Title: Single coil advice
Post by: Ben_W on October 02, 2008, 04:45:02 PM
Hi guys, i'm getting an Ibanez RG1570 soon, and plan on getting a Warpig and a Nailbomb for it (not sure which I will have in neck/bridge yet), but have no idea which single coil to have in the middle (it is HSH).

It's a basswood guitar, and for the humbuckers I will be playing a lot of modern metal, think Redemption by Shadows Fall, The end of heartache by Killswitch Engage, and have heard a lot of people saying good things of Nailbombs in Basswood. Will Nailbombs be able to do the modern metal chugging type sounds? Or would a Warpig be more suited to that? I don't particularly want a MM, as I think they will be a bit too compressed for me. So perhaps a Warpig in the bridge for the heavier side of things, and a Nailbomb in the neck?

Now, to the main bit. I don't have much knowledge of single coils (always use humbuckers usually), so I am looking for a rock/metal style single coil, if possible, nothing particularly heavy, but don't really want that classic strat tone. I'm thinking a Trilogy perhaps, or Irish Tour?

A nice-ish clean would be good, although not vital. I probably won't be using the single coil hugely, but I would rather pay that extra £60 or whatever, and have a more versatile guitar, and not be thinking "I wander what that would sound like on a single coil" or whatever.

So basically, just a single coil that will match/go well with a nailbomb and a warpig, but not such a high output pickup.

Thanks, and sorry to post another pickup help post, but I have only got a pair of Riff Raffs and a Cold Sweat, and never really use single coils, so thought I would rather play it safe and ask you guys!

Ben.

id say something low output so u have something for decent cleans and classic rock, maybe irish tour or something, if you want something hotter maybe a (single) trilogy, or for something to match the output then the sinner

I would get an Irish Tour - I have it in my Ibanez with a Nailbomb/Cold Sweat set up and it sounds great.  I've also heard it with a Warpig combo and it worked well there.  You can get all the classic single coil sounds from it, and still use it to flavour the HB sounds.

ok thanks! Do you think Warpig Bridge and Nailbomb neck would be better than vice versa?
