lots of socketed sites on the board, so it'll be easy to play around with all the alternate components that come with it.
I'm fairly confident noodling around inside a nice big hand-wired amp, but don't trust my soldering skills with small PCB's yet.
-
The BYOC kits are are comprehensive and easy to build. However, I would suggest that anyone getting into DIY pedal building, first buys themselves a decent soldering Iron. (Weller is the industry standard.) Another choice tool would be a multimeter.
I have succesfully built the BYOC's:
Phase 90
Ross Compressor
Tube Screamer
Analogue Chorus
There is also a forum for assistance including how to mod your pedals should you wish.
Another good site for building clones is Tonepads.
They supply the circuit board and instruction but you have to source the components
http://www.tonepad.com/
Again I have succesfully built the:
Boss CE2 chorus
MX Microamp
Tremulus Lune
Rebote Delay 2.5
Tube Screamer
Small Clone Chorus
Ross Compressor
Cheers

DIY pedal is something I might fancy having a go at. Managed to fit all my pickups no prob.
Considered building a valve amp from scratch at one time, then chickened due to time involved, expense, me
being clueless.

Hence the user ID? :) they are a little fiddly, but believe me I'm no great shakes at fiddly stuff and it went ok, so I am sure you would be fine. I tested the different capacitor (.047uf film cap) last night which is the one bit I socketed - going to .22uf was way too bass heavy even on single coil for me, but the .1uf was good so I am going to have to put a switch in for that. I did put in higher max and min distortion resistors as I thought that would be fine without testing and it does have a good range on offer (but does get noisy once you get about 3/4s of max).

Definately !!

I built a BYOC DOD250 clone, which was a doddle.
The other day I tried an OLCircuit Orange Peel, and completely stuffed it up...
Gutted.
-
I'm halfway through the tubescreamer pedal
I've built it so I can swap out the different options till I find what i like
Want to put different kinds of clipping on a switch
Look at the BYOC forums - has some good tips and stuff
-
The OLC stuff is really hard i think. The board is pretty tight and the layout doesn't always line up. I had to use the schematic to work out what came next. Tried a slow century twice and still doesn't work. Gonna build a fuzz from scratch tomorrow using strip board, let you know how it goes!

Yeah. I think that I screwed the power bit up on mine. Nothing at all.

Theres a video of it in action here http://www.thegigrig.com/ (http://www.thegigrig.com/) personally though I'm more interested in the Amp Shootout which he is also running (as Dave Gregory is involved init)

Sorry to revise an old thread but does anybody have a copy of that buld your own fuzz article? then can put into electronic format? also if anyone has and has tried it:
how does it compare to the BYOC Fuzz if possible to compare?
is there info on where to get materials etc?
cheers
-
I'll scan the layout tomorrow if you want, and the components are from Maplins of order from www.Banzaieffects.com.
Looks super easy, might do one myself if i have time.

Thanks very much mate, that would be great if you could. 8)

I've done the BYOC Tonebender ESV. It was great fun to build, design the enclosure, paint etc. Just a shame that sound-wise it was a bit disappointing:(
-
Hummm anybody knows one that sells it for SIMPLE booster? Like 1 knob??
Searched these GGG and BOYC and they have "treble booster" alike Brian May or "tribooster" but not the simple one...
-
the tri booster is really only a one knob booster... the other knob and switch just select flavours (actually 5 different boosts). i like mine a lot!!
lost of schematics on line for simpler boosters!

Oh, thanks Wez, Ireally know nothing about booster... th BBE treble boster says it fattens up and drive the tone, so the treble booster isn't a booster for high frequencies? (http://216.211.140.132/Smileys/Lots_O_Smileys/icon_scratch.gif)
-
I've actually just purchased the tri-booster to give this whole BYOC a try. Really looking forward to it, if it goes wrong it goes wrong & if I can do it...then let the fun begin!

I built a phaser from BYOC over xmas, and it's pretty neat. Didn't take too long and was fun to do.
Fernando i have a few stripboard layouts for simple boosters (the zvex hard on and EH LPB-1) if you can work stripboard or vero board they are pretty simple, i done one myself recently as well.

those old germanium treble boosters (I guess thats what the bbe is based one) do exactly what they say, they boost the signal and in particular the treble frequencies but they also add a lot of there own tone. Doesnt always suit newer amps but the BYOC has an extra switch to change it to a mid or full boost that can work better with newer amps... still with that vintage germaniumy flavour
So you have 3 types of germanium booster and a silicon booster (more modern) and a Mosfet Booster (cleaner with more sparkle)
-
makes me want to make one now..will have to try someones first
-
just you wait boy!

Thanks Wez, looks like this one is the way to go!
EDIT: IF they sold outside US or had a dealer in South America :?
-
i can get one from the Uk dealer and send it on to you if you want... thats two lots of postage + Uk prices to pay though so i am not sure if there is a better option

For what I've look on the website of the UK dealer, it's a good option, the Canadian dealer (the one BYOC told me I should buy) ask US$135 for the triboost, in the UK is £55, about US$85 if I'm right... I've send a email to them asking if they can sell me it, if they say no, probably I'll ask this favor to you
Thanks very much Wez! :D
-
Personally, i've been thinking of getting a madamp A15Mk1 DIY kit : http://www.madamp.biz/
Now that will be an interesting project :P
-
they look interesting
-
that G2 looks like a good way into it, even if they dont compete with amazing valave amps... they really dont have to at that price
-
That was exactly what i thought, they might not be the greatest amps ever, but at that price, it's a nice learning experience, and with some different tubes and a good cab, they can be really nice.
-
Looks like the UK dealer of BYOC send it abroad! Thanks for the help Wez! :D
-
Can anybody post an electronic copy of this build your own fuzz article?
cheers
-
BYOC are great kits - If you follow the instructions carefully and take your time soldering, you'll have it working. I was amazed when my Armstrong Twin worked first time!
I have now sold most of my other pedals and am going to start customising my BYOCs with different components.
I am hooked.

I just ordered 5min ago the Triboost :D

Cool. Good luck with it Fernando !!
I'm amazed at the low noise floor of my BYOC tubescreamer - a sign a top quality components and circuit layout.
-
The Triboost is great for driving the input of a cooking valve amp - and you can set it up for all sorts of boosts!!
